Michael Meacher was the UK's environment minister from 1997 to 2003.

Now, in the 10 September 2005 Guardian, he is suggesting that the intelligence agencies may thwart the London bombings investigation.
Meacher looks at the links between the security services and certain 'Moslem' groups who may be linked to the London bombs.
The US used Pakistanis from Britain to fight in Bosnia, in order to weaken the Serb government's hold on Yugoslavia.
Meacher writes:
'According to a recent report by the Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation, a contingent was also sent by the Pakistani government, then led by Benazir Bhutto, at the request of the Clinton administration. This contingent was formed from the Harkat-ul- Ansar (HUA) terrorist group and trained by the ISI. The report estimates that about 200 Pakistani Muslims living in the UK went to Pakistan, trained in HUA camps and joined the HUA's contingent in Bosnia. Most significantly, this was "with the full knowledge and complicity of the British and American intelligence agencies".
'As the 2002 Dutch government report on Bosnia makes clear, the US provided a green light to groups on the state department list of terrorist organisations, including the Lebanese-based Hizbullah, to operate in Bosnia - an episode that calls into question the credibility of the subsequent "war on terror".
'For nearly a decade the US helped Islamist insurgents linked to Chechnya, Iran and Saudi Arabia destabilise the former Yugoslavia. The insurgents were also allowed to move further east to Kosovo. By the end of the fighting in Bosnia there were tens of thousands of Islamist insurgents in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo; many then moved west to Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
'Less well known is evidence of the British government's relationship with a wider Islamist terrorist network. During an interview on Fox TV this summer, the former US federal prosecutor John Loftus reported that British intelligence had used the al-Muhajiroun group in London to recruit Islamist militants with British passports for the war against the Serbs in Kosovo. Since July Scotland Yard has been interested in an alleged member of al-Muhajiroun, Haroon Rashid Aswat, who some sources have suggested could have been behind the London bombings.
'According to Loftus, Aswat was detained in Pakistan after leaving Britain, but was released after 24 hours. He was subsequently returned to Britain from Zambia, but has been detained solely for extradition to the US, not for questioning about the London bombings. Loftus claimed that Aswat is a British-backed double agent, pursued by the police but protected by MI6.
'One British Muslim of Pakistani origin radicalised by the civil war in Yugoslavia was LSE-educated Omar Saeed Sheikh. He is now in jail in Pakistan under sentence of death for the killing of the US journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002 - although many (including Pearl's widow and the US authorities) doubt that he committed the murder. However, reports from Pakistan suggest that Sheikh continues to be active from jail, keeping in touch with friends and followers in Britain.
Sheikh was recruited as a student by Jaish-e-Muhammad (Army of Muhammad), which operates a network in Britain. It has actively recruited Britons from universities and colleges since the early 1990s, and has boasted of its numerous British Muslim volunteers.
'Investigations in Pakistan have suggested that on his visits there Shehzad Tanweer, one of the London suicide bombers, contacted members of two outlawed local groups and trained at two camps in Karachi and near Lahore. Indeed the network of groups now being uncovered in Pakistan may point to senior al-Qaida operatives having played a part in selecting members of the bombers' cell. The Observer Research Foundation has argued that there are even "grounds to suspect that the [London] blasts were orchestrated by Omar Sheikh from his jail in Pakistan".
'Why then is Omar Sheikh not being dealt with when he is already under sentence of death? Astonishingly his appeal to a higher court against the sentence was adjourned in July for the 32nd time and has since been adjourned indefinitely. This is all the more remarkable when this is the same Omar Sheikh who, at the behest of General Mahmood Ahmed, head of the ISI, wired $100,000 to Mohammed Atta, the leading 9/11 hijacker, before the New York attacks, as confirmed by Dennis Lormel, director of FBI's financial crimes unit.
'Yet neither Ahmed nor Omar appears to have been sought for questioning by the US about 9/11. Indeed, the official 9/11 Commission Report of July 2004 sought to downplay the role of Pakistan with the comment: "To date, the US government has not been able to determine the origin of the money used for the 9/11 attacks. Ultimately the question is of little practical significance" - a statement of breathtaking disingenuousness.
'All this highlights the resistance to getting at the truth about the 9/11 attacks and to an effective crackdown on the forces fomenting terrorist bombings in the west, including Britain. The extraordinary US forbearance towards Omar Sheikh, its restraint towards the father of Pakistan's atomic bomb, Dr AQ Khan, selling nuclear secrets to Iran, Libya and North Korea, the huge US military assistance to Pakistan and the US decision last year to designate Pakistan as a major non-Nato ally in south Asia all betoken a deeper strategic set of goals as the real priority in its relationship with Pakistan. These might be surmised as Pakistan providing sizeable military contingents for Iraq to replace US troops, or Pakistani troops replacing Nato forces in Afghanistan. Or it could involve the use of Pakistani military bases for US intervention in Iran, or strengthening Pakistan as a base in relation to India and China.
'Whether the hunt for those behind the London bombers can prevail against these powerful political forces remains to be seen. Indeed it may depend on whether Scotland Yard, in its attempts to uncover the truth, can prevail over MI6, which is trying to cover its tracks and in practice has every opportunity to operate beyond the law under the cover of national security.'

