What if the people behind the recent terror think that they are doing the right thing?
The 'Utilitarians' believe that governments should try to bring about the greatest happiness of the greatest number. But, are the Utilitarians forgetting about justice?
Bentham and Mill, the philosophers who advocated 'Utilitarianism', no doubt had good intentions. They were thinking about the happiness of all the world's citizens.
But, what about the planners in the Pentagon? Are they thinking only about the greatest happiness of the greatest number of rich and powerful Americans?
Was Hitler only thinking about healthy, fair-haired Germans? Did Truman have no concern for the women of Hiroshima?
Sociologist Alan Wolfe asks: "Why do capitalism and liberal democracy, both of which justify themselves on the grounds that they produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number, leave so much dissatisfaction in their wake?"
Could it be that western governments forget about justice?
Sir Ian Blair has urged the public not to let the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes overshadow the deaths of 52 victims of the London bombers.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner told BBC Radio 4: "We can't let that one tragic death outweigh all others."

Let's pretend, he said, that some mad scientist has figured out a way to bring peace, prosperity, and general happiness to the whole world.
There was just one catch: this brave new world required the yearly sacrifice of one innocent person, chosen at random. Supposing this scheme were perfected: would it be moral to close with the offer and subscribe universal happiness at the cost of one innocent life per annum?
Well, why not?
Think of all the billions of people there are in the world. Scads of innocent people die all the time. Why not spread happiness and reduce the death toll at the same time? Hard cheese on the appointed victim, of course. But he (or she) would at least have the consolation of dying for the good of society.
This is the sort of argument you might get from Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), the father of utilitarianism. Utilitarianism defines the good as the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Utilitarianism, especially in its undoctrinaire forms, has a lot of appeal. Most of us are at least intermittent utilitarians. At least, we expect those running society to act on broadly utilitarian principles, to "maximize" goods and services (read "happiness") for as many people as possible.
It is interesting, then, that everyone to whom I have presented my friend's thought-experiment has recoiled. Some people say, "That's just silly," and change the subject. Some say, "What a horrible idea," and change the subject. Hardly anyone says "That would be wrong because . . ." and then supplies a reason.
I think that the uneasiness that most people feel about this utilitarian fantasy is a good thing. I also think that the reluctance on the part of most people to provide a reason for their uneasiness is troubling. For one thing, it suggests that for many people, moral intuitions are unsupported by articulate moral principles. It also suggests that, acting more or less like utilitarians in our daily lives, we are poorly equipped to challenge utilitarian proposals when they go too far.
What's wrong with the utilitarian philosophy?
As its name implies, utilitarianism aims to be a useful, a practical philosophy. But the German philosopher Gotthold Lessing (1729-1781), musing about utilitarianism, was on to something important when he asked "What is the use of use?" Lessing understood that the idea of usefulness ultimately makes sense only when it is underwritten by some definite idea of the good.
When we set about the practical tasks of everyday, this question generally does not have much urgency because we know pretty well what good we are aiming at. But when we step back to ponder larger moral issues, the question of the ultimate good for human life suddenly snaps into the foreground.
Grammar may be of some help in clarifying what Lessing had in mind. There is much that we do in life that takes place under the aegis of "the in order to." We exercise in order to stay healthy, we go to the bank in order to withdraw money, we go to the airport in order to travel somewhere. But there is also much in life that we do not do in order to achieve a specific end but for the sake of some good.
The distinction between the "in order to" and the "for the sake of" is a distinction between the calculation of means and the acknowledgment of an ideal. One important human ideal is freedom. A central reason that the utilitarian fantasy with which we began is morally repugnant is because it requires the violation of freedom.
It therefore builds a fatal weakness into its very foundation. The utilitarian promise works to the extent that we understand ourselves as creatures who behave in order to achieve certain ends. To the extent that we see our selves as moral creatures - creatures, that is to say, whose lives are bounded by an ideal of freedom - utilitarianism presents itself as a version of nihilism. "What is the use of use?" That is one question the thoroughgoing utilitarian refuses to ask himself. Entertained in earnest, that question reveals the limits of utilitarianism. The reliability of a key witness, Alan Feraday, has been called into question.
In three separate cases men against whom Mr Feraday gave evidence have now had their convictions overturned.
After the first case, which took place seven years before the Lockerbie trial, the Lord Chief Justice said Mr Feraday should not be allowed to present himself as an expert in the field of electronics.
The latest case to be quashed happened just last month.
Papers about Mr Feraday's evidence have now been sent to the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission, which was investigating Megrahi's conviction.
During the trial, Mr Feraday, who is now said to have retired after 42 years experience in explosives, told the judges that he was in no doubt that a circuit board fragment found after the disaster was part of the detonator. The trial judges accepted his conclusion.
Dr Jim Swire, who led the campaign for justice after losing his daughter Flora in the bombing, said the revelation "undermines one's confidence" in Megrahi's life sentence.
He said: "I'm personally not satisfied of Mr Megrahi's guilt.
"I emerged [from the trial] riddled with doubts.
"This will of course augment them."
He added: "If one finds that three cases have been overturned, it rather undermines one's confidence."

