Australia to return to East Timor?
Australian PM John Howard, on 12 May 2006, ruled out Australian involvement in any military action in Iran.
Howard also announced a military build-up for a possible new occupation of East Timor.
The East Timor government has not asked for help from the Australian military.
There are reports of troops, armour and naval units assembling in Darwin.
In East Timor, about one third of the East Timorese army recently resigned.
The East Timor government is close to a settlement with the disaffected troops.
Iranian president Ahmadinejahad recently made visit to Indonesia.
The Sydney Morning Herald on 15 May quoted un-named "senior sources" as saying Howard, while in Washington, "did not expect to be asked by the Americans to increase Australia’s troop commitment" to Iraq or Afghanistan.

The Renault Megane car advert has wiggling bottoms. It was banned from daytime and early evening TV because young children were copying it.
The bottoms were rotated in time to a tune which repeated the line "shakin’ that ass".
The Independent Television Commission said the advert had "sexual connotations" for some viewers.

Odd things about the UK government narrative of the 7/7 London Bombs
De Menezes, who was shot on a London tube train, was a dangerous terrorist?
Eventually some brave journalists revealed that the UK government officials had lied. De Menezes was an innocent Brazilian.
The UK government story about the 7/7 London bombs has kept on changing and still does not make sense.
The UK government has produced a brief 'narrative' of the 7/7 London Bomb attacks.
Originally we were led to believe that Shehzad Tanweer had met senior Islamic militants in Pakistan prior to 7/7, and that Mohammad Siddique Khan had visited Malaysia to meet al-Qaeda operatives.
Now, the UK government 'narrative' states that 'there is no reliable intelligence or corroborative information to support (these claims)'
Khan and Tanweer did visit Pakistan, but it is still unclear whom they met there and why.
Back in August 2005, one expert said that 'People like that aren't generally capable of building bombs.' The suggestion was that al-Qaeda masterminds were involved.
Now the UK government narrative claims that the four alleged bombers did make their own bombs, in the living room of a flat on Alexandra Grove in Leeds.
The flat had been rented from an Egyptian chemistry student. At one time the media suggested that this Egyptian was the mastermind of the bombings. The UK government then made it clear that the Egyptian was not involved in 7/7.
Otiginally we were told that the explosives were C4, used by the military.
The UK government narrative says that the four alleged bombers attended three different mosques irregularly, and that most of their meetings took place in a local gym or during outdoor activities.
The narrative states: 'Camping, canoeing, white-water rafting, paintballing and other outward bound-type activities are of particular interest because they appear common factors for the 7 July bombers and other cells disrupted previously and since.'
What were alleged bombers like?
According to the narrative: Khan was a 'role model' to young people; Tanweer was 'mature, modest and balanced'.
A video claiming to show Khan, viewed on al-Jazeera a few months after 7/7, does not directly mention Iraq.
Khan spoke about how 'your democratically elected governments continuously perpetuate atrocities against my people all over the world'.
The video must be fake. If Khan was really a bomber he would have mentioned Iraq, and Palestine! And he would not have praised our governments as being democratic.

Is Khalid Shaikh Mohammed living in a luxurious safe house?
Who is being held at Guantanamo?
The first full list of prisoners has now been handed over by the Pentagon, but none of the top al-Qaeda leaders are on the list.

7 July London bombs, Gladio and freemasons
"Links between Gladio, Italian secret service bosses and the notorious P2 masonic lodge are manifold. The chiefs of all three secret services - Generals Santovito (SISMI), Grassini (SISDE) and Cellosi (CESSIS) - were members of the lodge." - The Guardian, 5 12 1990.
~~~~
Have top policemen and politicians and journalists been keeping quiet about the real reasons for the London Bombs? Are these top people all freemasons?
Was there, in the fairly recent past, a secret organisation carrying out acts of terror in Europe?
P2.
P2 was a fascist Masonic Lodge. Its members were the top military officers, political leaders, industrialists, bankers and diplomats in Italy. P2 was a government within the government.
P-2 had an Israeli connection.
The July 1981 issue of The Middle East International Journal stated that the P-2 had close links with Israel and Mossad.
Top people who allegedly had contact with P-2 include Henry Kissinger, Edmond de Rothschild, and David Rockefeller.
In 'The Pope, The Mafia and Agca', Ugur Mumcu, a Turkish journalist wrote:"Henry Kissinger is a member of the Monte Carlo lodge, which is the P-2's 'board of directors,' also known as the Monte Carlo Committee. All the members of this lodge are Grand Masters and Masons of the 33rd degree."
Ex-Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky in 'The Other Side of Deception',1994, wrote that Licio Gelli, P-2's Grand Master, was the ally of Mossad in Italy and that Gelli also had a close relationship with the Gladio group. According to Ostrovsky, Mossad used this Gelli-Gladio alliance for its arms dealings with Italy in the 1980s.
From The Guardian, 5 December 1990:
Secret agents, freemasons, fascists... and a top-level campaign of political 'destabilisation'
Ed Vulliamy in Rome on the 'strategy of tension' that brought carnage and cover-up.
'I CAN say that the head of the secret services has repeatedly and unequivocally excluded the existence of a hidden organisation of any type or size," the Italian Minister of Defence, Giulio Andreotti, told a judicial inquiry in 1974 into the alleged existence of a secret state army.
Four years later, the scene repeated itself in front of judges investigating a fascist bombing in Milan.
Last month, however, Andreotti - now Prime Minister - confirmed the now infamous Gladio organisation had indeed existed since 1958, with the sanction of the political authorities, as a paramilitary "clandestine network"....
The Gladio saga resulted from two sources unhappy with Andreotti's 1974 explanation. The first was a group of judges examining letters uncovered in Milan during October in which the murdered Christian Democrat leader, Aldo Moro, said he feared a shadow organisation, alongside "other secret services of the West ... might be implicated in the destabilisation of our country".
His words were taken to point to the "Strategy of Tension" in the 1970s, violent and usually fascist-inspired outrages designed to justify increased state power and isolate the Left.
Meanwhile, two judges in Venice were investigating one such outrage - the murder of three policemen by a fascist car bomb in Peteano in 1972. Felice Casson and Carlo Mastelloni had stumbled across Gladio.
