Neil Bush has developed close connections to the Maktoum family of Dubai, the same family that has interests in the state-owned firm, Dubai Ports World, that is poised to take over the operations of six U.S. ports...

Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, the Finance Minister of Dubai and someone who certainly had his pulse on the millions of dollars sent through the emirate to the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and Pakistani madrassas and assorted Islamic "charities."

UAE banking insiders have revealed that accounts used to fund the Taliban and Al Qaeda involved members of the Dubai royal family.

Banking insiders in Dubai report that in March 2002, U.S. Secretary of Treasury Paul O’Neill visited Dubai and asked for documents on a $109,500 money transfer from Dubai to a joint account held by hijackers Mohammed Atta and Marwan al Shehhi at Sun Trust Bank in Florida.

O’Neill also asked UAE authorities to close down accounts used by Al Qaeda and affiliated partners like Victor Bout.

The UAE complained about O’Neill’s demands to the Bush administration.

O’Neill’s pressure on the UAE and Saudis contributed to Bush firing him as Treasury Secretary in December 2002...

CIA allegedly dressed up as pirates and attacked ships.

Wayne Madsen has made reference to allegations about the CIA dressing up as pirates and attacking ships. Reportedly the CIA were trying to prevent nuclear proliferation. Allegedly the outing of Valerie Plame compromised the pirate operations.

Libby about classified CIA counter-proliferation operations, including the exposure of Valerie Plame Wilson and her Brewster Jennings & Associates clandestine work, eventually resulted in the compromise of the CIA's most sensitive nuclear components interdiction program...

The CIA's maritime interdiction program was designed to stop suspect cargo vessels on the high seas, mostly in the Straits of Malacca and the South China Sea, and search them for nuclear material and missiles and their respective components...

Special armed CIA units, masquerading as pirates themselves, accompanied the actual pirates on their fast boats when they attacked merchant vessels identified by other intelligence as likely trafficking in nuclear and missile cargo.

The CIA teams, wearing personal dosometers and using Geiger counters and other radiation detection equipment, would inspect cargo holds and containers as the "official pirates" off-loaded commercial cargo such as electronic equipment, small vehicles, and other merchandise.

The quid pro quo was that the CIA would not interfere with the pirates' looting of commercial cargo and the pirates would give the CIA teams first access to the cargo holds and containers.

The two teams also provided each other mutual security.

In most cases, the CIA had arranged to pay off local police, maritime police, and coast guards not to interfere with the joint CIA-pirate gang operations.

The U.S. Navy was also instructed not to interfere in the pre-arranged piracy actions...

After the exposure of the CIA's other counter-proliferation activities, it was not long before Asian and other international criminal gangs and syndicates, particularly those involving Russian-Israeli gangsters and smugglers tied to Cheney, Libby, and convicted GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and police and military forces in the region realized that a cooperative arrangement existed between certain pirate groups and U.S. intelligence.

The joint CIA-pirate gang interdictions affected a very small percentage of the tens of thousands of vessels that annually transited the Straits of Malacca.

The joint operations were launched from numerous small islets, coves, sheltered rivers, and lagoons that predominate the Malay peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and other islands in the South China Sea and Straits of Malacca.

Aceh-based pirates in northern Sumatra and Philippines-based pirates reportedly proved to be the most reliable for the CIA...

Manchester United and the plot that never was.

OLD TRAFFORD

In April 2004, the British people were alerted to an amazing coup.

They learned how the police had seized a terrorist gang just as it prepared to launch an audacious bomb attack on Old Trafford stadium on match day, an attack which could have killed thousands of people.

It was a national sensation.

And yet there was not a shred of truth in the story.

The police and, to an extent the media, are responsible for the invention.

On the morning of Monday 19 April 2004, more than 400 officers from four police forces, many of them armed, raided half a dozen houses, flats and businesses in and around Manchester.

They arrested eight men, one woman and a 16-year-old boy.

They were held for several days and intensively interrogated. In due course the suspects were released.

No charges were ever laid.

The newspapers, by contrast, had no doubt about what the story was.

The front page of The Sun proclaimed: "MAN U SUICIDE BOMB PLOT".

On pages four and five the paper claimed: "EXCLUSIVE: MAN UTD SUICIDE BLASTS FOILED".

Once the story had started to run, it was further fuelled by the Manchester police. Rather than issue a cool denial, they played it up by holding a press conference. The accompanying press release read: "We are confident that the steps that we have taken to date have significantly reduced any potential threat in the Greater Manchester area."

With the weekend fixtures looming, it went on: "Greater Manchester Police and Manchester United Football Club have put in place extra security measures to reassure the public about the safety of both matches."

One of the suspects, a Kurd, suffered so badly from having his name linked to a terrorist plot that he wants to remain anonymous.

He told me how Old Trafford had cropped up in his interrogation: "I was in the police station and the interview stopped, like a rest, and somebody, they bring in the coffee and they ask me what you like? I say I like the football. Oh, who do you support? They ask me just like a friendly, who do you support? I say Manchester United. Oh, how long you support Manchester United? I said a long time I support Manchester United, when I was tiny, I was small, you know and all my family supported Manchester United ... they asked me, have you been football ground? I said, of course I've been to the football ground. Two years ago, long time ago, I can't remember."