Anyone who abuses animals is also likely to abuse children and the elderly. Mr. Bush appears to match that profile. Being a criminal sociopath may be just one reason to invoke the 25th Amendment and get this maniac out of the White House. And have the SPCA separate Barney from Bush immediately.
According to well-informed New Orleans sources, New Orleans' wealthiest families, including those who are direct descendants of the French who settled New Orleans (not the Acadians [Cajuns] who were poor refugees from British tyranny in Nova Scotia) are meeting in Dallas today with Bush administration officials, New Orleans city officials, wealthy Texas oilmen, and bankers to plan for the reconstruction of New Orleans. These wealthy New Orleans residents live in the gated community of Audobon Place, a section of the city near the Garden District replete with personal helipads that still has running water and sewage and was only slightly affected by hurricane Katrina. It is now reportedly being patrolled by private Israeli security forces. Yesterday's Wall Street Journal ran a piece with more details on this story.
The Dallas meeting focused on rebuilding and re-zoning New Orleans without the "criminal element," a code word for the city's poor African American community.
These New Orleans residents have been scattered across the United States and are now under the control of FEMA. There is an understanding by the wealthy New Orleans elite that the poor will never be able to return. The Journal reported that the person who chaired the Dallas meeting was Jimmy Riess, one of the wealthy New Orleans elite who also served as Mayor Ray Nagin's Chairman of the Regional Transit Authority, which is in charge of the city's buses, trolleys, and trains. New Orleans sources report that public transportation was purposely not used to evacuate the poor New Orleans residents as a means to depopulate the poorer and more flood-prone sections of the city.
In fact, after the properties in New Orleans poorer communities are razed many of the deed records of the poor and middle class contained in government offices and title companies of Orleans Parish and neighboring Jefferson Parish may end up being casualties of the flood. As one New Orleans source put it, "people will not have proof they ever owned anything." As for renters and residents of public housing, they will be prevented from returning to their native city, according to New Orleans sources. Louisiana's Republican House member Richard Baker, a strong Bush ally, may have tipped his hand about the future plans for New Orleans when he told a group of lobbyists, "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God did."

Africa's debt was trivial compared to what the west really owes Africa.
Joseph Inikori's book, Africans and the Industrial Revolution in England, shows how African consumers, free and enslaved, helped to develop Britain's manufacturing industry.
Africa's palm oil, petroleum, copper, chromium, platinum and in particular gold were and are crucial to the world economy.
The leadership problems in Africa are a result of 'two centuries of slaving, followed by another of colonial despotism'.
Idi Amin came to power in Uganda through British covert action.
Nigeria's generals were supported and manipulated from 1960 onwards in support of Britain's oil interests.
Mugabe 'learned too well from the British how to govern without real popular consent, and how to make the law serve ruthless private interest'.
British statesman, Alec Douglas-Home, agreed with the US president in 1960 that Patrice Lumumba, its elected leader, needed to "fall into a river of crocodiles".
More than 100 black people have died in mysterious circumstances while in police, prison or hospital custody since 1969.
Early this year, Gordon Brown told journalists in Mozambique that Britain should stop apologising for colonialism. The truth is, though, that Britain has never even faced up to the dark side of its imperial history, let alone begun to apologise.
Dr Richard Drayton is a senior lecturer in imperial and extra-European history since 1500 at Cambridge University. His book The Caribbean and the Making of the Modern World will be published in 2006.

Munir was a former human rights leader in Indonesia. Munir was murdered on Garuda flight 974 on September 7, 2004 en route from Singapore to Amsterdam
General Hendropriyono
Hendropriyono was trained by the Americans.
He joined the School of Army Military Command at the Fort Leavenworth, in Missouri, USA, in 1981.
He is known as the Butcher of Lampung for his role in a 1989 massacre.
He reportedly helped fund the army militias which committed genocide in East Timor.
He is a former Minister of Transmigration and Forestry.
He was National Intelligence Chief at the time of the Bali Bomb.
According to a news story in the Sydney Morning Herald, November 2, 2002, the Indonesian security services may have handled the Bali bomb.
According to the Herald-
"Some time around the 30 October 2002, senior officers in the Indonesian military HQ gave a piece of information to a military attache from a Western embassy in Indonesia:- the source of explosive used in the October 12 bombing in Bali was THE HEAD OF THE COUNTER-TERRORISM UNIT WITH THE ARMY'S SPECIAL FORCES."
The father-in-law of the officer concerned is Hendropriyono, Indonesia's spy chief.