Testimonies collected by the two men and by the Commission on Terrorism in Rome, and inquiries by the Guardian, indicate Gladio was involved in activities which do not square with Andreotti's account.
Links between Gladio, Italian secret service bosses and the notorious P2 masonic lodge are manifold. The chiefs of all three secret services - Generals Santovito (SISMI), Grassini (SISDE) and Cellosi (CESSIS) - were members of the lodge. In the year that Andreotti denied Gladio's existence, the P2 treasurer, General Siro Rosetti, gave a generous account of "a secret security structure made up of civilians, parallel to the armed forces".
There are also overlaps between senior Gladio personnel and the committee of military men, Rosa dei Vent, which tried to stage a coup in 1970.
A briefing minute of June 1, 1959, reveals Gladio was built around "internal subversion". It was to play "a determining role...not only on the general policy level of warfare, but also in the politics of emergency"...
The idea is now emerging of a Gladio web made up of semi-autonomous cadres which - although answerable to their secret service masters and ultimately to the Nato-CIA command - could initiate what they regarded as anti-communist operations by themselves, needing only sanction and funds from the existing "official" Gladio column.
General Pietro Corona, head of the "R" office from 1969-70, told the Venice inquiry about "an alternative clandestine network, parallel to Gladio, which knew about the arms and explosives dumps and who had access to them". General Nino Lugarese, head of SISMI from 1981-84 testified on the existence of a "Super Gladio" of 800 men responsible for "internal intervention" against domestic political targets.
The Venetian judges identifed two arms dumps referred to by Andreotti. One, hidden beneath a cemetery near Verona, contains 18 453-gram bundles of the potent C4 plastic explosive officially confirmed last week as used at Peteano.
Gen Serravalle testified to irregularities at another dump, near Trieste. There, he says, Gladio had logged seven containers of C4. When the Carabinieri dug up the arsenal in February 1972 - two months before the Peteano attack near by - there were only four containers left; three had been inexplicably removed.
An extraordinary testimony remains in the labyrinth of paperwork surrounding the "Strategy of Tension", Vincenzo Vinciguerra, a member of the fascist group Avanguardia Nazionale, is serving life for his part in the Peteano bombing.
In 1984, questioned by Judges examining the 1980 Bologna station bomb in which 82 people were killed and for which two secret service agents were convicted, he said: "With the massacre of Peteano, and with all those that have followed, the knowledge should by now be clear that there existed a real live structure, occult and hidden, with the capacity of giving a strategic direction to the outrages." The structure, he said, "lies within the state itself".
"There exists in Italy a secret force parallel to the armed forces, composed of civilians and military men... A secret organisation, a super-organisation with a network of communications, arms and explosives, and men trained to use them"...
Vinciguerra has now made this statement to the Guardian: "The terrorist line was followed by camouflaged people, people belonging to the security apparatus, or those linked to the state apparatus through rapport or collaboration. I say that every single outrage that followed from 1969 fitted into a single, organised matrix... Avanguardia Nazionale, like Ordine Nuovo (the main right-wing terrorist group active during the 1970s), were being mobilised ... from within the state itself, and specifically from within the ambit of the state's relations within the Atlantic Alliance."
Google adverts
In April 2006, Google reported its first-quarter profits were up 60 per cent from a year ago to $592 million (£332 million), thanks to surging online advertising revenues.
Google reported a 79 per cent jump in online advertising.
~
Results for our blogs for Saturday 13 May 2006:
Page impressions 523 (Good for a Saturday)
Clicks 7 (This looks good and is the sort of number one would expect.)
Earnings US $ 0.23 (This is not a lot of money. What does a small local newspaper charge for its adverts?)
Hardly worth having adverts on blogs?
The adverts waste a lot of space?
Our blogs attract some of the most intelligent and wealthy people on the planet. Surely the adverts should make more money for the bloggers?
If bloggers begin to think that adverts are a waste of space, what happens to Google profits?
Tamil Tigers and drugs, the Kurds and drugs, bin Laden's alleged visit to MI6
~
1. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tamil Tigers
Source: Cached
On 4 September 2000, B. Raman, Director of India's Institute for Topical Studies wrote an open letter to the U.S. Congress about the Pakistan government's alleged involvement in the drug trade.
"Lt. Gen. Nasir... during his tenure as the DG (Director General) of the ISI (Pakistan's CIA)… has entered into an agreement with the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) of Sri Lanka (which secured) LTTE's assistance in smuggling Afghanistan produced heroin in its ships to West Europe, the USA and Canada…"
"…A... reason for the ISI's helping the LTTE... was to use it for smuggling heroin to West Europe, the U.S. and Canada. During Zia-ul-Haq's regime in the 1980s, heroin had become a major source of extra revenue not only for the State of Pakistan, especially the ISI and Pakistan's nuclear and missile establishment, but also to many senior officers of the Pakistan Army, including [Musharraf et al]…"
2. Cyprus and Qatar
The newspaper Scotland on Sunday reported 16/9/ 2001 that bin Laden made his fortune in part by working with Jewish-Russian mafia operations in Qatar and Cyprus.
It has been alleged that Osama bin Laden's mother is Jewish.
3. The Caymen Islands
Source: Osama Bin Laden - A CIA Creation and It's Blowback
Michael Rupert has reported on possible links between Caymen banks and and bin Laden.
Deutsche Bank (allegedly one of the banks used by bin Laden and inside traders at the CIA) reportedly has an interest in Safron Partners, which is part of a corporate network on the Cayman Islands that is allegedly run by Bin Laden's half brother, Hassan.
Bin Laden and the CIA and a Mr Hekmatyar are reputed to have been involved in the Afghan heroin business.
Bin-Laden allegedly established branches of his business in the Cayman Islands; and he allegedly employed law firms and consultants connected to Langley, Virginia and the CIA.
Were the British interested?
The French Internet publication, Indigo, reported that bin-Laden was a guest of British Intelligence in London in 1996.
President Bush? One of his backers was James Bath, who was "the bin Laden family's representative in Texas." Bath allegedly managed millions of dollars for Khalid bin Mahfouz, one of the central figures in Bank BCCI, which was labeled as the bank for the Medellin drug cartel, Noriega, Saddam, Abu Nidal, and heroin godfather Khun Sa.