These questions were surely prompted by the discovery, at the anonymous suspect's flat, of Manchester United paraphernalia: a poster of Old Trafford, and ticket stubs the suspect had kept as souvenirs of his only visit to the ground, when he had gone with a friend to watch United play Arsenal the year before.

The two friends had bought their tickets from touts, which meant that they sat at different parts of the ground.

The Sun reported that the bombers planned to sit at different parts of the ground, in order to cause maximum damage with their bombs. This claim can only have been based on the fact that the old ticket stubs found by the police were for seats in different parts of the stadium. This information had not been made public, so The Sun could only have obtained it from the police.

The Kurds I spoke to had come to Britain in order to escape the brutality of Saddam Hussein's regime. Perhaps their most meaningful emotional connection with Britain was a love for Manchester United, which was why they kept the souvenirs in their flat.

The Manchester police discovered nothing else suspicious.

Nevertheless the police probably viewed the Manchester United souvenirs as potential evidence of a bomb plot. This evidence was then prematurely leaked, through unofficial police sources, to the press.

Manchester police then encouraged the story to run by issuing public statements that, while falling a long way short of giving outright confirmation, could be read as corroborating the story.

Disgracefully, the Greater Manchester Police refused to launch an investigation into the numerous leaks.The reporting of this incident was inflammatory and misleading. It caused needless alarm among millions of TV viewers and newspaper readers. It stirred up anti-Islamic prejudice. It ruined the lives of several of the suspects. They lost their homes, their jobs and their friends as a result. They have never received a personal apology, either from the police or from the press.

HOW TONY BLAIR MISLED THE NATION

On 28 February 2005, with the Prevention of Terrorism Bill being discussed in Parliament, Tony Blair made the following comment to listeners to Women's Hour:

"What they [the security services] say is that you have got to give us powers in between mere surveillance of these people - there are several hundred of them in this country who we believe are engaged in plotting or trying to commit terrorist acts - you have got to give us power in between just surveying them and being sure enough to prosecute them beyond reasonable doubt. There are people out there who are determined to destroy our way of life and there is no point in us being naïve about it. "

Anyone listening to the Prime Minister's remarks must have felt that, within days of the Prevention of Terrorism Act being passed, the "several hundred" individuals plotting to wreak devastation through Britain would have been under lock and key.

And yet that is not the case at all.

Nearly a year has gone by and yet no more than 17 individuals have been made subject to control orders. The Prime Minister's suggestion that the security services were demanding new powers in order to deal with a new category of terrorist suspect turns out to have been nonsense. His figure of " several hundred" terrorists plotting mayhem seems to have been plucked out of thin air.

RICIN

In early 2003 just as the Government was seeking to persuade the British people to wage war against Saddam Hussein in order to prevent him distributing weapons of mass destruction to terrorists, the police made a significant announcement.

They had, they said, foiled a terrorist ring in its attempt to launch a chemical attack in Britain using the deadly poison ricin.

According to a press release from Scotland Yard issued in the names of the deputy chief medical officer, Dr Pat Troop, and Assistant Commissioner David Veness of the Metropolitan Police, ricin had been found in a flat in Wood Green, north London.

The Government latched on to the news. On 7 January, the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, and the Health Secretary, John Reid, issued a joint statement stating that "traces of ricin" had been found. The Prime Minister joined in by warning that the discovery highlighted the dangers from weapons of mass destruction, adding: "The arrests which were made show this danger is present and real and with us now. Its potential is huge."

It is unusual, and potentially prejudicial, for ministers to comment on upcoming court cases. Nevertheless, as the ricin case moved towards trial, ministers continued to regard the ricin trial as an important publicity resource. In due course, the trial judge was provoked into warning the Home Secretary to curb his public remarks for fear of prejudicing the case.

No ricin was ever found in the Wood Green flat - just a small number of ingredients for the manufacture of ricin. The announcement from David Veness and Pat Troop that "a small amount of the material recovered from the Wood Green premises has tested positive for the presence of ricin poison" was misleading: the tests were only capable of indicating that ricin might be present. But they did not establish its presence.

On 7 January, chemical weapons experts at the government research facility at Porton Down carried out more accurate tests into the presence of ricin. These tests established that there was no ricin. Curiously, Porton Down apparently did not pass on this information to the British Government until late March. And apparently the Government never asked for the results of this definitive test. The existence of ricin continued to be proclaimed for over two years.

MUSLIM WORKING GROUPS

In the wake of the London bombings, the Prime Minister made a series of announcements aimed at averting another catastrophe. One of the most visible was the setting up of seven task forces to investigate Muslim extremism and to recommend initiatives for tackling it. This was a considerable enterprise by any standards, requiring deep learning and insight, and generous resources.

But Tony Blair's task forces into the roots of Muslim extremism were given six weeks to do their business. They seem to have met just three times before reaching their conclusions. One of the Muslim leaders involved, the Liberal Democrat peer Kishwer Falkner, told us: "When we agreed to be on the working groups and we were told what the deadlines were, we were taken aback. We spoke to one another and queried whether we were just being set up as a tokenistic exercise, because it didn't seem to me, in the middle of August, when half the country is on holiday, that two or three meetings of a couple of hours each would set right a host of intractable and difficult long-term problems to do with how we co-exist, how we integrate with each other.