BIN (Indonesian security services) Involved in Killing Munir
After having strong suspicions of the role of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) in the poisoning of rights activist Munir, a government-sanctioned fact finding team concluded earlier this week that the agency was involved, according to its report to the President.
"BIN is believed to have been involved in a conspiracy to murder Munir," the team's deputy chairman Asmara Nababan stated on Wednesday on the sidelines of a closed-door meeting to prepare the report.
The report, however, did not definitively state that BIN committed an institutional crime, nor did it state how deeply BIN individuals were involved. In addition they did not find a clear motive behind the murder, mostly because of the agency's reluctance to give the team complete access to certain relevant documents and its arms warehouse.
"We've kept the names of the suspects in our pocket, but we can't determine how far they contributed to the murder," Asmara said.
In its report set for submission to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday, there is the suggestion for the President to order the police to launch a full investigation of some BIN officials, who were in charge when Munir died last September.
The team, whose mandate expires on Thursday, was formed by the President to help the police investigate the case.
A source said the role of each BIN official in the murder was described in the nearly 100-page report, including who played which roles, such as the mastermind and the final executioner.
Another team member, Munarman, hinted that the team would recommend police investigate former BIN chief A.M. Hendropriyono, who previously refused to respond to the team's three summonses.
"I can assure (you) that one of them is a person who strongly reacted to our findings and recently concluded a 'political road show' to approach the legislators," said Munarman, who also heads the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI).
Hendropriyono met with a group of House legislators -- who are currently discussing the Munir case as well -- for a second time on Tuesday. The fact finding team declined an invitation to the meeting. The meeting was intended to give the team members a chance to seek Hendropriyono's clarification, which had eluded them.
Hendropriyono has filed a report with the police against two of the team members for defamation.
In its report, the team also criticizes the police for its poor performance in handling the case, prompting the team to ask the President to establish a supervisory team to ensure the police seriously deal with the case.
"We have learned that the police failed to raise key questions during the questioning of witnesses, including Muchdi," Asmara said, referring to former deputy BIN chief Muchdi PR.