UK criminal justice system - very incompetent or very corrupt?

In the United Kingdom, the criminal justice system appears to very incompetent or very corrupt or both.
1. Are the criminals being caught and dealt with?
According to Nick Davies in the Guardian, on 17 August 2005, "the system is bringing justice in only 3% of offences committed."

In other words, the vast majority of criminals are getting away with it.
The few that do get dealt with are often the inadequate losers.
2. Are the courts efficient?
According to Davies, in the Guardian, "courts continue to experience delays."
24% of prisoners are not delivered to court on time;
52% of civilian witnesses come to court and do not give evidence;
64% of prosecution witnesses come to court and do not give evidence.
Files of evidence provided by police to prosecutors are on time and up to quality in only 43% of cases;
and the preparation by prosecutors is effective in only 60% of cases.
3. What happens to those who are found guilty?
According to Davies:
Forty-four per cent of fines are unpaid;
up to 40% of community punishments are unserved.

The British Newspaper "The Telegraph" reported that it was in possession of a confidential document containing the minutes of a meeting organized by the National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS).
In attendance were "10 of Britain's most senior officers and policy makers."
The document states that "corrupt officers exist throughout the UK police service" and that the NCIS' intelligence director indicated during the meeting that "Corruption may have reached 'Level 2', the situation which occurs in some third world countries."
The document blames the drug trade and the vast amounts of cash inherent in the black market for the enormous level of corruption. It states, in part that "The enormous volume of money that is available to... drug importers and dealers means that very large sums can be offered to corrupt officers. Criminals are willing to pay to ensure their ability to operate."

The UK's Independent Television News (ITV News) has obtained documents and photos from the 'independent' investigation into the killing by the police of Jean Charles de Menezes on 22 July 2005.
The documents contradict the police version of events.
Reportedly, Mr de Menezes' only connection with the failed London bombers was that he lived in the same block of flats.
According to the documents and photos obtained by ITV:
1. De Menezes "behaved normally" when he entered Stockwell Tube station - contradicting rumours that he had bolted from police officers. De Menezes walked calmly through the barriers at Stockwell station, using his Oyster card, and paused to pick up a free newspaper. The police had stated that he vaulted the barrier.
2. The CCTV footage confirmed Mr de Menezes was not wearing a large padded winter-style coat , something that police had initially announced.
The police claimed that the CCTV system at Stockwell Station was out of order. In fact, it was in perfect working order and filmed Mr. De Menezez as he entered the station
3. De Menezes seemed completely unaware he was being tailed.
4. De menezes entered the carriage of the underground train and sat in an available seat.
5. De Menezes was shot as he sat restrained in his seat.
Note that no attempt was made to detain him, or speak to him, before he got to the station. The killers seemed to want to make sure that the killing was done on the train.