Mahfouz was apparently an investor in the Carlyle Group of which Bush senior was a director. In 1999 it was reported that bin Mahfouz was financing Osama bin Laden. Mahfouz has a palatial estate in Houston Texas.
James Bath was seemingly president of Skyway Aircraft leasing , a Texas company, owned by bin Mahfouz, and registered in the Cayman Islands.
4. The Kurds
Michael C. Ruppert refers to opium production in the Caucasus under the Kurds and smuggling through Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.
Rupert notes that both Vice President Richard Cheney and Richard Armitage are members of the US-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce.
5. The Balkans, Chechnya
Economics Professor Michel Chossudovsky of the University of Ottawa has an article entitled Who Is Osama Bin Laden? Sept 12, 2001.
http://globalresearch.ca/articles/CHO109C.html.
Chossudovsky writes:
"[Professor] Alfred McCoy's study confirms that within two years of the onslaught of the CIA operation in Afghanistan, 'the Pakistan-Afghanistan borderlands became the world's top heroin producer, supplying 60 per sent of the U.S. demand…
"The CIA continued to support the Islamic "jihad" out of Pakistan…
"The Golden Crescent drug trade was also being used to finance and equip the Bosnian Muslim Army (starting in the early 1990s) and the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). (There have been reports that bin Laden's Mujhideen mercenaries fought in the ranks of the KLA-NLA)
"With regard to Chechnya, the main rebel leaders Shamil Basayev and Al Khattab were trained and indoctrinated in CIA sponsored camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan… In this regard, the involvement of Pakistan's ISI and its radical Islamic proxies are actually calling the shots in this war..."
On 4 September 2000, B. Raman, Director of India's Institute for Topical Studies wrote an open letter to the U.S. Congress about the Pakistan government's alleged involvement in the drug trade.
"Lt. Gen. Nasir... during his tenure as the DG (Director General) of the ISI (Pakistan's CIA)… has entered into an agreement with the LTTE (Tamil Tigers) of Sri Lanka (which secured) LTTE's assistance in smuggling Afghanistan produced heroin in its ships to West Europe, the USA and Canada…"
"…A... reason for the ISI's helping the LTTE... was to use it for smuggling heroin to West Europe, the U.S. and Canada. During Zia-ul-Haq's regime in the 1980s, heroin had become a major source of extra revenue not only for the State of Pakistan, especially the ISI and Pakistan's nuclear and missile establishment, but also to many senior officers of the Pakistan Army, including [Musharraf et al]…"
2. Cyprus and Qatar
The newspaper Scotland on Sunday reported 16/9/ 2001 that bin Laden made his fortune in part by working with Jewish-Russian mafia operations in Qatar and Cyprus.
It has been alleged that Osama bin Laden's mother is Jewish.
3. The Caymen Islands
Source: Osama Bin Laden - A CIA Creation and It's Blowback
Michael Rupert has reported on possible links between Caymen banks and and bin Laden.
Deutsche Bank (allegedly one of the banks used by bin Laden and inside traders at the CIA) reportedly has an interest in Safron Partners, which is part of a corporate network on the Cayman Islands that is allegedly run by Bin Laden's half brother, Hassan.
Bin Laden and the CIA and a Mr Hekmatyar are reputed to have been involved in the Afghan heroin business.
Bin-Laden allegedly established branches of his business in the Cayman Islands; and he allegedly employed law firms and consultants connected to Langley, Virginia and the CIA.
Were the British interested?
The French Internet publication, Indigo, reported that bin-Laden was a guest of British Intelligence in London in 1996.
President Bush? One of his backers was James Bath, who was "the bin Laden family's representative in Texas." Bath allegedly managed millions of dollars for Khalid bin Mahfouz, one of the central figures in Bank BCCI, which was labeled as the bank for the Medellin drug cartel, Noriega, Saddam, Abu Nidal, and heroin godfather Khun Sa.
Mahfouz was apparently an investor in the Carlyle Group of which Bush senior was a director. In 1999 it was reported that bin Mahfouz was financing Osama bin Laden. Mahfouz has a palatial estate in Houston Texas.
James Bath was seemingly president of Skyway Aircraft leasing , a Texas company, owned by bin Mahfouz, and registered in the Cayman Islands.
4. The Kurds
Michael C. Ruppert refers to opium production in the Caucasus under the Kurds and smuggling through Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.
Rupert notes that both Vice President Richard Cheney and Richard Armitage are members of the US-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce.
5. The Balkans, Chechnya
Economics Professor Michel Chossudovsky of the University of Ottawa has an article entitled Who Is Osama Bin Laden? Sept 12, 2001.
http://globalresearch.ca/articles/CHO109C.html.
Chossudovsky writes:
"[Professor] Alfred McCoy's study confirms that within two years of the onslaught of the CIA operation in Afghanistan, 'the Pakistan-Afghanistan borderlands became the world's top heroin producer, supplying 60 per sent of the U.S. demand…
"The CIA continued to support the Islamic "jihad" out of Pakistan…
"The Golden Crescent drug trade was also being used to finance and equip the Bosnian Muslim Army (starting in the early 1990s) and the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). (There have been reports that bin Laden's Mujhideen mercenaries fought in the ranks of the KLA-NLA)
"With regard to Chechnya, the main rebel leaders Shamil Basayev and Al Khattab were trained and indoctrinated in CIA sponsored camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan… In this regard, the involvement of Pakistan's ISI and its radical Islamic proxies are actually calling the shots in this war..."
Chavez and Channel 4 News
The mainstream media has been attacking Chavez, so Chavez must be one of the good guys.
John Pilger wrote, on 13 May 2006 in The Guardian: "Fact-deprived attacks on Chávez in the Times and the Financial Times this week, each with that peculiar malice reserved for true dissenters from Thatcher's and Blair's one true way, follow a travesty of journalism on Channel 4 News last month..."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/story/0,,1773966,00.html
Channel 4 News is dangerous because it appears to be liberal. But Channel 4 News is very much part of the Establishment.
Despite attempts by the Venezuelan opposition and the US business press to paint the Chavez government as the cause of Venezuela's economic problems, the economic crisis in Venezuela, and indeed throughout the poor countries, is more widespread, deeper, and longer-running than anything that can be attributed to a single regime.