Falkner feels that the recommendation of her working parties were second-guessed by the Prime Minister's 12-point plan, announced just two weeks after the working parties were set up. She says she was: "... completely dismayed, within days of being set up, to discover in the speech the Prime Minister made on 5 August, that he was proceeding full steam ahead with a raft of measures without waiting for us to come up with our recommendations, or indeed our analysis of the problems. And the raft of measures was completely counter to reducing alienation and extremism. In fact, if anything, it was going to increase alienation in terms of the Muslim community.

Her criticism was echoed by Haras Rafiq, co-founder of Bridges TV (UK), a Muslim television organisation which will start broadcasting later this year. He told us: "The brief was to find ways or find a solution to the problem of extremism and radicalisation within the Muslim community. Now let's just reflect on that. Find a solution for extremism and radicalisation in the Muslim community in the UK, that's a huge piece of work. It isn't something that can be tackled, you know, in the space of a month, two months. The whole process smacked to me a little bit of presentationalism and to be seen to be doing something rather than actually producing an effective and constructive piece of work."

It is hard to regard these task forces as a great deal more than some shallow spin from the Government. In the three years before the London bombings, the Government had commissioned two major enquiries into the problems of Muslim segregation and extremism - Ted Cantle's report in the wake of the Bradford riots and a government report of 2004, Young Muslims and Extremism - and largely dismissed both. The idea that Tony Blair's h urriedly formed and short-lived Muslim working groups could provide a better analysis than either of these two earlier studies was absurd.

CONCLUSION

The Government has persistently failed to tell the truth either to itself or to the British public about the terror threat in Britain. These failures of diagnosis have led to failures of response. An example is the Prime Minister's denial that there is a connection between the Iraq war and domestic terrorism. That denial is not merely false. It also inhibits the kind of deep understanding of the motives of Muslim terrorists which the Prime Minister presumably wants.
The defeat in the House of Commons of the Government's proposals for 90 days detention without trial for terrorist suspects was represented at the time as an indication of Tony Blair's political weakness. This analysis missed the point. That Commons defeat signalled a national crisis in public trust in politicians, the police and the security services. Consider this: the Prime Minister of the day, fully backed by the police, had thrown his weight behind a measure he described as crucial for national security and the fight against terrorism. And yet it was comfortably rejected by MPs.

This collapse in trust has come about because few people now believe what the Prime Minister, the security services and the police tell us about security matters. This dissonance is a massive problem. Britain today faces a threat from international and domestic terrorism which is far more dangerous and insidious than anything it has confronted before. We need to trust our politicians, our police, and the media. But that trust has been betrayed.

In Italy judge Felice Casson discovers documents on Operation Gladio in the archives of the Italian military secret service in Rome and forces Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti to confirm the existence of a secret army within the state to parliament. As Andreotti insists that Italy had not been the only country involved in the conspiracy the secret anti-communist stay-behind armies are discovered across Western Europe.

In Switzerland Colonel Herbert Alboth, a former commander of the Swiss secret stay-behind army P26, in a confidential letter to the Defence Departement declares that he is willing to reveal 'the whole truth'. Thereafter he is found in his house stabbed with his own military bayonet.

In Belgium the NATO linked stay-behind headquarters Allied Clandestine Committee (ACC) meets on October 23 and 24 under the presidency of Belgian General Van Calster, director of the Belgian military secret service SGR.

In Belgium on November 5 NATO categorically denies the allegations of Prime Minister Andreotti concerning NATO's involvement in Operation Gladio and secret unorthdox warfare in Western Europe. The next day NATO explains that the denial of the previous day had been false while refusing to answer any further questions.

Dr. Daniele Ganser, of the Center for Security Studies at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich has written a book called, “NATO’s Secret Armies. Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe.”

During the Cold War, European governments and secret services conspired with a NATO-backed operation to engineer attacks in their own countries in order to manipulate the population to reject socialism and communism.

It was called “the strategy of tension” and it was carried out by members of secret stay-behind armies organized by NATO and funded by the CIA in Italy, Portugal, Germany, Spain, and other European countries.

The strategy apparently involved supplying right-wing terrorists with explosives to carry out terrorist acts which were then blamed on left-wing groups to keep them out of power.

Only three countries, Italy, Belgium, and Switzerland, have had a parliamentary investigation into NATO’s role and a public report...

It all began during WWII when British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, ordered a secret army to be created to fight communism. Allen Dulles, the first chief of the CIA, worked out the original plan, and British MI6 and special forces teamed up with the CIA to train “stay- behind armies” in Western Europe to counter a possible Soviet invasion...

It turns out that what Washington meant by counter-terrorism, might often have been, well, terrorism...

According to Ganser, the secret army was behind waves of attacks in Italy in the 1970s.

In Spain, it worked with Franco and may have supported over a 1000 attacks.

In Germany, it had standing plans to murder leaders of the Social Democrat party in case of a Soviet invasion.