Spy Agency Implicated in Activist's Murder

Although no-one has been charged with last year's murder of Indonesia's foremost human rights activist, Munir Said Thalib, evidence is mounting that the prime suspect in the case, Garuda Airlines pilot Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto, was a member of or working with the National Intelligence Agency (BIN).
Lack of cooperation by BIN and hysterical statements by its former director Ahmad Hendropriyono belittling the investigation, plus his refusal to be questioned, have only strengthened suspicions that BIN masterminded the murder.
Thirty-eight-year-old Munir died aboard a Garuda flight shortly before it landed in Amsterdam on September 7. His death was originally blamed on a heart attack but the autopsy found he died as a result of arsenic poisoning.
Priyanto gave up his business-class seat to Munir on the Jakarta-Singapore leg of the flight. Why Priyanto who was off duty at the time and was on the flight has not been explained and his travel authorisation issued by Garuda's vice-president of corporate security, Ramelgia Anwar, was later found to have been signed and typed on September 17, more than a week after the incident.
Two flight attendants who prepared and served Munir's meal are also suspects.
Munir rose to prominence in 1998, when he was involved in investigating the abduction and torture of pro-democracy activists by the notorious elite special forces, Kopassus.
Kopassus, which has enforced terror in East Timor and Aceh, has also been linked with Islamist terrorist groups such as Laskar Jihad and Jemaah Islamiah — the latter group has been blamed for the 2002 Bali bombing and the September 9 bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta.
Munir had criticised BIN over its anti-democratic terrorism bill and colleagues say that at the time of his death he was investigating a corruption case involving Garuda.
Although Priyanto claims he was recruited by BIN in 2002, the first concrete evidence linking him with BIN was revealed on May 18 when the Fact Finding Team (TPF) established by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and tasked with assisting the police investigation revealed that Priyanto had been in phone contact with BIN.
TPF deputy head Asmara Nababan said Priyanto had called a BIN official via his mobile phone several times after Munir's death. "We reported to the president that Polly [Priyanto] had direct contact with someone in BIN", Nababan said. "It means there is a connection [between BIN and Priyanto], which BIN had previously denied. But, we must be cautious as we don't want to implicate BIN as an institution."
Nababan declined to identify the official but according to the Jakarta Post, sources close to the TPF have said they have phone company documents proving calls were made by Priyanto to BIN's "deputy five" between September and October.
Deputy five at that time was Major General Muchdi Purwopranjono, a former Kopassus commander who was sacked following Munir's investigation into the 1998 abductions. He was replaced as the deputy director of BIN in August and although police interviewed him on May 18 they have refused to disclose what they learned.
Priyanto also received calls from Purwopranjono's office over the September-October period. "At least five calls were made from that number to Pollycarpus' mobile phone", Nababan told reporters.
Yudhoyono has formally asked BIN to cooperate but its current director, Syamsir Siregar (who replaced Hendropriyono in October), has so far avoided questioning.
The May 28 Jakarta Post reported that BIN is refusing to provide the TPF with documents on former BIN agents allegedly implicated in the killing. "We need BIN's documents that show whether Pollycarpus was recruited by BIN in 2002 as he has repeatedly claimed. We also need to clarify whether his recruitment was in line with BIN's anti-terrorism policy", said TPF member Rachland Nashidik.
Former BIN secretary general Djazuli has testified to the TPF that Hendropriyono endorsed Priyanto's recruitment. Priyanto also named two other former high-ranking members of BIN who were suspected of knowing about Munir's murder — former BIN deputy chief overseeing the anti-terrorism desk, retired Major General Muchdi and former BIN agent Colonel Bambang Irawan.
The May 27 Jakarta Post reported that a source has said Bambang was the passenger who was seated in the same flight's business class and was believed to "have given a glass of drink mixed with poison to Munir".
"Questioning of the three men concerned and checking all related BIN documents are necessary to clarify all of Pollycarpus' statements", Nashidik said. "We have prepared summonses for the three and are expecting to question them by mid-June. But I'm worried that they are just trying to buy time", he added, pointing out that the TPF will end its six-month term on June 23.
One of the team's highest priorities is to question Hendropriyono. He was one of the Suharto dictatorship's most prominent thugs and was the Jakarta military commander in 1996 when the headquarters of Megawati Sukarnoputri's Indonesian Democratic Party was attacked by military-backed thugs. The attack resulted in the death of at least 50 people and sparked three days of mass rioting.
Ironically, Hendropriyono is now a close aide to Megawati and a member of her party.
Questioning Hendropriyono has not proved easy. For some time his whereabouts were unclear. Then, on May 30, Hendropriyono suddenly lodged a complaint with the police against the TPF saying it had tarnished his reputation by repeatedly connecting him with Munir's death.
Hendropriyono said the TPF had told the media he was in the US and was difficult to track down for questioning. He said he had in fact been in Indonesia since April.
He also lodged a complaint with the Indonesian parliament and is asking it to form a new team that can "work more effectively".
Hendropriyono has also tried to belittle the case by asking what was so special about Munir's death. At a May 30 press conference, Hendropriyono's lawyer, Sjamsu Djalal, said: "And I'm sorry to say this, but who's this Munir anyway that a presidential regulation had to be issued? A lot of people die, but no regulations are ever made [for them]."
When asked if he was willing to appear before the TPF, Hendropriyono remained elusive, saying he had yet to receive a summons. "Where's the summons letter? Send it to me. I don't answer hypothetical questions, such as [would I attend] if I received a summons."
At a press conference the following day, Nashidik told reporters that "the erroneous issue of [his] place of residency, in the United States, actually could have been resolved directly by explaining it to the chairperson of the TPF. [He] could have used the phone [and told us] that he is in Jakarta, not by measures which demonstrate a kind of excessive fear."
Following an interview with Hendropriyono aired on Metro TV on May 31 in which he accused the TPF of "lacking professionalism", human rights activists called on police to detain him for "attempts to avoid investigation".
At a press conference on June 1, Edwin Partogi from the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence questioned Hendropriyono's motives saying that while he claims to respect the legal process he is unwilling to give any information to the TPF.
"We certainly suspect Hendropriyono's sensationalist posture and statements are no more than an effort to provoke the TPF to become caught up in unnecessary matters. It also aims to distract the tremendous amount of public attention [away from] the Munir case", Partogi said.
"The police have sufficient reason to detain Hendropriyono because he has tried to block the investigation", Johnson Panjaitan of the Indonesian Legal Aid and Human Rights Association said.
Panjaitan told journalists that Hendropriyono is trying to intimidate the TPF, citing previous cases where the former BIN boss has sued human rights lawyers to prevent them from proceeding with cases. Panjaitan warned that Hendropriyono still has a lot of power and asked police to prioritise his questioning.
On June 6, Hendropriyono again failed to turn up for a meeting with the TPF, citing unspecified business out of town. Djazuli and Suparto were also due to appear for questioning but neither turned up.
TPF chairperson Police Brigadier General Marsudhi Hanafi announced on June 14 that the team had found documents detailing four plots to kill Munir, involving engineering a car accident and poisoning his food at his office. The fourth plot was to poison him aboard an aircraft. "It was this [plot] which then succeeded", Hanafi told journalists.
Although Hanafi declined to say where the documents were found, he said the TPF now knows where the arsenic was purchased. He said the findings strengthen the suspicion that there was a conspiracy to murder Munir.