A quick look at the economies of Venezuela's neighbours - Colombia, or Brazil - shows that Venezuela has no monopoly on problems like poverty, inflation, unemployment, and social problems like violent crime.
Gregory Wilpert recently published an assessment of the Chavez government's fight against poverty. He argues that Chavez, on coming to power in 1999, inherited an economy that was undergoing a long-term trend towards increasing poverty, misery, and inequality.
He argues, further, that Venezuela under Chavez has managed to achieve some success in fighting poverty through redistributive policies like rural and urban land reform, micro-credit lending, public education, food distribution, and health clinics.
The baby mind reader
Nina Sebastiane is a TV presenter on the Baby Channel.
A recent guest on Baby Talk was psychic Derek Ogilvie, a Scot, who has written a book called The Baby Mind Reader.
Derek talked to Nina and to Clare Neal, who had brought her two-year-old, William, to the TV studio.
"I'm 41," says Derek. "Going back to being nine, our neighbour died, and he used to visit me."
"A spirit?" asks Nina.
"A spirit," says Derek. "But I kept it very quiet."
Derek makes 'telepathic communications' with William and learns of a miscarriage Clare had at age 18 .
"William communicates with the spirit of the child who passed away," says Derek.
Derek states that William is worried that Clare has failed to complete a course of tablets that sit in the bathroom cabinet.
Derek continues: "What William's saying to me just now is that he wants to be able to go to the toilet and do a poo. Doing a poo, not a number one, is very important to William."
Derek believes all babies are born psychic.
'We all have an ability to communicate telepathically from the moment we are born, or even earlier,' he says. 'But this ability is worn down and constrained as soon as we develop verbal articulacy. There's no need for it anymore and, therefore, our telepathic and psychic abilities are lost.'
'Babies communicate messages to me in the form of pictures or feelings, which I can then interpret and pass on to their parents,' says Derek. 'An image will appear in my mind, or a pain in my body, which helps me see what they are trying to get across. For example, a picture of an arm, and a pain in my right arm, will tell me that that is where they are feeling pain, or where, perhaps, they have sustained a previous injury that might have gone unnoticed (I had this with a little boy who'd had a small bruise on the underside of his leg that no one had seen). If I feel a pain but see a picture of their mum, they are telling me that this is where their mum hurts.'
Explosions in Indonesia (1)
It was probably Merapi which covered Borobudur in the year 1006. And during the Twentieth Century, Merapi erupted about once every five years, and killed almost two thousand people.
Jakarta Kid: 41. BANDUNG CONFERENCE
We ascended a path that took us to near the top of a volcano called Tangkuban Prahu. We peered into the crater and saw strands of smoke rising from grey ash. I was really enjoying myself.
"About one hundred miles from here," said Robert, "you get Mount Gulunggung. It erupted in 1982 and went on erupting until 1984. The sky went dark. Cars in Bandung had to have their headlights on during the day. Lots of houses were destroyed. And two Jumbo jets nearly crashed because of the dust."
"You live awfully near to an awful lot of volcanoes," I pointed out.
"Gulunggung had been dormant for centuries. Then bang!" Robert was not smiling.
On the way back to the centre of Bandung, Robert instructed me about the dangers of Mount Merapi, near Yogyakarta. It was probably Merapi which had covered Borobudur in the year 1006. And during the Twentieth Century, Merapi had erupted about once every five years, and had killed almost two thousand people.
Explosions in Indonesia (2)
Jakarta Kid: 41. BANDUNG CONFERENCE
"Let’s go back to Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president," said Robert, putting down his fork. "It was here that Sukarno held the famous Bandung Conference in 1955. Sukarno wanted Third World countries to be neutral between America and Russia. That displeased the extreme right-wingers in the American government who always want to be the dalang-dalang, the puppet masters. The story goes that the CIA trained some mercenaries in the Philippines and Japan. In 1958 these mercenaries began a series of rebellions in various parts of Indonesia. CIA pilots began bombing Indonesia. They hoped that Moslem separatists would be blamed, that the country would become chaotic and that Sukarno would be toppled." Robert paused while he took a forkful of fish.
"The Americans were the real terrorists?" I said. I was actually rather pleased that fervent Christian Robert was not automatically blaming Moslems for Indonesia’s troubles.
"Sukarno claimed that in 1958 the Americans bombed a church in Ambon in Maluku, killing everyone inside."
"What about proof?"
"What I read was that, back in 1958, a CIA pilot was shot down and captured. That was just a few days after a marketplace had been bombed. The CIA pilot was reportedly carrying documents that showed he was a pilot with the CAT airline, an airline run by the CIA."
"Did this get into the papers?"
"There was a news conference at which the pilot and his documents were shown to the world’s press. But you know what the press are like."
"How do you mean?"
"They are controlled by the powers-that-be."
Breakdown of law and order in Scotland? Time for a change.
1. According to the Dumfries Courier, 12 May 2006, there were four attacks in the small town of Dumfries within the space of a few days:
In the first attack a 78-year old woman was knocked to the ground and had her handbag stolen. The incident happened at midday on Galloway Street...
A 28-year-old man was attacked on Devorgilla Bridge by two men who stole cash and a phone.
A youth attacked a 59-year-old shopper as he left Tesco.
A 50-year-old woman was struck on the head by a man as she withdrew money from the Clydesdale Bank cash machine.
2. Glasgow Evening Times, 12 May 2006: A CHAIN-smoking Scots youngster who became pregnant at 11 is set to become the UK's youngest mum. The girl, now 12, is eight months' pregnant after losing her virginity in a drunken sex session with a 15-year-old.
Her lifestyle saw her take up smoking at nine, followed by drinking at 101/2,when she consumed cocktails of Buckfast and vodka. She has now quit school after a number of exclusions for fighting with fellow pupils and says she does not plan to return when the baby is born.
3. In Scotland it has been revealed that 47% of individuals are earning under £10,000 per year.
In Glasgow, 42 per cent of families are reliant on income support. Severe poverty in Scotland is not being reduced.
4. According to the Mail on Sunday, 29 January 2006, only 3% of crimes in Scotland result in convictions.
The Scottish Crime Survey found that only 25% of crimes were reported to the police.In 2003-2004 in Scotland, just over 1 million crimes were reported. It is estimated that the true number of crimes in Scotland in 2003-2004 was 4 million.In 2003-2004 there were only 119,994 convictions.