It carried out terrorist actions against President de Gaulle and the Algerian peace plan in France.

It seems to have been involved in the assassination of Amilcar Cabral and Eduardo Mondlane, prominent leaders in African liberation in the Portugese colonies.

It was involved in the coup against Greek Prime Minister Papandreou.

It fomented terrorism against the Kurds in Turkey...

The secret armies were first outed in August 1990 when then Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti confirmed the existence of Gladio, Latin for sword, a super secret group squirreled away in the military secret service, that had been manipulating the public with terrorist acts that it blamed on the Italian left.

NATO’s reaction to Andreotti’s revelation was first denial, then stone-walling, and finally a closed-doors admission to the ambassadors of the European countries.

Since then, although a former CIA director William Colby has confirmed the creation of the stay-behind command centers and networks, NATO itself has withheld details...

One of Gladio’s operatives said, “You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple. They were supposed to force these people, the Italian public, to turn to the state to ask for greater security.”

The Daily Mirror, 20 February 2006, reported that two Iraqi teenagers, brutally beaten by UK troops, face a "brutal" grilling - from their own side.

The youths were among four filmed being beaten by baton-wielding soldiers.

Lockerbie - new forensic tests suggest evidence was planted by the CIA

On 19 February 2006, The Mail on Sunday reported that new forensic tests have been carried out by the lawyers representing Al Megrahi, the Libyan jailed in connection with the Lockerbie bombing.

Defence experts simulated the Lockerbie explosion. The results showed that the device which detonated the bomb could not have survived the explosion.

According to The Mail on Sunday: "Sources close to Megrahi's lawyers said the new tests pointed to the evidence having been planted at the scene of the crash...

"The source added that Megrahi's legal team claimed they had obtained 'clear proof' that investigators had 'planted and manipulated' evidence...

"He said... if there is any justice in Scotland... certain Scottish police officers will be jailed for their part in the proceedings...

"Megrahi's lawyers already have a sworn statement from a retired Scottish police officer confirming that evidence had been planted to secure the Libyan's conviction.

"A similar claim was made by a former CIA agent...

"The ex-CIA man (claimed) that the fragment of circuit board had been planted under orders from a very high level in the organisation...

"The fragment was found by two policeman during a search of a wood near Newcastleton, 35 miles from Lockerbie.

"It was later identified by the CIA's Thomas Thurman as being part of a sophisticated timer device made by the Swiss firm of Mebo.

"Thurman was later unmasked as a fraud who had given false evidence in American murder trials..."

What does Aangirfan think? We guess that when the government has stopped blaming the Libyans for Lockerbie, the government will start blaming some other lot of Moslems, such as the Palestinians, Syrians or Iranians.

We reckon that the real culprits, the people who were smuggling heroin on Pan Am planes, may be too powerful to prosecute.

An internal investigation by Pan Am is believed to have found that the bomb planted on Flight 103 was NOT put on the plane in Malta.

The Pan Am report is believed to have concluded that the bomb was not aimed at the killing of Americans in general, but was targeted specifically to kill a small band of DIA operatives that had uncovered a drugs ring run by a CIA unit in Lebanon.

The drugs-ring is said to have been set up by Israeli Mossad agents.

99 per cent of UK Moslems thought the London tube bombers were wrong.

A very large number of white Britons probably want hanging and flogging for certain types of criminal. There is a worry about increasingly violent streets.

A large number of white Britons no longer trust the criminal justice system.

A poll of UK Moslems has been carried out.

The poll carried out for the Sunday Telegraph, 19/02/2006, suggests 60% of UK Moslems do not want Sharia law in any part of the UK. But around 40% seem to think that Sharia law is the way to reduce violence and drug taking on our streets.

The ICM opinion poll showed that 99 per cent of UK Moslems thought the London tube bombers were wrong to carry out the atrocity.

50pc said interracial relations were worsening.

91 per cent still say they feel loyal to Britain.

Nearly two thirds thought the video images shown last week of British troops beating Iraqi youths were symptomatic of a wider problem in Iraq. Half did not think the soldiers would be "appropriately punished".

What do we think?

Fortunately, 99% of Moslems thought the tube bombings were wrong!

Unfortunately the ICM poll did not ask Moslems if they thought the security services were behind 9 11 and the tube bombings.

Sadly, 40% of Moslems appear to like Sharia law. Perhaps these people could be encouraged to go and live in Saudi Arabia.

We can imagine some Moslem women and even some 'white Christian' women wanting Sharia law as a way of ridding the streets of violent youths and drug pushers.

But, experience of Sharia law in certain Moslem countries suggests that it is the petty criminals who end up being taken to court. The criminals in the government and the military are usually untouchables.

Women may feel safer in strict Islamic countries. But, have countries such as Pakistan been able to rid themselves of drugs and violence. No.

Singapore has managed, more or less, to keep its streets safe. But is this because Singapore executes all drugs offenders or is this because Singapore has tried to keep some sleaze and violence out of the media?

The real answer to crime is to clean up the media. No more Rupert Murdoch. No more nightly bombardment on TV with sleaze and violence.

And severe punishments for drugs offences? We would favour harsh punishments for any CIA operatives who are smuggling heroin into Europe.