Did elements of the security services hope to fool the public into thinking that the person who was shot was one of the 'bombers' such as Hussain Osman - arrested in Rome .
Hussein Osman, who also uses the name Hamdi Isaac, moved to Rome by Eurostar five days after the 21 July attacks in London. His passport was not checked by the British at Waterloo.

Operation Gladio and the 'strategy of tension' in Italy beginning in 1969.
Operation Gladio was organised by 'fascists' within the security services of the West. Reportedly, the idea was to kill innocent people and then blame this on others.
Gladio was about keeping the right-wing elite in power.
Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra stated, in sworn testimony:
'You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force ... the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security."
Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti revealed the existence of Gladio in 1991.
Parliamentary investigations in Italy, Switzerland and Belgium have given us a little of the truth.
The book "NATO's Secret Armies: Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe," by Daniele Ganser documents some of what we know so far.
Run by fascist elements in NATO and Washington, right-wing militias carried out acts of terrorism and electoral subversion in states such as Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and West Germany.

85 people were killed on August 2, 1980 in the bombing of the Bologna train station.

The Bologna bomb was part of Gladio's " strategy of tension" - fomenting fear to keep populations in thrall to "strong leaders" who will protect the nation from the ever-present terrorist threat.

The UK's Independent Television News (ITV News) has obtained documents and photos from the 'independent' investigation into the killing by the police of Jean Charles de Menezes on 22 July 2005.
The documents contradict the police version of events.
Reportedly, Mr de Menezes' only connection with the failed London bombers was that he lived in the same block of flats.
According to the documents and photos obtained by ITV:
1. De Menezes "behaved normally" when he entered Stockwell Tube station - contradicting rumours that he had bolted from police officers. De Menezes walked calmly through the barriers at Stockwell station, using his Oyster card, and paused to pick up a free newspaper. The police had stated that he vaulted the barrier.
2. The CCTV footage confirmed Mr de Menezes was not wearing a large padded winter-style coat , something that police had initially announced.
The police claimed that the CCTV system at Stockwell Station was out of order. In fact, it was in perfect working order and filmed Mr. De Menezez as he entered the station
3. De Menezes seemed completely unaware he was being tailed.
4. De menezes entered the carriage of the underground train and sat in an available seat.
5. De Menezes was shot as he sat restrained in his seat.
Note that no attempt was made to detain him, or speak to him, before he got to the station. The killers seemed to want to make sure that the killing was done on the train.

Hussein Osman, who also uses the name Hamdi Isaac, moved to Rome by Eurostar five days after the 21 July attacks in London. His passport was not checked by the British at Waterloo.

Operation Gladio was organised by 'fascists' within the security services of the West. Reportedly, the idea was to kill innocent people and then blame this on others.
Gladio was about keeping the right-wing elite in power.
Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra stated, in sworn testimony:
'You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force ... the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security."
Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti revealed the existence of Gladio in 1991.
Parliamentary investigations in Italy, Switzerland and Belgium have given us a little of the truth.
The book "NATO's Secret Armies: Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe," by Daniele Ganser documents some of what we know so far.
Run by fascist elements in NATO and Washington, right-wing militias carried out acts of terrorism and electoral subversion in states such as Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and West Germany.

A Pentagon document, Field Manual FM 30-31B, details the methods for launching terrorist attacks.
85 people were killed on August 2, 1980 in the bombing of the Bologna train station.
According to the Italian Senate, after its investigation in 2000, the bombers were later discovered to be "men inside Italian state institutions and ... men linked to the structures of United States intelligence."
The Bologna bomb was part of Gladio's " strategy of tension" - fomenting fear to keep populations in thrall to "strong leaders" who will protect the nation from the ever-present terrorist threat.