"The Labour Party in Scotland has had an effective majority for decades through its control of the local authorities. During this time it has spawned a distinct social layer who control billions of pounds in revenue, awarding building and planning contracts, administering services...
"The Scotsman newspaper ran several articles on Ferguslie Park Community Business Holdings (FCBH), in Paisley. This scheme, established in the 1980s in the working class area of Ferguslie Park, was supposedly aimed at building 'community' businesses as a means of tackling unemployment. The Scotsman reported that at least part of the FCBH ...had fallen under the control of Paisley's drug gangs and was being used to launder money."
6. Thomas McGraw, 'The Licensee', is/was reportedly Glasgow's crime boss. Allegedly he has friends within the Glasgow police.
Reg McKay, in The Daily Record, 29 August 2005, reported that a street brawl between police left people scrutinising the cosy relationship between the Licensee (McGraw) and 'his police officer pals.'
"One of the Serious Crime Squad grabbed McGraw and tried to take him away from his Scottish Crime Squad captors. Tug of war was on. Then one man threw a punch and bedlam broke out with police wrestling, kicking and butting each other as McGraw stood in the middle of the battle totally ignored.Locals gathered for the best entertainment they'd had in years. Duelling rozzers. One or two joined in, taking the chance of a free swipe at a copper.Eventually peace was restored and the two police outfits went into confab. Whatever was said, the handcuffs were unlocked and Thomas McGraw walked back to his flat, a free man once again."
The Daily Record wrote: "Local uniforms and CID could often be found sitting in the McGraws' home drinking tea and smoking."When McGraw bought The Caravel pub, certain well-known detectives were in regularly, drinking heavily and never putting their hand in their pockets. It was too cosy."
7. What about Scotland's oil wealth?
According to a secret government report on what would have happened in an independent Scotland:
1. Scotland would have had one of the strongest currencies in Europe.
2. Scotland would have attracted international capital into its banks in the same way as Switzerland.
3. Scotland could quickly become one of Europe's strongest economies with "embarrassingly" large tax surpluses.
4. Oil revenue would "transform Scotland into a country with a substantial and chronic surplus".
8. The answer to the problem of drugs and crime
In Switzerland, heroin addicts can get their prescriptions from doctors.
Source: http://www.narconews.com/Issue12/eurotour.html
In one of the most dramatic success stories in modern addiction treatment, doctors in Switzerland have discovered that the provision of medically determined doses of heroin to heroin addicts significantly improves their health, lifestyle and reduces the amount of crime associated with drug use when they are permitted to leave the black market environment.
The Swiss researchers concluded that:
· Both the number of criminal offenders and the number of offenses decreased by about 60% in the first six months of the program.
· Most illicit drug use, including cocaine, rapidly and markedly declined.· The number of participants on unemployment benefits fell by more than half (from 44% to 20%).
· Participants' housing situation rapidly improved, ending homelessness among the patients.· The physical health of participants improved.
· More than half of the patients who dropped out of the program did so in order to switch to another form of treatment, including abstinence.
9. Scotland needs to become independent and needs to become as rich and happy as Switzerland, or Norway or Ireland.
The Ancient Olympics dealt with many allegations concerning athletes accepting bribes to lose a competition.
In November 2006, the German referee Robert Hoyzer was sentenced to more than two years in prison. He admitted that he had accepted money to fix the outcome of matches for a Croatian gambling syndicate.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/12/sports/soccer/12soccer.html
Referees in Brazil and players in Vietnam have also recently been accused of fixing matches.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/12/sports/soccer/12soccer.html
In Italy, recent investigations suggest the possibility that Juventus has been receiving favorable treatment from referees.
A two-year-old conversation between the general director of Juventus and a soccer official has now appeared in the media.
Transcripts show Juventus's Luciano Moggi discussing the assignment of referees for league games with Pierluigi Pairetto, the refereeing official for Italy's soccer federation.
Other transcripts show: players and managers being threatened and blackmailed; discussions over refereeing assignments before games; the alleged collusion of coaches, federation officials and a soccer talk-show host; the blacklisting of people who challenged the corruption; and bribery.
Juventus's entire board of directors has now resigned (May 2006).
In 1999 a Malaysian betting syndicate was caught attempting to install a remote-control device to sabotage the floodlights at Charlton Athletic's ground. If the match had been abandoned after half-time, then the result and bets would have stood. The gang had been responsible for "floodlight failures" at West Ham's ground in November 1997, and a month later at Crystal Palace's ground during a home match of Palace's groundsharing tenant Wimbledon.
Tottenham Hotspur recently lost a vital football match after suffering from 'food poisoning'.
Ten Spurs players were struck down with suspected food poisoning on the morning of their final game of the season, against West Ham, after eating lasagne at the team’s hotel. Although Spurs tried to get the Premier League to delay the start of the game, the club fulfilled the fixture even though players were vomiting in the dressing room right up to kick-off.
Two Oswalds, two Attas, two Mohammad Sidique Khans
Reportedly, there was a Lee Harvey Oswald in New Orleans and at the same time as there was a Lee Harvey Oswald in Japan.
There was a Lee Harvey Oswald in Mexico who looked nothing like the Lee Harvey Oswald who became famous in Dallas.
One or more imposter Oswalds may have been working for the security services. The Oswald who was murdered may have been the patsy.
http://www.patshannan.bizland.com/assassinationsoswald.html
Http://www.jfkresearch.com/jfk_101.html
The Moslem Mohamed Atta may not have wanted to kill anyone.
The imposter Mohamed Atta may not have been a Moslem and may have been an agent of the security services.
The job of the imposter was to leave behind evidence implicating Moslems for 9 11. The imposter may still be alive. The 9 11 planes may have been flown by remote control.
Xymphora explains about the two Attas:
Http://xymphora.blogspot.com/2002_05_01_xymphora_archive.html
The original...Mohamed Atta is the... architecture student born in Egypt and last seen in Hamburg, Germany. He had his passport stolen in Germany in 1999.
The imposter Mohamed Atta is the guy who played Mohamed Atta in the United States.
A Mohamed Atta attended International Officer's School in Montgomery, Alabama.
The Mohamed Atta in the USA reportedly spoke Hebrew and liked lap dancers and pork chops.