BIN (Indonesian security services) Involved in Killing Munir
After having strong suspicions of the role of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) in the poisoning of rights activist Munir, a government-sanctioned fact finding team concluded earlier this week that the agency was involved, according to its report to the President.
"BIN is believed to have been involved in a conspiracy to murder Munir," the team's deputy chairman Asmara Nababan stated on Wednesday on the sidelines of a closed-door meeting to prepare the report.
The report, however, did not definitively state that BIN committed an institutional crime, nor did it state how deeply BIN individuals were involved. In addition they did not find a clear motive behind the murder, mostly because of the agency's reluctance to give the team complete access to certain relevant documents and its arms warehouse.
"We've kept the names of the suspects in our pocket, but we can't determine how far they contributed to the murder," Asmara said.
In its report set for submission to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday, there is the suggestion for the President to order the police to launch a full investigation of some BIN officials, who were in charge when Munir died last September.
The team, whose mandate expires on Thursday, was formed by the President to help the police investigate the case.
A source said the role of each BIN official in the murder was described in the nearly 100-page report, including who played which roles, such as the mastermind and the final executioner.
Another team member, Munarman, hinted that the team would recommend police investigate former BIN chief A.M. Hendropriyono, who previously refused to respond to the team's three summonses.
"I can assure (you) that one of them is a person who strongly reacted to our findings and recently concluded a 'political road show' to approach the legislators," said Munarman, who also heads the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI).
Hendropriyono met with a group of House legislators -- who are currently discussing the Munir case as well -- for a second time on Tuesday. The fact finding team declined an invitation to the meeting. The meeting was intended to give the team members a chance to seek Hendropriyono's clarification, which had eluded them.
Hendropriyono has filed a report with the police against two of the team members for defamation.
In its report, the team also criticizes the police for its poor performance in handling the case, prompting the team to ask the President to establish a supervisory team to ensure the police seriously deal with the case.
"We have learned that the police failed to raise key questions during the questioning of witnesses, including Muchdi," Asmara said, referring to former deputy BIN chief Muchdi PR.

