People Power is usually about changing regimes to suit the American Military Industrial Complex.

As Almond states, "People Power is, it turns out, more about closing things than creating an open society. It shuts factories but, worse still, minds. Its advocates demand a free market in everything - except opinion."

THE FALL OF SUHARTO AND THE CIA

In Indonesia, in the years 1997- 1998, there were riots in various parts of Indonesia. Sometimes these riots were aimed against the Chinese-Indonesians. Some riots looked spontaneous and some looked as if they had been planned. (http://www.insideindonesia.org/edit50/riots.htm)

Intelligence agencies

Back in the 1950s the British and American intelligence agencies had organised rebellions in various parts of Indonesia, in order to undermine President Sukarno.(http://www.westpapuanews.com/articles/publish/article_31.shtml)

The generals

In 1998 one of the key generals was Prabowo, son of Dr. Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, a former Finance Minister, said to have once worked with the British and the Americans against Sukarno. Prabowo had learnt about terrorism at Fort Bragg and Fort Benning in the US. General Prabowo and terror (http://yayasanhak.minihub.org/mot/Prabowo.htm) In May 1998, Prabowo was commander of Kostrad, the strategic reserve, the regiment Suharto commanded when he took power in 1965. Prabowo's friend Muchdi ran Kopassus (special forces) and his friend Sjafrie ran the Jakarta Area Command. General Wiranto, the overall head of the military, was seen as a rival to Prabowo.

The American Defence Secretary, William Cohen, was in Jakarta in January 1998 and he visited both Prabowo and Wiranto. The CIA chief had also been a recent visitor to Jakarta. The CIA and the Pentagon were close to both Prabowo and Wiranto. (http://solidarity.igc.org/atc/emily75.html)

Students

At the start of May 1998, students were holding peaceful demonstrations on university campuses across the country. They were protesting against massive price rises for fuel and energy, and they were demanding that President Suharto should step down.
On May 12th, students at Jakarta's Trisakti University, many of them the children of the elite, planned to march to parliament to present the government with their demands for reform. The police prevented the students from marching. Some time after 5pm, uniformed men on motorcycles appeared on the flyover which overlooks Trisakti. Shots rang out. Four students were killed.

Riots of May 13-14

On the 13th of May there were reports of rioting in the area around Trisakti. President Suharto was attending a conference in Egypt and the military top brass went off to Malang in East Java to attend a ceremony.

On the 14th of May, serious rioting took place in the Jakarta area. There were no signs of any uniformed soldiers on the streets.

Deaths

Over 1,000 people died during these Jakarta riots, most having been burnt in malls and supermarkets but some having been shot or beaten.

Alleged involvement of the military in planning the riots

Father Sandyawan Sumardi, a 40-year-old Jesuit priest and son of a police chief, led an independent investigation into the events of May 1998. As a member of the Team of Volunteers for Humanitarian Causes he interviewed people who had witnessed the alleged involvement of the military in organising the riots and rapes.

A security officer alleged that Kopassus (special forces) officers had ordered the burning down of a bank; a taxi driver reported hearing a man in a military helicopter encouraging people on the ground to carry out looting; shop-owners at a Plaza claimed that, before the riots, military officers tried to extract protection money; a teenager claimed he and thousands of others had been trained as protesters; a street child alleged that Kopassus officers ordered him and and his friends to become rioters; there was a report of soldiers being dressed up as students and then taking part in rioting; eyewitnesses spoke of muscular men with short haircuts arriving in military-style trucks and directing attacks on Chinese homes and businesses.

There were reports of children being encouraged to enter malls and then of the malls being set on fire; there were allegations that muscular men with short haircuts had gang-raped little Chinese girls and then murdered some of them.

Suharto told he had lost the support of the military

Some of Suharto's former allies deserted him. Wiranto allowed students to occupy Parliament. Reportedly Wiranto reported to Suharto on May 20th that Suharto no longer had the support of the army. Suharto was forced to resign on May 21 and was replaced by Habibie, his Vice President.

The continuing importance of the military

Wiranto remained as chief of the armed forces. Wiranto's troops began removing the students from the parliament building.

One result of the May riots was that the military appeared to remain the power behind the throne. In 2004, General Yudhoyono became president.

BELGIUM - DUTROUX - Was Dutroux working for the security services?