Mohamed Atta - Welcome to Terrorland.
The Mohammad Sidique Khan who taught at Hillside primary School in the UK looks different from the Khan who appears in a fuzzy and jumpy video claiming to be one of the London Bombers of 7/7.
The Mohammad Sidique Khan who taught at Hillside was married and had a daughter. He appeared to have no strong religious or political beliefs.
The Mohammad Sidique Khan who went to Pakistan looks different from the Hillside Khan.
Was there a Khan who was linked to the security services and a Khan who was a patsy?
One child who was taught by Khan at Hillside said of Khan: "He seemed a really kind man, he taught the really bad kids and everyone seemed to like him. He was there about three years and then he went on holiday and never came back. We just knew him as Mr Khan."
Right-wing fundamentalists are often boylovers.
Richard Barnbrook is London leader of the right-wing British National Party, once described as the Boys’ Nipples Party.
According to The Guardian, 11 May 2006, Barnbrook produced and directed a film called ‘HMS Discovery: A Love Story’.
This film contains scenes of flagellation, young men undressing and a naked young man apparently performing a sex act on another.
'Gay porn' movie raises ripples on far right
According to a cinema listing, Mr Barnbrook starred in and co-wrote the film.
Allegedly, Barnbrook wrote the following lines of poetry: "It bares you like a foreskin's folds" and "Open-mouthed, I shall dream of altar boys."
Searchlight, an anti-fascist organisation, suggests that Barnbrook was once a member of Blair’s Labour party.
Are you wealthy?
Your disposable wealth means : your savings, your shareholdings and most of the money you have invested in your house (with mortgage and other debts deducted)
THE average disposable wealth available to households in Britain (2006):
London: £81,732
Scotland: £29,274.
Of course, you will find many people in London and in Scotland who have no savings, no shares and no house.
There were 23,351 individual insolvencies in England and Wales in the first quarter of 2006, up 12.9% on the previous quarter.
There were 33.442 possession orders in the first quarter of 2006, a 29% increase on a year earlier, and the highest since the third quarter of 1992. Possession orders are the first stage of mortgage repossessions.
In the UK, the rich are getting richer. At the same time, there is malnutrition in some parts of the UK.
About two million people in the UK are malnourished, according to the study by the Malnutrition Advisory Group.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3257605.stm
~~
Between 1990 and 2000, the share of wealth held by the richest 10% of the population rose from 47% to 54%. The wealthiest 1% saw their share leap from 18% to 23%.
An Indian journalist wrote the following in The Guardian, 27 February 1999:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/saturday_review/story/0,3605,312399,00.html
"Then, suddenly, we were hit by the reality of the poverty surrounding us in Glasgow. Most of the men in Easterhouse hadn't had a job in 20 years. They were dispirited, depressed, and often alcoholic. Their self-esteem had gone. Emotionally and mentally they were far worse off than the poor where we worked in India, even though the physical trappings of poverty were less stark."
"The Easterhouse men ... felt far more hopeless than people in India who scrabbled in garbage heaps to sell scrap metal, paper and rags to feed their children. Both groups were at the bottom of society."
The Indian journalist, Marcel-Thekaekara, was told by a local social worker, Bob Holman, about Third World poverty in Glasgow, including:
malnutrition,
one generation being shorter and weaker than the last,
lack of protein.
Figures from Glasgow:
http://www.wsws.org/articles/1999/mar1999/glas-m10.shtml
* In one school session 32,653 children, 43 percent of the total school population, received free meals at school.
44,102, 58 percent, received grants for clothing.
*Income Support is paid at a poverty level rate of £50.45 a week for a single person over 25.
A young couple receives £60.10. If they are over 25 they get £79.10.
"Social conditions in Glasgow are a direct result of two decades of continual attacks on the working class, supervised by the ruling Labour City Council."
~~
Scotland should be as rich as Ireland or Norway. Has malnutrition affected the brains of the Scottish voters?
Why do the Scots not kick out all the Labour and Conservative politicians?
Mark Oaten, Brokeback Mountain, Donald Rumsfeld, Hitler, Napoleon, Martin Luther, Abraham Lincoln...
Imagine if the Kaiser had been open about his sexuality.
Would we have avoided World War One?
Imagine if Hitler had been open about his sexuality.
Would we have avoided World War Two?
Hitler was bisexual?
And would the UK Liberal Democrats be ahead in the polls if Mark Oaten was more open about his sexuality?
The talented Marina Hyde, in The Guardian, 9 May 2006, wrote about Mark Oaten:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/story/0,,1770654,00.html
The Lib Dem MP ... revealed that as he drove to a safe house on the morning that the story of his liaison with a male prostitute broke, he phoned his psychiatrist, a man he had been seeing "for several years".
"But, as I now realised," wrote Mark, "we had never really worked out why a 40-year-old married man with two children goes to a male prostitute. It certainly made no sense on that drive from my home."
Yes, it is most baffling. What on earth could be behind his behaviour? A small fluctuation in the Japanese futures markets, perhaps, precipitating some sort of butterfly effect? A shift of tectonic plates, imperceptible to Britons, but causing a seismograph needle to jump somewhere in the South Pacific? Or even - but no, it's too stratospherically outlandish - the possibility that Mark likes sex with men?
UK worst in Europe for anti-social behaviour
The UK has the worst problem with anti-social behaviour in Europe, according to a survey.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4751315.stm
People in six nations were asked where there were big or moderate problems.
76% said the UK had a big or moderate problem.
44% said the Netherlands had a big or moderate problem.
Most people said parents were responsible for making sure their children were not anti-social.
The lack of positive role models was blamed for much anti-social behaviour.
68% of people in the UK saw alcohol as a factor.
"Mossad killed Hariri" - German criminologist
In "Hariri's Assassination," German criminologist JŸrgen Cain KŸlbel says that "Israeli Mossad killed Hariri to instigate political tension in Lebanon."
KŸlbel also accused the former chief of the United Nations committee charged with investigating Hariri's death, German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis, of having misled the investigation.
Who benefits?
From Asia Times Online :: Middle East News, Iraq, Iran current affairs :
Only Israel appears to benefit from Hariri's assassination.
Significantly, one of Hariri's consultants, Mustafa al-Naser, told Iranian state news agency IRNA on Monday that "the assassination of Hariri is the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad's job, aimed at creating political tension in Lebanon".