Spy Agency Implicated in Activist's Murder

Although no-one has been charged with last year's murder of Indonesia's foremost human rights activist, Munir Said Thalib, evidence is mounting that the prime suspect in the case, Garuda Airlines pilot Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto, was a member of or working with the National Intelligence Agency (BIN).
Lack of cooperation by BIN and hysterical statements by its former director Ahmad Hendropriyono belittling the investigation, plus his refusal to be questioned, have only strengthened suspicions that BIN masterminded the murder.
Thirty-eight-year-old Munir died aboard a Garuda flight shortly before it landed in Amsterdam on September 7. His death was originally blamed on a heart attack but the autopsy found he died as a result of arsenic poisoning.
Priyanto gave up his business-class seat to Munir on the Jakarta-Singapore leg of the flight. Why Priyanto who was off duty at the time and was on the flight has not been explained and his travel authorisation issued by Garuda's vice-president of corporate security, Ramelgia Anwar, was later found to have been signed and typed on September 17, more than a week after the incident.
Two flight attendants who prepared and served Munir's meal are also suspects.
Munir rose to prominence in 1998, when he was involved in investigating the abduction and torture of pro-democracy activists by the notorious elite special forces, Kopassus.
Kopassus, which has enforced terror in East Timor and Aceh, has also been linked with Islamist terrorist groups such as Laskar Jihad and Jemaah Islamiah — the latter group has been blamed for the 2002 Bali bombing and the September 9 bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta.
Munir had criticised BIN over its anti-democratic terrorism bill and colleagues say that at the time of his death he was investigating a corruption case involving Garuda.
Although Priyanto claims he was recruited by BIN in 2002, the first concrete evidence linking him with BIN was revealed on May 18 when the Fact Finding Team (TPF) established by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and tasked with assisting the police investigation revealed that Priyanto had been in phone contact with BIN.
TPF deputy head Asmara Nababan said Priyanto had called a BIN official via his mobile phone several times after Munir's death. "We reported to the president that Polly [Priyanto] had direct contact with someone in BIN", Nababan said. "It means there is a connection [between BIN and Priyanto], which BIN had previously denied. But, we must be cautious as we don't want to implicate BIN as an institution."
Nababan declined to identify the official but according to the Jakarta Post, sources close to the TPF have said they have phone company documents proving calls were made by Priyanto to BIN's "deputy five" between September and October.
Deputy five at that time was Major General Muchdi Purwopranjono, a former Kopassus commander who was sacked following Munir's investigation into the 1998 abductions. He was replaced as the deputy director of BIN in August and although police interviewed him on May 18 they have refused to disclose what they learned.
Priyanto also received calls from Purwopranjono's office over the September-October period. "At least five calls were made from that number to Pollycarpus' mobile phone", Nababan told reporters.
Yudhoyono has formally asked BIN to cooperate but its current director, Syamsir Siregar (who replaced Hendropriyono in October), has so far avoided questioning.
The May 28 Jakarta Post reported that BIN is refusing to provide the TPF with documents on former BIN agents allegedly implicated in the killing. "We need BIN's documents that show whether Pollycarpus was recruited by BIN in 2002 as he has repeatedly claimed. We also need to clarify whether his recruitment was in line with BIN's anti-terrorism policy", said TPF member Rachland Nashidik.
Former BIN secretary general Djazuli has testified to the TPF that Hendropriyono endorsed Priyanto's recruitment. Priyanto also named two other former high-ranking members of BIN who were suspected of knowing about Munir's murder — former BIN deputy chief overseeing the anti-terrorism desk, retired Major General Muchdi and former BIN agent Colonel Bambang Irawan.
The May 27 Jakarta Post reported that a source has said Bambang was the passenger who was seated in the same flight's business class and was believed to "have given a glass of drink mixed with poison to Munir".
"Questioning of the three men concerned and checking all related BIN documents are necessary to clarify all of Pollycarpus' statements", Nashidik said. "We have prepared summonses for the three and are expecting to question them by mid-June. But I'm worried that they are just trying to buy time", he added, pointing out that the TPF will end its six-month term on June 23.
One of the team's highest priorities is to question Hendropriyono. He was one of the Suharto dictatorship's most prominent thugs and was the Jakarta military commander in 1996 when the headquarters of Megawati Sukarnoputri's Indonesian Democratic Party was attacked by military-backed thugs. The attack resulted in the death of at least 50 people and sparked three days of mass rioting.
Ironically, Hendropriyono is now a close aide to Megawati and a member of her party.
Questioning Hendropriyono has not proved easy. For some time his whereabouts were unclear. Then, on May 30, Hendropriyono suddenly lodged a complaint with the police against the TPF saying it had tarnished his reputation by repeatedly connecting him with Munir's death.
Hendropriyono said the TPF had told the media he was in the US and was difficult to track down for questioning. He said he had in fact been in Indonesia since April.
He also lodged a complaint with the Indonesian parliament and is asking it to form a new team that can "work more effectively".
Hendropriyono has also tried to belittle the case by asking what was so special about Munir's death. At a May 30 press conference, Hendropriyono's lawyer, Sjamsu Djalal, said: "And I'm sorry to say this, but who's this Munir anyway that a presidential regulation had to be issued? A lot of people die, but no regulations are ever made [for them]."
When asked if he was willing to appear before the TPF, Hendropriyono remained elusive, saying he had yet to receive a summons. "Where's the summons letter? Send it to me. I don't answer hypothetical questions, such as [would I attend] if I received a summons."
At a press conference the following day, Nashidik told reporters that "the erroneous issue of [his] place of residency, in the United States, actually could have been resolved directly by explaining it to the chairperson of the TPF. [He] could have used the phone [and told us] that he is in Jakarta, not by measures which demonstrate a kind of excessive fear."
Following an interview with Hendropriyono aired on Metro TV on May 31 in which he accused the TPF of "lacking professionalism", human rights activists called on police to detain him for "attempts to avoid investigation".
At a press conference on June 1, Edwin Partogi from the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence questioned Hendropriyono's motives saying that while he claims to respect the legal process he is unwilling to give any information to the TPF.

He recently followed up with the book "The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions," a critique of the Kean commission document. "For the first year and a half I just accepted the conventional view. When a colleague suggested to me about a year after 9/11 that he was convinced our own government or forces within our own government had arranged it, I didn't accept that. Then several months later another colleague sent me [a link to] a website that had a timeline. Once I started reading that and saw all those stories drawn from mainstream sources that contradicted the official account, I decided I needed to look into it more carefully, and the more I looked, the worse it got. The fact that Building 7 [a 47-story skyscraper in the WTC complex] collapsed when it had not been hit by an airplane, and collapsed in seven or eight seconds, that's a smoking gun. The fact that standard operating procedures were not followed that morning, and we've gotten three different stories now by the U.S. military as to why they did not intercept the planes, that's a smoking gun. There was a Zogby poll in New York. The question asked was, do you believe the government had advance knowledge of the attacks and consciously let them happen? Forty-nine percent in New York City said yes.