Sadly it has been the Tony Blair policy to allow into the UK, in order to boost the economy, lots and lots of immigrants, even if they are poorly educated. We need immigrants, but not the ones who carry guns and sell drugs.

TWO American fingerprint experts were warned by the FBI to back off from the Shirley McKie case for fear it would scupper the trial of the Lockerbie bombers.

Lockerbie may have been about drug smuggling by the CIA. The evidence at the Lockerbie trial may have been faked. There is a suspicion that top people within the Scottish police, legal profession and government were persuaded by the CIA and FBI to take part in a cover-up of CIA crimes.

In Scotland, at about the same time as the Lockerbie trial, there was a case, involving finger-print evidence, called the McKie case.

Scotland on Sunday has been passed documents (about the McKie case) obtained under Freedom of Information legislation.

(Scotland on Sunday has seen) an e-mail written by a senior official in the Scottish Executive Justice Department, Sheena Maclaren, to another senior Justice Department official, John Rafferty...

On September 20, 2001, Maclaren wrote: "James Mackay, then DCC Tayside police, was appointed to lead the investigation of the issues relating to fingerprint evidence. On 3 August 2000, we were informed that investigations so far suggested that the evidence given in court by... SCRO (Scottish Criminal Record Office) fingerprint personnel was 'so significantly distorted that without further explanation, the SCRO identification likely amounts to collective manipulation and collective collusion'."

Mackay's explosive report into the McKie case that August came three months after Colin Boyd began the prosecution of Libyan suspects Abdelbaset Al Megrahi and Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah. The eyes of the world were focused on Scottish justice. What would it have said of that system if - just as the Crown was trying to convict the bombers - it emerged that fingerprint officials had been involved in "criminality and cover-up"?

Boyd strenuously denies that Lockerbie has any relevance to his judgments regarding the McKie case. When Iain McKie first raised the issue in 2000, Crown Office officials declared that Lockerbie "had not affected in any way the response from this or indeed any other department of the Scottish Executive to the issues raised by you."

But there is clear proof that senior justice chiefs had a stake in both cases; SCRO director Harry Bell, for example - whose agency was coming under such scrutiny - was a central figure in the Lockerbie investigation, having been given the key role in the crucial Maltese wing of the investigation, and given evidence in court.

Today's revelation that two American fingerprint experts who savaged the SCRO over the McKie case were asked by the FBI to "back off" suggests that plenty of people were aware of the danger that the case could undermine the Lockerbie trial.

Former MP Tam Dalyell - who has long campaigned on the Lockerbie case - said: "I have always felt that there was something deeply wrong with both the McKie case and the Lockerbie judgment. It is deeply dismaying for those of us who were believers in Scottish justice. The Crown Office regard the Lockerbie case as their flagship case and they will go to any lengths to defend their position."

The pressure for a full public inquiry is now growing day by day.

It is understood that, this week, the Scottish Parliament's Justice 1 Committee will consider launching a full parliamentary inquiry. One thing is sure: this murky affair looks set to rock the foundations of Scotland's criminal justice system.

• SCOTLAND on Sunday revealed last week that justice officials were warned six years ago by police of "cover-up and criminality" in the Shirley McKie fingerprint case. Our story was picked up across Scotland, leading to calls for a judicial inquiry from MSPs.

Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson is now under growing pressure to act over the scandal but - nearly two weeks on - has so far refused to talk once about why ministers decided to offer £750,000 to Shirley McKie, just as she was about to take her case to court.

Lord Advocate Colin Boyd is also in the firing line, over his decision not to press charges against fingerprint experts, despite the allegations of criminality. Jim Wallace, Justice Minister when the McKie scandal broke, is also under fire. He was aware of the allegations but failed to act. First Minister Jack McConnell is under pressure to call a public inquiry.

David Grieve, the senior fingerprint expert at Illinois State police, said that FBI agents pleaded with him to stay silent, fearing the case "would taint the people involved in Lockerbie".

Campaigners for the McKie family last night claimed that the plea to "let everything drop" shed new light on why the former policewoman was denied justice. They believe that the Crown was determined to protect the reputation of the Scottish justice system at a time when it was coming under international scrutiny.

The astonishing claims come as Scotland on Sunday reveals that:

• former justice minister Jim Wallace was aware six years ago that fingerprint experts at the Scottish Criminal Records Office (SCRO) were accused of "collective manipulation and collective collusion", yet they were allowed to return to work two years later;

• MSPs are preparing to launch their own parliamentary inquiry into the scandal to get to the truth of the allegations.

Wertheim and Grieve, both internationally respected fingerprint experts, were central in clearing McKie in 1999 when she was accused of having left her fingerprint at a crime scene. The case left the Scottish justice system open to claims its fingerprint evidence was unsafe. FBI officers took both aside before the Lockerbie trial in the Hague began in February 2000.
Grieve, the senior fingerprint expert at Illinois State Police, said: "I was asked not to mention anything about the case and not to publicise it because we had to think about the higher goal, which was Lockerbie."

He also claims that the FBI had been visited weeks earlier by an official from the SCRO.