PART ONE - DURBUY IN THE ARDENNES

This is the Southern, French speaking, Roman Catholic part of Belgium. What they call Wallonia. For the tourist, the attractions are many: The rounded hills of the Ardennes, forests, rivers, art, carnivals, and fine food.

"Here we are getting a bad name in Belgium," says Didier, the middle-aged, balding barman at our hotel.

"Marc Dutroux?" says Myrianne.

"Many people felt the truth did not come out at his trial," says Didier. "He knows too much about the top people."

"There's always rumours," I say.

"I'll tell you," says Didier, fingering the crucifix suspended from his neck, "there are girls coming in here from Africa. To brothels in a city near here. Very young girls. Probably with AIDS."

"The world's a wicked place, " I comment.

"No, wait," says Myrianne, "the International Organisation for Migration has said Belgium is the top place for sex slavery. Young girls from Rwanda, the Congo, and so on."

"Not for tourists like you," says Didier.

"Thank you," I say. "No, these brothels are very expensive and very exclusive. Only for very top people who will keep quiet."

"It's true," says Myrianne. "Look the Observer said the same thing. It talked about 'the squalid road that leads to Belgium'."

PART TWO - LIEGE.

We reach Liege by train. Liege, in Wallonia, is a city associated with a river, industry, churches and ....MAIGRET's author Georges Simenon. Simenon! What a man. An expert on the seedy side of life. Did he really have sex with 20,000 women? Was he really homosexual?

Liege is a place to wander, along the river, through the Aquarium at Quai Van Beneden, into museums and churches, and along the lively streets of the working class area called Outremeuse. The market , La BATTE market, at Quai de la Batte, on Sundays, stretches alongside the river and attracts thousands of people. Worth a visit. Liege has wonderful food. For example- salade liegeoise which is potatoes, smoked bacon, onions, French beans, and parsley. Yummy.

"OK," says Myrianne, in the cafe called Vaudree II, "A quiz about famous Belgians."

"Tintin," I say, putting down my beer glass. "He was Belgian. Ask me about Tintin."

"No, Michel Nihoul."

"He plays for Anderlecht?"

"No. He was the guy who allegedly organised orgies in a Belgian chateau. Orgies allegedly attended by a former European commissioner, judges, senior politicians, lawyers and policemen."

"And?"

"He was one of the accomplices of you-know-who."

"Marc Dutroux."

"The subject of the book called 'The X-files: What Belgium Was Not Supposed to Know About the Dutroux Affair.' Now, next question. Who is Regina Louf?"

"Famous cyclist."

"No. Regina Louf testified to the authorities about orgies at which she allegedly saw children tortured and murdered. The allegation in the X-files is that, at Black masses, attended by members of Belgium's elite, children were sacrificed."

"Is she taken seriously?"

"Not apparently by certain top people. But, quite recently, at the village of Forchies-la-Marche, the police investigated an institute of Black Magic. They dug up human skulls. And the International Herald Tribune did a famous piece about all this. They quoted Guy Poncelet as saying the X-files book was convincing."

"So, the next question is : who is Guy Poncelet?

"Answer: I don't know."

"He's a judge. His son, a police officer, was mysteriously shot dead. This son had been investigating a case involving Dutroux. And the next question: who is Judge Connerotte?"

"I need another beer. You know they have about one thousand different beers in this cafe!"

"Judge Connerotte was the judge who caught Dutroux."

"The authorities must have been pleased."

"The authorities removed Connerotte from the case. Now, another question: who is Mr De Baets?"

"This is a case for Maigret."

"De Baets was the official in charge of investigating the X-files. The authorities removed him from the case."

"What's all this got to do with Liege?"

"Who is Andre Cools?"

"Belgian rock singer?"

"In 1991, Belgium's former deputy prime minister, Andre Cools, announced that he was about to make some revelations about the mafia and their links to some of the most important people in Liege."

"SO?"

"Cools was shot dead. Before he could speak out."

"How's your beer?"

"Fine. Who is Alain Van der Biest?"

"Belgian artist?"

"After Dutroux's arrest in 1996, arrests were made in the Cool's case."

"So, who got arrested?"

"One of those arrested was Alain Van der Biest, a Socialist Minister, alleged to have close links with the mafia gangs of Liege."

"How's your beer?"

"Who is Guy Mathot?"

"That's a difficult one."