Many people are convinced that George W. Michael Springman, the former head of the American visa bureau in Jeddah, has stated that since 1987 the CIA had been illicitly issuing visas to unqualified applicants from the Middle East and bringing them to the US for training in terrorism for the Afghan war in collaboration with Bin Laden (BBC, November 6 2001). It seems this operation continued after the Afghan war for other purposes. It is also reported that five of the hijackers received training at secure US military installations in the 1990s (Newsweek, September 15 2001) The conclusion of all this analysis must surely be that the "global war on terrorism" has the hallmarks of a political myth propagated to pave the way for a wholly different agenda - the US goal of world hegemony, built around securing by force command over the oil supplies required to drive the whole project.

The fact that Building 7 [a 47-story skyscraper in the WTC complex] collapsed when it had not been hit by an airplane, and collapsed in seven or eight seconds, that's a smoking gun. There was a Zogby poll in New York. The question asked was, do you believe the government had advance knowledge of the attacks and consciously let them happen? Forty-nine percent in New York City said yes.

Michael Springman, the former head of the American visa bureau in Jeddah, has stated that since 1987 the CIA had been illicitly issuing visas to unqualified applicants from the Middle East and bringing them to the US for training in terrorism for the Afghan war in collaboration with Bin Laden (BBC, November 6 2001). It seems this operation continued after the Afghan war for other purposes. It is also reported that five of the hijackers received training at secure US military installations in the 1990s (Newsweek, September 15 2001) The conclusion of all this analysis must surely be that the "global war on terrorism" has the hallmarks of a political myth propagated to pave the way for a wholly different agenda - the US goal of world hegemony, built around securing by force command over the oil supplies required to drive the whole project.

Mr Salmond said: "Labour's whole by-election plan is in tatters. Clearly this exceptional rush for the by-election is a piece of Labour chicanery. During his Hawaiian exile, Marcos declared that he had given Reagan $4 million in 1980 and $8 million in 1984.
Parry wrote, "Some witnesses who claim knowledge of alleged Reagan efforts to sabotage Carter's negotiations to free 52 U.S. hostages then held in Iran maintain that Marcos contributed some of the money used by Republicans to bribe key Iranian mullahs.
"Documentary evidence about the alleged Marcos-to-Reagan payoffs first surfaced after Marcos was ousted by a revolution in March 1986. As Marcos's fall neared, Reagan arranged for the dictator to be flown to Hawaii. Marcos's opponents then ransacked government files and found a Feb. 17, 1986, letter signed by a senior Marcos aide, Victor Nituda."
In the letter, according to Parry, Nituda warned Marcos that Reagan's emissary, Senator Paul Laxalt demanded that "sensitive files, including ones listing the 1980 transactions, be turned over to the US before Marcos could go to Hawaii."

"Nituda's letter specifically cited accounts set up for Reagan and his 1980 campaign manager (and later CIA Director) William Casey, and that Laxalt demanded 'all documents check-listed during his last visit or the deal for a Hawaiian exile is off.' Laxalt also demanded files regarding bank loans and donations made to General John Singlaub, who was raising money for the Nicaraguan contra rebels."
Perry wrote:
"A serious investigation of the Marcos money might shed light, too, on another perplexing mystery from the 1980s: the curious relationship between the American government and the corrupt Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI). In Jan. 22, 1981, two days after Reagan's inauguration, Marcos and his cronies co-founded a Hong Kong bank with New York financier John Shaheen, one of Casey's closest friends dating back to the World War II-era Office of Strategic Services.
"In 1983, the bank collapsed with reported losses of more than $100 million. The money was never recovered, but Shaheen associates claimed that prior to the bank failure, substantial amounts were funneled to Marcos, who reportedly was pulling the strings behind the scenes."

"According to Republican campaign strategist Ed Rollins, Ronald Reagan's 1984 re-election campaign may have received an illegal $10 million in cash from Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos. (Rollins suggested that the illegal contribution never reached the campaign or the president, but were stashed "in some offshore bank.")
"In a new report on the missing Marcos stash, investigative journalist Lucy Komisar reports that Marie-Gabrielle Koller, a former attorney with accounting firm KPMG in Zurich has come forward with evidence that 'on March 23, 1986—just a day before a freeze would be placed on Marcos' accounts—KPMG secretly transferred $400 million from Credit Suisse Zurich to a Liechtenstein trust on the ex-dictator's behalf."' Typical British soldiers?
It was 'gratuitous violence' meted out on a number of 'innocent and unarmed' civilians.

An 18-year-old was killed during an "unjustified" and "gratuitous" assault involving seven British soldiers, according to evidence given to a military court in Colchester, Essex.
Nadhem Abdullah was killed in Iraq in May 2003.
The attack took place three weeks after the "formal cessation" of the war, Martin Heslop QC told the court.
The soldiers entered the southern Iraqi village during a patrol and "brutally assaulted a number of unarmed Iraqi civilians, causing serious injuries from which one died", Mr Heslop said.
He added: "During the course of the incident, two women who tried to intervene were assaulted, one being pregnant at the time and the other having given birth two weeks before."
The soldiers had not been under attack, or defending themselves, Mr Heslop said.
"It was, I am afraid to say, nothing more than gratuitous violence meted out on a number of innocent and unarmed Iraqi civilians. These assaults were unjustified and wholly unprovoked."