"I was pulled aside and given a lecture on the importance of not embarrassing a 'sister agency' which had 'very important and high profile' cases pending of an international significance. I knew the reference was to the Pan-Am bombing," he said.

Wertheim, a fingerprint expert of 20 years' experience, added: "I was at the FBI for a meeting and one of their people approached me and made the suggestion that I let everything drop."
Iain McKie, Shirley McKie's father, said yesterday that he believed Lockerbie provided a motive for the 'cover up' over his daughter's case.

He said: "I have always suspected the Lockerbie connection, but when I put it to the Lord Advocate, I got nothing from them. I could never understand why they treated my daughter like that. Lockerbie would give them that motivation."

Former MSP Mike Russell, who has campaigned for the McKie family, said: "This new information suggests the context for the Shirley McKie miscarriage of justice. It suggests that this context is much bigger than previously thought.

"It places the Lord Advocate (Colin Boyd) in a completely untenable position and he too must now be considering his future. If he was influenced by this [Lockerbie] then he cannot continue as Lord Advocate."

SNP MSP Alex Neil, another campaigner for the McKies, said: "A lot of people think that there was pressure put on the FBI by the Scottish law authorities which maybe explains some of the bizarre decisions taken by the Lord Advocate."

The link between Lockerbie and the McKie case goes deeper as several police chiefs and prosecutors were involved in both. The director of the SCRO at the time of the allegations of criminality, Harry Bell, was one of the key police officers whose evidence led to the conviction of Abdel-baset Al Megrahi.

Lord Advocate Colin Boyd led the Lockerbie trial, securing a conviction in January 2001. In September of that year, despite the evidence presented by the Mackay report, he decided not to prosecute the SCRO officers over the McKie case.

The SCRO admitted yesterday that its officials had visited the FBI in 1999 and 2000, but insisted the trips had nothing to do with the McKie case.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Crown Office strongly denied that the decision not to prosecute the SCRO officers had been taken with Lockerbie in mind. She said: "SCRO was not involved in any way with fingerprinting in the Lockerbie case, the evidence of which was never disputed at all."

Boyd declared on Friday that he had decided not to prosecute the four SCRO officials because of "conflicting" evidence from fingerprint experts. He added that a prosecution would have to prove criminal intent.

Scottish fingerprinting has become a laughing stock around the world...

Independent experts have also been highly critical about SCRO's crime-scene investigation work, described by Bayle as the worst he's ever seen. The organisation must be forced to acknowledge its many flaws.

There is also a pressing need to break the strong link between the SCRO and the police service, especially Strathclyde Police. The current director, John McLean, was an Assistant Chief Constable with the force. His predecessor, Harry Bell, was a Det Chief Superintendent there.

Agencies involved in detecting and solving crime, the police, forensic examiners, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, tend to form bonds and pull together. But that has to be resisted as it undermines the necessary independence of each of those bodies.

Scientists and analysts who examine crime scenes for fingerprints, traces of DNA and any other clues should simply be concerned with finding the best evidence and passing it on. They should not become part of the drive to secure the conviction of an accused person. It has been suggested to Scotland on Sunday that SCRO experts have in the past been given targets to meet in making positive identifications. That should never happen. A print either matches a crime scene mark or it does not.

International experts have proved the mark in Marion Ross's home was not left by McKie; five colleagues of the four who insisted it was refused to support their identification; an independent inquiry by senior police officers found evidence of criminality on the part of the SCRO. Yet the organisation, with no dissent from the Executive or the Crown Office, continues to stand by its discredited experts. It does not bode well for Scottish justice.

THE pressure on Jack McConnell to order a judicial inquiry into the Shirley McKie case became unbearable last night after a slew of fresh forensic evidence was unearthed by the Sunday Herald.

Investigations by this newspaper have uncovered damning material alleging “collective manipulation of evidence” and “fabrication” on the part of fingerprint officers at the Scottish Criminal Record Office (SCRO) in Glasgow.

The allegations follow revelations last week that a police inquiry led by James Mackay, then deputy chief constable of Tayside Police, found evidence in 2000 of “criminality and cover up” among SCRO experts.

In a confidential precognition of Mackay he revealed his “surprise” that there was no prosecution against “four experts (and perhaps others) at SCRO in light of the sufficiency of evidence of criminality involved”.

However, for the first time, new material shows that the allegations of criminality against experts go beyond the erroneous McKie print – found at the murder scene of Kilmarnock woman Marion Ross in 1997. It now makes the position held by SCRO experts – that they made no mistakes in the Ross investigation – utterly untenable.

Previously unseen reports, compiled by British and US fingerprint experts for the lawyer Cameron Fyfe, allege that a second SCRO fingerprint identification in the case, which led to the conviction of David Asbury for Ross’s murder, was “pure fabrication”.

THE United Nations has savaged the Crown Office's handling of the Lockerbie trial claiming the outcome was rigged through the unfair suppression of evidence; it was politically influenced by the USA; and the court had no grounds to return a guilty verdict.