"Belgian TV came up with an anonymous witness who claimed that leading Socialist politician, Guy Mathot, had ordered Cools to be killed."

"What sort of guy is Mathot?"

"In 1994 Mathot was charged with corruption over kickbacks paid to Belgium's Socialist parties. Now, here's a famous Belgian you will have heard of. Who is Willy Claes?"

"Famous Belgian chef?"

"Claes was NATO Secretary General and a Belgian. He was caught up in the Mathot kickbacks thing and was forced to resign. Who is Melchior Wathelet?"

"Tell me."

"It was top judge Wathelet who released Dutroux from prison in 1991. Wathelet was Belgium's judge at the European Court of Justice. Wathelet was Belgium's Justice Minister at the time when Cools was shot dead. Cools' son called for Wathelet and other top judges to be removed from office. In 1996 there were suggestions that the gangs involved in the Cools' killing had been involved with Dutroux."

1,300 children disappeared in the Brussels region between 1991 and 1996. According to government official Mr De Baets, what happened after several of these disappearances was that Marc Dutroux paid large sums of money into various bank accounts.

Prince George, MI6 and the Nazis

Prince George, Duke of Kent, who died in mysterious circumstances in 1942, was a top freemason and allegedly was involved in a plot with Rudolf Hess and MI6.

In 1941 there was a large 'peace party' in Britain which allegedly included much of the aristocracy, many MPs, many members of the security services and members of the Royal Family. The 'peace party' wanted to do a deal with Hitler. Some members of the 'peace party' admired the Nazis; some did not. Prince George, Duke of Kent, was reportedly a member of the group that wanted peace.

Lynn Picknett writes: "in 1942 the Duke of Kent was acting as political advisor for George VI... It wasn’t so much that he was pro-Nazi or sucking up to Hitler; he was simply pro-peace.

' Double Standards: The Rudolf Hess Cover-up' by Lynn Picknett, Clive Prince & Stephen Prior argues that:

1. Hess flew to Scotland in 1941 with Hitler's blessing.

2. Hess was to meet with a faction of British royalty who wanted to arrange peace between Britain and Nazi Germany.

3. Churchill and his faction got to Hess first when his plane landed and locked him up, even though Hess had been guaranteed safe passage by King George VI.

4. It is possible that the Duke of Kent rescued Hess and tried to fly to Sweden to continue secret peace negotiations.

5. The Duke's plane crashed approximately two miles from where Hess was kept on the shores of Loch More. Hess may have died in the plane crash. The plane crash may not have been accidental.

To many members of the 'peace party', the real enemy was the Soviet Union. They wanted Hitler to wage war on Stalin.

Clive Prince writes: 'Churchill was in a very, very insecure position politically in May 1941. In fact, three days before Hess arrived, there had been a vote of no-confidence in Churchill. He didn’t have the support of the aristocracy or the support of MI6 and the King. But the Hess affair basically gave Churchill the opportunity to blackmail his opponents who were involved with the Hess flight into supporting him...

"He also used the Hess flight to ensure that Hitler went ahead with his attack on Russia six weeks after Hess arrived...."

US military expansion in the Middle East - A US air base to be built in Lebanon?

Seumas Milne wrote in the Guardian, 10 March 2005, about the Middle East.

In Beirut up to a million demonstrators demonstrated in favour of Syria and against the USA.

One leader of the anti-Syrian protests is Pierre Gemayel whose militiamen massacred 2,000 Palestinian refugees in Sabra and Shatila in 1982.

If there was a democratic election, Gemayel and his friends would be defeated by a Hizbullah-led government. Hizbullah drove Israel out of Lebanon in 2000.

Democratic elections in Syria, or Egypt or Saudi Arabia could lead to the election of strongly anti-western governments.

Milne, in the Guardian, points out that it is not democracy, but the US military, that is on the march.

1. Millions of Iraqis were unable or unwilling to vote.
2. Key political forces were excluded.
3. Candidates' names were secret.
4. Alleged fraud widespread.
5. The system was designed to maintain US control.

The Americans now have a military presence in:
1. Saudi Arabia,
2. Iraq,
3. the UAE,
4. Kuwait,
5. Bahrain,
6. Oman and Qatar

Wayne Madsen, of Online Journal, writes that, according to high-level Lebanese intelligence sources, the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was reportedly authorized by the USA and Israel.