According to an article in the Bolivian newspaper, El Deber, a U.S. base is being developed in Mariscal Estigarribia, Paraguay, 200 kilometers from the border with Bolivia.

David Lange has died of kidney failure aged 63.
He was prime minister of the fourth Labour government from 1984 to 1989.
He promoted the idea of New Zealand having a nuclear-free policy.
This led to a 'coolness' in the relationship with the United States.
New Zealand has remained nuclear free.
In 2002, Lange was diagnosed with amyloidosis, a rare, incurable blood plasma disorder

It creates an incident, often attacking its own soldiers or burning down a village or two, blames it on the rebels and then insists it must “secure the area”, and, of course, any revenue arising from the area.
The army is already building up civilian militias close to the gas field. Some of them are controlled by Laskar Jihad, which is affiliated to Al Qaeda.

Nearly all of these migrants were Muslims, coming into an area that, prior to Indonesian rule, had been almost entirely populated by Roman Catholics, Protestants and people following tribal religions.

There has been a specific and concerted effort by the Indonesian military to increase dramatically national and racial tensions.
This has all the appearances of a disaster in waiting and we cannot simply allow it to happen.
During a situation like this, the allegations regarding a pro-Jakarta lobby within the Australian Intelligence services and concern over intelligence warnings prior to the East Timor massacre are deeply disturbing.
We must not allow another East Timor to develop on our doorstep.
We have the advance warning, there will be no excuse if this is allowed to happen.

Pentagon devising scenarios for martial law in US

Patrick Martin, on 9 August 2005, relates that the Pentagon is devising scenarios for martial law in the US.
The Washington Post, on 8 August 2005, reported that the Pentagon has developed its first ever war plans for operations within the continental United States, in which terrorist attacks would be used as the justification for imposing martial law on cities, regions or the entire country.
The Washinton Post's sources reportedly work at the headquarters of the military’s Northern Command (Northcom), located in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
According to the Washington post, “officers who drafted the plans” gave details to Post reporter Bradley Graham, who was recently given a tour of Northcom headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base.
According to Patrick Martin at WSWS, the article appears to be a deliberate leak which has the aim of accustoming the American population to the prospect of military rule.
According to Graham in the Washington Post, “the new plans provide for what several senior officers acknowledged is the likelihood that the military will have to take charge in some situations, especially when dealing with mass-casualty attacks that could quickly overwhelm civilian resources.”
The Post states, “The war plans represent a historic shift for the Pentagon, which has been reluctant to become involved in domestic operations and is legally constrained from engaging in law enforcement.”
15 scenarios are outlined, ranging from “low-end,” which Graham describes as “relatively modest crowd-control missions,” to “high-end,” after as many as three simultaneous catastrophic mass-casualty events, such as a nuclear, biological or chemical weapons attack.
The Post quotes Admiral Timothy J. Keating, head of Northcom who stated: “In my estimation, (in the event of) a biological, a chemical or nuclear attack in any of the 50 states, the Department of Defense is best positioned—of the various eight federal agencies that would be involved—to take the lead.”
The Washington Post explains that a document called CONPLAN 2002 is about “prevention and deterrence actions aimed at intercepting threats before they reach the United States.”
CONPLAN 0500, details the 15 scenarios mentioned above. It is still undergoing final drafting” at Northcom headquarters.
Northcom was set up only in October 2002.
About 1,400 National Guard troops formed a dozen regional response units. Smaller quick-reaction forces have been set up in each of the 50 states. Northcom can mobilize four active-duty Army battalions, as well as Navy and Coast Guard ships and air defense fighter jets.
Congress prohibits the use of the military for domestic policing. But the National Guard is allowed to round people up.

According to the BBC, 11 August 2005, a top Shia leader in Iraq, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, has called for the setting up of a Shia state for Iraq's Shias. This state would be an autonomous federal state in the south of the country.
Shia Muslims make up some 60% of Iraq's population.
Iraq's Kurds in the north already have de facto autonomy.
Shia religious leaders have long backed calls for the creation of a federalised Shia south.
Hakim's Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (Sciri) is important in Iraq.
"Along with the Dawa party, Sciri makes up most of the Shia majority in Iraq's parliament."
Iraq's Sunnis oppose Shia and Kurdish autonomy as this could leave the Sunnis without oil wealth.