An array of Arab Middle East analysts, as well as the Lebanese government, point out that the blast was eerily similar to previous Israeli-orchestrated bombings against former Palestinian leaders.
International public opinion may forget that it was current Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, then a general, who invaded Lebanon in 1982, supported by falangists, practically destroyed Beirut and plunged Lebanon into civil war.
Hariri was Sharon's opposite: almost single-handedly he guided Beirut's reconstruction.
Romania: castles, bears, floods, US bases, extreme poverty
Romania has castles, medieval towns, horse-drawn carts, half of Europe's bear population and lots of wolves.
Images: http://web.mit.edu/romania/www/Romania/Photogallery/Places/
Romania also has US bases. The US military has access to Mihail Kogalniceanu air base in south-east Romania, just inland from the Black Sea. Romania has troops in Iraq. Romania has been mentioned as a country hosting CIA detention centres.
Romania has seen much change since the 1989 revolution. There is much severe poverty.
~~
May 04 2006: according to the Kyiv post, http://www.kyivpost.com/bn/24406/ :
Floods hit villages in southern Romania in recent weeks. Half the homes in the village of Manastire were wiped out. Many houses were made of mud and straw bricks. 13,000 Romanians were evacuated from their homes.
The Danube had been fed by melting snow and rainfall in central Europe.
Parts of neighboring Serbia, Bulgaria and Ukraine were also affected.
~~
Crime gangs from Romania are heavily involved in people smuggling for the sex trade.
Organized groups of thieves and pickpockets operate in train stations and on trains, subways, and buses in major cities. Tourists changing money can be targeted by crooks who are sometimes posing as plainclothes policemen.
Western “market led” reforms by the likes of the World Bank have left most of the population 8 times poorer than 10 years ago. Why help romania - Relief Fund charity
44% of Romanians are now reportedly living in poverty. http://www.relieffundforromania.co.uk/why_help_romania.html
95% of Romanian households in some parts of the north east have no running water, 10% cannot afford to connect to the electricity supply and there are no social services.
Sometimes parents have to give gifts to teachers in order to make sure their children are well treated.
Sometimes people have to pay a bribe for a driver's license, decent hospital treatment or a seat on a crowded airliner.
John-Reid, Karadzic, Lobbygate, NHS deficits, Commissioner for Standards, drugs
John Reid is UK Home Secretary and MP for Airdrie and Shotts.
"If we had a Politburo instead of a cabinet, Reid would probably be running the State Security Division." - Kevin Toolis, Guardian 2 March 2002.
Reid "is part of the Lanarkshire West Coast Labour mafia. It's not about... making life better for the working class. It's about looking after yourself and your mates and not being accountable to anyone." - Dean Nelson, editor Scottish edition of the Sunday Times.
1. Karadzic
During the 1990s Bosnian War, John Reid became friends with Serb rebel leader and indicted war-criminal Radovan Karadzic. Reid has admitted that he spent three days at a luxury Geneva lakeside hotel as a guest of Karadzic in 1993.
2. Lobbygate.
Kevin Reid is the son of John Reid.
On 31 August 1999, in the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh, Ben Laurance of the Observer newspaper posed as a businessman during talks with Kevin Reid, a lobbyist with the public relations firm Beattie Media.
Laurance told Kevin Reid he was interested in PFI ( private investment in services such as education and hospitals).
Kevin Reid boasted of his contacts: "I worked for Jack [McConnell] and for Wendy [Alexander—minister for communities] and for Henry [McCleish—Enterprise Minister] and for Donald [Dewar—First Minister] on a one-to-one basis. I worked with the Labour Party media monitoring in the press team and I briefed them every night."
Kevin Reid was filmed saying he knew the Scottish secretary "very, very well .... he is my father."
3. National Health Service deficits
When he was Health Secretary, John Reid was responsible for the new national consultants’ contract.
The cost of the new pay deal is said to be the cause of the large deficits now being run up by health boards.
4. Censured by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards
While he was Secretary of State for Scotland, John Reid became the first senior cabinet member ever to be severely censured by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Elizabeth Filkin.
Reid was accused of using parliamentary allowances, taxpayer's money, to pay the salaries of his son and other staff working for Labour's electoral campaign.
In the course of the inquiry, it emerged that Reid had held "discussions" with witnesses, 'which in plain unparliamentary language sounded a lot like threats'.
Straw called for normalization of relations with Hamas. Straw opposed military action against Iran. Did Israel order Blair to sack Straw?
Who are Blair's paymasters?
Is Blair doing the bidding of Israel and the Israeli-Americans in Washington?
1. On 30 April 2006, during a visit to Saudi Arabia, Jack Straw called for normalization of relations with Hamas.
2. As UK Foreign Secretary, Straw ruled out any military action against Iran.
Straw said repeatedly that a military strike on Iran is "inconceivable". Straw dismissed as "nuts" a report that George Bush was keeping on the table the option of using tactical nuclear weapons against Tehran's nuclear plants.
3. In April Bush phoned Blair. According to friends of Straw, President Bush was furious that Mr Straw said it was "nuts" to use nuclear weapons against Iran.
4. Straw was removed from his job as UK Foreign Secretary in the May 2006 cabinet changes.
5. New UK Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett is a Blair loyalist, and therefore likely to support Israel.
According to The Independent, 7 May 2006: http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/politics/article362559.ece
There is said to be jubilation this weekend among Washington's neo-conservatives at Mr Straw's demise. One retired senior US intelligence officer told his British counterpart recently that the White House lost confidence in the Foreign Secretary at least six months ago.
Vote fraud in UK local elections?
In London, Labour has gained Lambeth in the local elections (May 2006).
In Manchester, Labour has gained Fallowfield, Gorton, Longsight and Whalley Range to keep overall control of the city.
In Bolton, the Liberal Democrats lost four seats making Labour the largest party.
This is odd, as the BBC is projecting the national share of vote as:
CONSERVATIVE 40%
LIBERAL DEMOCRAT 27%
LABOUR 26%.
Labour did not do well in the local elections overall, but, they did not do as badly as they should have done.
Has there been fraud in places such as Lambeth, Manchester and Bolton?
The following comes from The Sunday Times and describes Lambeth when it was last under Labour control.
