Agreed. And what a great addition to Visconti's "Death in Venice" the final sentence is! It's difficult to commiserate with a man who wrote everything he wanted to , won the Nobel Prize, and fathered 6 children, two of whom--the two elder girls (one gay, one straight) were happy---but I manage it anyway.

If you read German, don't settle for Heilbut. get Thomas Mann: Notitzbuecher 1-7 (amazon.de). You'll...probably be sorry you did.