Dr Hans Kochler, who was handpicked by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to act as the international observer during the trial in Holland, hinted that the trial was rigged, claimed the guilty verdict handed down in February to Abdelbasset Ali Mohamed Al Megrahi was "arbitrary" and "irrational" and gave his tacit support for an acquittal at the planned appeal. Megrahi's co-accused, Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah, was found not guilty.

Kochler's report, which calls for the case to be re- investigated and is heavily critical of the conduct of the three trial judges - Lord Sutherland, Lord Coulsfield and Lord MacLean - has sparked a bitter war of words between the Scottish Executive, the Crown Office and the United Nations. A spokesman for Colin Boyd, the Lord Advocate, said the UN and its international observer had "completely misunderstood" the trial and were ignorant of Scots law.

SCOTLAND'S most senior prosecutor broke his silence over the Shirley McKie fingerprint case yesterday to defend his decision not to bring charges against anyone over the alleged "cover-up".

Colin Boyd, QC, the Lord Advocate, took the unprecedented step of writing to George Reid, the Scottish Parliament's Presiding Officer, amid growing demands for a full public inquiry.

Ms McKie, 43, a former Strathclyde Police detective, was wrongly accused of leaving her fingerprint at a murder scene and has fought a nine-year battle to clear her name. She claims the failure to prosecute anyone at the Scottish Criminal Records Office (SCRO) over the incident is as a result of a conspiracy by the legal establishment.

But the Lord Advocate said he chose not to proceed with a criminal case because of "conflicting" evidence from fingerprint experts. He also defended the original decision to prosecute Ms McKie for perjury, saying there was "sufficient evidence in law" for a trial.

Last night, Shirley's father, Iain McKie, said he was "disgusted" at Mr Boyd's letter and insisted he had "irrefutable" evidence to support a criminal prosecution. The Lord Advocate was also accused of "trying to defend the indefensible" by one MSP.

CIA aircraft operating under the cover of post office box firms and a humanitarian assistance operation are reportedly engaged in flying heroin out of Afghanistan as part of a 1980s-style covert operation to sell drugs for off-the-books operating capital.

The narcotics smuggling operation also maintains a presence in Geneva, Switzerland where cash can be easily laundered. A reputed relative of CIA Director Porter Goss (last name is Goss), who is based near Geneva, is reportedly involved in the drug smuggling operation. Sources confirm that Goss has re-engaged a number of CIA assets from the Iran-Contra scandal to participate in the operation.

CIA contract flights are being used to transport high-grade Afghan heroin from the nation to black markets in Europe (particularly Turkey and Albania) and North America...

Goss has reportedly re-engaged Iran-contra operatives who were involved in drug smuggling activities to illegally support the contras and other off-the-books CIA activities in the 1980s.

In particular, the CIA drug smuggling activities in Afghanistan are centered on Christian fundamentalist groups, including "aviation ministries," that operated various CIA money laundering fronts in Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala during the contra wars.

Belgian TV came up with an anonymous witness who claimed that leading Socialist politician, Guy Mathot, had ordered Cools to be killed.

In 1994 Mathot was charged with corruption over kickbacks paid to Belgium's Socialist parties.

Willy Claes was NATO Secretary General and a Belgian. He was caught up in the Mathot kickbacks affair and was forced to resign.

Melchior Wathelet was the judge who released Dutroux from prison in 1991. Wathelet was Belgium's judge at the European Court of Justice.

Wathelet was Belgium's Justice Minister at the time when Cools was shot dead. Cools' son called for Wathelet and other top judges to be removed from office.

In 1996 there were suggestions that the gangs involved in the Cools' killing had been involved with Dutroux.

1,300 children disappeared in the Brussels region between 1991 and 1996. According to government official Mr De Baets, what happened after several of these disappearances was that Marc Dutroux paid large sums of money into various bank accounts.

Sentence has been passed in the Belgian "trial of the century" of the pedophile child murderer Marc Dutroux and his accomplices.

The construction of the new compound, run by the Direction de la Securité du Territoire (DST), the Moroccan secret police, adds to a substantial body of evidence that Morocco is one of America’s principal partners in the secret “rendition” programme in which the CIA flies prisoners to third countries for interrogation.

Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and other groups critical of the policy have compiled dossiers detailing the detention and apparent torture of radical Islamists at the DST’s current headquarters, at Temara, near Rabat.

A recent inquiry into rendition by the Council of Europe, led by Dick Marty, the Swiss MP, highlighted a pattern of flights between Washington, Guantanamo Bay and Rabat’s military airport at Sale.

French intelligence and diplomatic sources said the most recent such flight was in the first week in December, when four suspects were seen being led blindfolded and handcuffed from a Boeing 737 at Sale and transferred into a fleet of American vehicles...

Video shows British troops brutally beating Iraqi children inside military compound. Video shows corpse.

A video, obtained by the News of the World and shown on BBC TV on 11 February 2006, shows a group of British soldiers brutally beating and kicking defenceless Iraqi teenagers in an army compound.

The footage shows eight soldiers pulling four teenagers off the street and dragging them into their army base, before beating them with batons, as well as punching and kicking them.

The Ministry of Defence issued the following statement: 'We are aware of these very serious allegations and can confirm that they are the subject of an urgent Royal Military Police investigation.'

The video footage was given to the News of the World by a whistleblower.