Alleged meetings in Italy; Colonel Franklin

minutes of meetings held at the U.S. Embassy in Rome in 1995.
Attending the meetings were:
1. a "Colonel Franklin" from the United States
2. leading Italian neo-Fascist politicians
3. Likud officials from Israel.
The purpose of the meetings was to arrange telecom and military contracts for Israeli companies with the U.S. government.
There is a Colonel Lawrence (Larry) Franklin who has worked for the Pentagon Bureau of Near East and South Asian Affairs.
Lawrence (Larry) A. Franklin has been indicted for passing secrets to two American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) employees.
Franklin, who reportedly wants to attack Iran, reportedly attended a December 2001 meeting in Rome which was about contacts with Iranian dissidents.
Reportedly, other people who attended this meeting were:
1. neo-con Michael Ledeen of the American Enterprise Institute and Karl Rove's chief foreign policy advisor
2. Iran-contra figure Manucher Ghorbanifar
3. Italian SISMI military intelligence chief Nicolo Pollari
4. Italian Defense Minister Antonio Martino
5. a number of Iranian dissidents.
Another Italian criminal probe is looking at campaign contributions made by wealthy Italians and Italian-Americans to the Bush 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns.

The 9 11 Commission and David Ray Griffin

David Ray Griffin wrote The New Pearl Harbor and The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions.
Griffin points out:
1. At least six of the alleged hijackers are still alive. David Harrison of the Telegraph interviewed two of the men who supposedly died on Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, one of whom said that he "had never even heard of Pennsylvania," let alone died there. The Associated Press reported that Waleed al-Shehri, supposedly on Flight 11, contacted the U.S. embassy in Morocco about two weeks after 9/11. The 9/11 Commission Report, nevertheless, suggested that al-Shehri was responsible for stabbing one of the flight attendants shortly before Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower.
2. Although Mohamed Atta, the supposed ringleader, had been portrayed as a devout Muslim ready to meet his maker, he actually loved alcohol, pork, and lap dances. The 9 11 commission, however, said that Atta had become "fanatically" religious.They also claimed that they could find no credible explanation as to why Atta and the other hijackers went to Las Vegas. The mainstream press has let the Commission get away with these obvious contradictions.
3. President Bush was in a classroom in Sarasota when he was told that a second plane had struck the World Trade Center, a sign that the country was suffering an unprecedented terrorist attack. And yet the president just sat there. He remained at the school for another half hour. Bush's location had been highly publicized.
4. How did the hijackers, by crashing planes into the Twin Towers, cause them and Building 7 to collapse. Building 7 was not struck by an airplane, and steel-frame buildings had never before been caused to collapse by fire alone, even when the fires had been much bigger, hotter, and longer-lasting. The Commission avoided this problem by simply not mentioning this fact or even, incredibly, that Building 7 collapsed.
The collapses had all the standard features of controlled demolitions. For example, all three buildings came down at virtually free-fall speed. Controlled demolition was also suggested by the fact that the collapses were total, with the 110-story Twin Towers collapsing into a pile of rubble only a few stories high.
Many survivors of the towers have reported hearing and feeling explosions. But the 9/11 Commission failed to mention any of these reports. Griffin points out:
1. At least six of the alleged hijackers are still alive. David Harrison of the Telegraph interviewed two of the men who supposedly died on Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, one of whom said that he "had never even heard of Pennsylvania," let alone died there. The Associated Press reported that Waleed al-Shehri, supposedly on Flight 11, contacted the U.S. embassy in Morocco about two weeks after 9/11. The 9/11 Commission Report, nevertheless, suggested that al-Shehri was responsible for stabbing one of the flight attendants shortly before Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower.
2. Although Mohamed Atta, the supposed ringleader, had been portrayed as a devout Muslim ready to meet his maker, he actually loved alcohol, pork, and lap dances. The 9 11 commission, however, said that Atta had become "fanatically" religious.They also claimed that they could find no credible explanation as to why Atta and the other hijackers went to Las Vegas. The mainstream press has let the Commission get away with these obvious contradictions.
3. President Bush was in a classroom in Sarasota when he was told that a second plane had struck the World Trade Center, a sign that the country was suffering an unprecedented terrorist attack. And yet the president just sat there. He remained at the school for another half hour. Bush's location had been highly publicized.
4. How did the hijackers, by crashing planes into the Twin Towers, cause them and Building 7 to collapse. Building 7 was not struck by an airplane, and steel-frame buildings had never before been caused to collapse by fire alone, even when the fires had been much bigger, hotter, and longer-lasting. The Commission avoided this problem by simply not mentioning this fact or even, incredibly, that Building 7 collapsed.
The collapses had all the standard features of controlled demolitions. For example, all three buildings came down at virtually free-fall speed. Controlled demolition was also suggested by the fact that the collapses were total, with the 110-story Twin Towers collapsing into a pile of rubble only a few stories high.