SECRET PAPERS EXPOSE LAMBETH AS A BOROUGH ROTTEN TO THE CORE
The Sunday Times, 30 May 30 1993, reported on financial scandals and rackets in the London borough of Lambeth.
Confidential papers obtained by The Sunday Times revealed massive fraud and mismanagement in the Labour-controlled borough.
Lambeth:
1. Charged thousands of times the real cost for repairs and maintenance.
2. Altered or destroyed documents to allow unnecessary, unauthorised or fictitious work to be billed to the authority. Papers relating to millions of pounds of public money are missing.
3. Handed out £2m of work for the environment department's homelessness initiative programme to "a small select list" of contractors, without tenders and on the say-so of one council officer.
The government's District Audit Service issued a "public interest" report accusing the council of unlawfully misdirecting more than £20m.
Paul Claydon, the district auditor, spent two years investigating Lambeth.In one instance, a repair to a wall had a correct price of £184.30, and a special Lambeth price of £8,573.54.
In another, a £33.86 job to replace ceramic tiles was billed at £1,055.62. One item which rightfully should have cost £7.26 was billed for £10,204.74.
In Manchester, Labour has gained Fallowfield, Gorton, Longsight and Whalley Range to keep overall control of the city.
In Bolton, the Liberal Democrats lost four seats making Labour the largest party.
This is odd, as the BBC is projecting the national share of vote as:
CONSERVATIVE 40%
LIBERAL DEMOCRAT 27%
LABOUR 26%.
Lack of trust in US and UK media according to poll
A 10-country opinion poll for Reuters, the BBC and the Media Centre found British and U.S. consumers have low levels of trust in the mainstream media.
Consumers drop news sources that lose trust-survey
In Britain, in the year 2002, only 29% trusted the mainstream media.
In Britain, in 2006, only 47% trust the mainstream media.
In Britain 64% believe the media does not report all sides of the story.
In America 69% believe that the media does not report all sides of the story.
GlobeScan President Doug Miller told Reuters he was surprised by the poll's findings in Britain and the U.S, where levels of public trust in the media appear much lower than in developing markets.
The low levels of trust may, he said, be related to perceptions in the U.S. that the media is too close to the government on issues relating to the Iraq war.
"It may have something to do with the pulling away from traditional media that we're seeing -- this move towards the Internet where people can get other perspectives on major stories that they're not getting from the mainstream media."
GlobeScan found that 28 percent of consumers have stopped using a certain media source in the past year because it lost their trust. Miller said he believed this presented media organisations with an important lesson.
"I think what we can conclude from that is that trust is a key competitive advantage in the market," he said.
Did Charles Clarke release the 7 July London bombers?
Britain’s Home Secretary Charles Clarke and the French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy met at a European Union terrorism conference in July 2005. There was a press conference.
At the 13 July 2005 press conference, Sarkozy said that he had been told that some of the 7 July London bomb suspects had been arrested in 2004 and then released.
Some reports claimed that (1) Sarkozy's information had come from Clarke (2) Clarke had wanted the suspects released.
The BBC web site quoted Sarkozy as saying “It seems that part of this team had been subject to partial arrest.”
Clarke denied that any such conversation had taken place.
In July 2005, Charles Clarke said the attacks came “out of the blue” and that the four bombers—Mohammad Sidique Khan, Shehzad Tanweer, Germaine Lindsay and Hasib Hussain—were “clean skins” with no known links to terrorism.
After bombing, a deepening French-British rift - Europe ...
Christophe Chaboud, France's new antiterrorism coordinator... leaked.
In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde that appeared on newsstands on 11 July ... Chaboud announced that he knew ''the nature of the explosives'' used in the London bombings.
It ''appears to be military, which is very worrisome,'' he said, adding: ''We're more used to cells making homemade explosives from chemical substances.''
Still, these are not normal times. After an emergency EU summit meeting of justice and interior ministers in Brussels on July 13, the French interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, suggested that part of the cell responsible for the London terror attacks had been arrested before.
The remarks prompted an immediate response from the British home secretary, Charles Clarke, who had called the meeting. ''I've heard Sarkozy's remarks to the press and there is absolutely no foundation in them,'' Clarke said in a news conference.
Asked whether he had confronted Sarkozy directly about his statements, Clarke said there had not been the opportunity because Sarkozy left the meeting ''halfway through.''
''He didn't feel it was appropriate to stay to the end of the discussions,'' Clarke said. Meanwhile, the investigation into the London bombings continues, with British police and intelligence officials handling the information they share with their European counterparts with extreme care. ''This leak by the French has been very badly perceived,'' said a senior intelligence official in one European police force. ''Since then, it's no longer worth it to try to get information from the British.''
(Note that Lee Harvey Oswald and Mohamed Atta appear to have had doubles. The alleged 7 July bombers may have had doubles.)
Britain: outstanding questions on July 7 bombings warrant ...
London-Bombs: MOHAMMED SIDIQUE KHAN - Links to the security services.
Britain: More evidence suggests July 7 bombings were preventable
Private affluence and public squalor
JK Galbraith talked of "private affluence and public squalor".
Private affluence? Think of the rich folks who support Bush and Blair. Think of the executives with yachts. Think of the palaces of the elite in Lagos and Los Angeles.
Public squalor? Think of streets that are run-down and neglected. Think of uncomfortable buses and trains. Think of children dying of TB because there is no money for medicine.
Galbraith, interviewed for The Progressive, October 2000, said:
http://www.progressive.org/mag_amitpalgalbraith
"We worry about our schools. We worry about our public recreational facilities. We worry about our law enforcement and our public housing. All of the things that bear upon our standard of living are in the public sector.
"We don't worry about the supply of automobiles...
"Things that come from the private sector are in abundant supply; things that depend on the public sector are widely a problem...
"We talk of the enormous virtues of work, but it turns out that that is mostly for the poor. If you're rich enough or if you're a college professor, the virtue lies in leisure and the use you make of your leisure time.
"Next, I go on to the stock market, where I show, I think without a doubt, that what is called 'financial genius' is merely a rising market...
"I would put primary emphasis on a good standard of living equitably distributed. It can't be equal, but one that eliminates the terrible cruelty of poverty."
We should be spending more on getting rid of squalor. The small western European countries may be getting things right.