There have been investigations by MoD prosecutors into a series of serious allegations of abuse by its troops in southern Iraq.

The video was shot from a rooftop in secret by a corporal.

In one of the most brutal scenes, a soldier punches one of the prisoners in the head and the stomach. He is then headbutted and kicked further.

Another scene shows a soldier walking up to one of the boys and kicking him hard between the legs from behind. The boy is seen doubling up in pain.

In some of the worst footage, a prisoner is kicked in the back and the body six times by two soldiers. As he struggles on the floor, one of the soldiers grabs him again by the shoulder, kicks him twice and then begins to hit him on the legs with a baton.

The video also shows footage of a soldier drawing back the blanket over an Iraqi corpse to display it close up to the camera as if it is a trophy.

The informant is quoted as saying: 'These Iraqis were just kids. Most haven't even got shoes on.'

The informant said the video had been shown by the corporal's friends at their home base in Europe. One of those colleagues reported its contents to the tabloid newspaper.

The film is understood to have been taken in early 2004

During the footage, the cameraman - filming from a rooftop - can be clearly heard encouraging his colleagues to abuse the four young prisoners. The cameraman is heard laughing and saying: "Oh yes! Oh Yes! You're gonna get it. Yes, naughty little boys. You little f***ers, you little f***ers. Die. Ha Ha."

The attacks appear to be led by a sergeant.

GORDON BROWN was dealt a major blow to his credibility as the next Prime Minister when the Liberal Democrats sensationally captured the constituency where the Chancellor has his home in a shock by-election result early this morning.

THE stunning election upset in Dunfermline early today has created a massive headache for the Holyrood coalition, even bigger problems for holding Labour together north and south of the border, and potential disaster for Gordon Brown's hopes of becoming prime minister.

In Dunfermline, the Liberal Democrats came second in the General Election in May 2005. The voters, this time, saw the Liberal Democrats as the best people to beat Labour.

The voters were not distracted by media campaigns to discredit the Liberal Democrats.

The Scottish National Party (SNP) came second in the General election in May 2005 in a large number of Labour seats. The SNP stand a good chance of winning some of these seats in future elections.

Tony Blair's Labour Party can only hold on to power by holding on to Scotland, where they traditionally have a large number of seats. Dunfermline, a traditionally safe Labour seat in Scotland, has now fallen to the Liberals. The decline of Labour should continue throughout the United Kingdom.

The good people of Dunfermline and West Fife are to congratulated on throwing out the Labour Party.

If Labour is to survive it needs to avoid pro-war leaders such as Tony Blair, Gordon Brown or John Reid. The Labour Party should consider replacing Blair with someone like Michael Meacher.

James is not keen on American attitudes to child upbringing. James states that America is the developed nation with the most crime.

James writes about the TV series Brat Camp. We meet seven British girls who are depicted as having been spoilt or over-indulged; nothing else is mentioned about what has made them like this, such as their parents or the society in which they have grown up.

All guzzle drugs and booze, most start having sex in their early teens, and crave expensive clothes and fame.

This only mirrors the mixed messages of 21st-century Britain.

During his time in charge, our god-fearing Prime Minister has encouraged us to take on record levels of debt (credit card and mortgage), liberalised licensing laws and reclassified cannabis to Class C.

At the same time, he has exhibited authoritarian, rather than rehabilitative, approaches to misbehaviour.

The prison population has swelled, and hardly a week has gone by without a coercive gimmick, from ASBOs to the latest serving of tosh, the “Respect” agenda.

Just how confusing are those contrasting messages for a 15-year-old girl or her parents?

WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

In terms of preventing delinquency, parents who look after small children are the most important citizens in the country.

Employers must offer them much more flexible hours and discourage long ones.

Instead of turning SureStart (the scheme to help low-income parents) into a giant crèche in which poor mothers dump their babies to go back to work, Blair should have used it to help them look after their babies better.

James explains how parents can cure their children of bad behaviour:

Physically forcing or blackmailing children to comply will repeat the authoritarian parenting that is often the cause of the misbehaviour in the first place.

James believes that the vast majority of delinquent children have been neglected by parents.

There will be short-term gains from detoxing and from having clear boundaries provided at the camp. But the rage resulting from unmet infantile needs, or chaotic punishment schedules, or demands for unquestioning obedience, remains untouched.

Being trapped in a wilderness with burly guards, where you are told that you will not escape until you comply means that only the most stupid or disturbed will not, sooner or later, realise that compliance is the only way out; but it will not change the core psychology that is causing the problem, only the behaviour, and then only briefly.

At best, it results in crude adoption of the values, as in “I want to be one of the jailers” or “I want to become the policeman who is lacking inside my head”.

Like so many TV programmes about parenting that now infest our screens, Brat Camp is not a bad metaphor for Labour’s failure to reduce delinquency.

James's Guidelines for parents:

Be assertive, not aggressive.

Communicate, don’t coerce.

If you lose your temper, explain why after you have calmed down.

See it from their point of view — they are not little adults.

Engage with the child’s fantasy life — join their imaginary worlds, and find out what’s troubling them.

Be consistent.

Respect and enjoy their idiosyncrasies.