The average duration of hurricanes has increased by 60% since 1949

1. Kerry Emanual, a professor of meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, in a paper in the science journal Nature, showed that the peak wind speed of hurricanes in the North Atlantic and North Pacific had increased by 50% since 1949.
Over the same period, the average duration of the hurricanes had increased by 60%.
Emanual suggested this was clearly linked to a rise in the average temperature at the surface of tropical oceans.
2. In July, the Benfield Hazard Research Centre at University College, London predicted that the Atlantic would be twice as stormy as usual. It forecast 15 tropical storms in the Atlantic basin including nine hurricanes, four of which would be very violent. Chillingly, the centre also predicted that two of the hurricanes would hit the US coastline.

Largest ever single release of carbon dioxide; it's in Indonesia.

David Adam, environment correspondent of the Guardian, 3 September 2005, tells us about the largest ever release of carbon dioxide and it's not from the USA. It's from Indonesia.
We are talking about up to 2.7bn tons of carbon dioxide, the largest single release since records began, and equivalent of up to 40% of annual global emissions from burning fossil fuels.
How did this happen?
Indonesia's government has tried to turn Borneo's (Kalimantan's) peat swamps into rice plantations. This means annual fires.
Susan Page, a geography researcher at the University of Leicester, says that annual fires caused by peatland drainage 'were releasing enough carbon dioxide to swamp worldwide reductions in greenhouse gas emissions agreed under the Kyoto protocol'.
She called for international action to reflood the peat swamps in Central Kalimantan province, which were drained by the dictator General Suharto in the mid 1990s and now catch fire each dry season.
Fires in the region in 1997 released up to 2.7bn tons of carbon dioxide, the largest single release since records began in 1957, and equivalent of up to 40% of annual global emissions from burning fossil fuels, Dr Page told the Royal Geographical Society's meeting in London.
She said: "Tropical peatlands are vast stores of carbon that have accumulated over thousands of years. In a matter of months, peatland fires can liberate 1,000-2,000 years' worth of carbon.
"The situation can only get worse. We need to stop the fires, and the best way is to re-wet the landscape."
At the current rate of burning, the peat swamp's entire carbon stocks, built up over 27,000 years from forest litter too wet to rot, will be released into the atmosphere by 2040.
Dr Page said the environmental problems caused by the massive smoke clouds each year had got international attention, but the scale of the carbon emissions had not.
Many of the fires are started deliberately by locals to clear land for agriculture, but they spread rapidly out of control.
The swamp drainage also threatens the survival of Borneo's estimated 7,000 orangutans, the largest single population in the world.
Suharto's project, called Mega Rice, was to convert more than a million hectares of peat swamp into rice fields.
Barely a grain was ever produced. The uneven ground made irrigation impossible and the soil proved too acidic, as the few local experts willing to speak out against Suharto's plan had predicted.
Dr Page said: "People just don't understand peatlands and don't understand wetlands, as we've seen with the situation in New Orleans. People have a misguided impression of our abilities to manipulate natural ecosystems."

Dr Mohammed Naseem, chairman of Birmingham Central mosque, said it could have been doctored.
He called for an independent inquiry to establish whether the bombers were Muslims, saying the situation was "not clear".
He said: "We are in the 21st Century. The cows can be made to look as dancing, the horses can speak like humans, so these things can be doctored or can be produced."
Friends of Khan told BBC News it showed him looking significantly different than he did immediately before 7 July.

Khan is working for the security services?

Mohammed Sidique Khan is alleged to be one of the July 7 London bombers.
According to newspaper reports, Khan may have been 'arrested' in 2004 and then released.
Now al Jazeera has broadcast a video which claims to show Khan.

There were reports of a bomb plot in Britain in 2004. Names linked to the plot have included Mohammed SidiqueKhan and Haroon Aswat.
Newsweek said Aswat was linked to the seizure of 590kg of ammonium nitrate fertiliser in Britain, which authorities believed was to be used to make bombs.
The French daily Libération reported that Khan had been one of the targets of a police operation in 2004.
Nicholas Sarkozy, the French interior minister, claimed that "a part of the team" behind the London blasts had been the subject of a counter-terrorism operation in 2004.
That remark appears to refer to Operation Crevice, a string of raids in 31 March 2004 that led to several men being arrested and charged under the Terrorism Act 2000.

The police have recently declared that they are NOT investigating Aswat in connection with the London bombings.