The revelations emanated from sources close to the grand jury who spoke with federal whistleblower Thomas Heneghen in California who said White House Senior Advisor to the President Karl Rove was also indicted for perjury and was reportedly involved with Mary Matalin in a major Bush administration document shredding operation to cover-up evidence.
Heneghen had reported over ten days ago on a TruthRadio.com broadcast that his sources close to the grand jury said former Secretary of State Colin Powell had been subpoenaed and had testified against President Bush, telling the citizen panel that the President had taken the United States to war based upon lies - a capital crime involving treason under the United States Code.
Heneghen also reported a week ago that Gonzalez and Card had been subpoened and that Tony Blair had defied his subpoena after the response time limit had expired.
Sources close to the investigation report that members of the House, Senate, 9.11 Commission and other members of the media are also under investigation as potential targets by a grand jury regarding obstruction of justice and other oversight failures linked to the 9.11 attacks -indicating that citizen panelists working with Fitzgerald may be seeking a wholesale cleansing of what many have said is a crime-wracked White House and Congress.
Also last Monday, the whistleblower reported that Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts was planning to obstruct justice by calling Fitzgerald for Senate hearings to question the prosecutor's motives for the far-reaching investigation.
This, giving rise to questions as to whether Roberts and other Republican legislators - some now under secret investigation - had fired Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox in order to obstruct justice and cut off further investigations into White House crimes.
Two weeks ago Heneghen said he had talked to sources just ten minutes prior to French and U.S. intelligence agents intercepting British intelligence agents who were attempting to bomb the subway underneath the Dirksen Federal Building where Fitzgerald was presiding over grand jury hearings.
Serious questions can also be raised as to whether intelligence forces linked to President Bush and Tony Blair had participated in a failed attempt to scuttle the Fitzgerald probe by literally blowing it up - at a time when UK reports reveal that military-grade explosives were used to blow up the London subway on July 7.
Sources say the alleged Chicago subway bombing attempt has been attributed to an underground and closeted enmity involving warring intelligence and military factions within the United States government.
Moreover, reports indicate that the disturbance occurred at the same time that the Chicago Tribune and local web blogs had reported that the subway had been evacuated for 45-50 minutes regarding a "suspicious package" late on Monday afternoon, July 18.

Indonesia: in the 2004 elections the two parties that came top, Golkar and PDI, are secular parties.
Pakistan: normally the extremists get less than 6% of the vote. In 2002: Musharraf stayed in power. The increase in support for the anti-American Islamic groups in two provinces next to Afghanistan was probably due to the fact that Musharraf has supported Bush over Iraq.