Hariri reportedly opposed the construction of a major U.S. air base in the north of Lebanon.

"The United States wants Syrian troops completely out of Lebanon before construction of the base is initiated."

Lebanese intelligence sources claim that the contract for the northern Lebanese air base has been given to Jacobs Engineering Group of Pasadena, California; Bechtel will also be involved.

The Lebanese air base is reportedly to be used
1. as a transit and logistics hub for U.S. forces in Iraq
2. as a rest and relaxation location for U.S. troops in the region.
3. to protect U.S. oil pipelines in the region (Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Mosul/Kirkuk-Ceyhan)
4. to destabilize the Assad government in Syria.

Sexpionage - Part 2

Christine Keeler, in her book 'The Truth At Last', claims that:

1. Ward and MI5 chief Roger Hollis were spies for the Russians.

2. She met Roger Hollis and Anthony Blunt in Ward's flat.

3. Ward was probably murdered.

4. She may have been set up from the start.

5. Ward asked her to find out from Profumo when Germany would get nuclear weapons.

Who gained from the Profumo Affair?

Harold Wilson became Prime Minister.

Anatoli Golitsin, a spy who defected from the KGB, claimed that Hugh Gaitskell was murdered in 1963 so that Harold Wilson, a 'KGB agent', could become leader of the Labour Party.

Was Wilson working for Russia or Israel?

Harold Wilson was President of the Board of Trade from 1947-51. The few people who could get permission from the Board of Trade to import heavily rationed raw materials or finished goods were in a good position to become vastly rich.

Among the lucky few who got licenses were Montague Meyer, Joe Kagan and Rudy Sternberg. Kagan and Sternberg later became peers. Meyer gave Wilson a consultancy which took him on frequent trips to Moscow and Eastern Europe.

After the 'mysterious' death of Hugh Gaitskell, Wilson became Labour leader and eventually Prime Minister.

Harold Wilson's 'private office' was funded in secret by a wealthy group which included Lord Goodman, Sir Samuel Fisher, and Rudy Sternberg.

In the 1970's, Private Eye began to receive information of a possible link between Wilson and the Israeli secret service and the KGB. In connection with alleged plots, the names of various people were handed to Private Eye.

Labour MP Ian Mikardo had at one time partnered Leslie Paisner in a business that traded with East Germany. Mikardo's pair in the House of Commons was Barnaby Drayson who worked for Rudy Sternberg, as did Wilfred Owen MP who had resigned after being revealed as a spy for Czechoslovakia. Montague Meyer, it turned out, was the man who had bought up much of the timber felled in Tanganyika during Labour's ill-fated groundnut scheme.

Then there was Labour MP Edward Short 'who had been in the habit of receiving bundles of banknotes from T Dan Smith', the city boss of Newcastle and one time partner of Eric Levine.

Kagan was a frequent visitor to Downing Street. He was also on friendly terms with the station chief of the Russian KGB. After being questioneded by the police about tax and currency offences he eventually 'fled' to Israel, where perhaps his real allegiance lay.

Sir Rudy Sternberg was also under investigation by the security services.

What may have stopped Private Eye from finally getting at the truth was the intervention of the Jewish businessman James Goldsmith, a friend of PM Wilson's personal secretary, Marcia Williams. Marcia was also a friend of Kagan. Private Eye had mistakenly claimed that Goldsmith had been present at a lunch given by John Aspinall, on the day after the disappearance of Lord Lucan. Goldsmith began criminal libel proceedings against Private Eye.

Patrick Marnham, in his brilliant book "Trail of Havoc: In the Steps of Lord Lucan", writes that Goldsmith was "effectively silencing the only newspaper which migh t have made headway with the ....allegations."Goldsmith later became a lord. Sir Joseph Kagan was later imprisoned.

But the possible links between Labour and Israel's secret service may not have ended with Wilson. Private Eye began to take an interest in Robert Maxwell, the chief fund raiser for Labour. Maxwell received a peerage, mysteriously disappeared, and 'his body' was buried with great honour in Israel. It was assumed by many that he was a top Israeli spy.

And what of Tony Blair. Private Eye has pointed out that Blair's chief fund raiser is Lord Levy, a man with strong links to Israel. Blair's chief foreign policy adviser was Sir David Manning........

Indonesia's military - bombing and backing.

Brawling, Bombing, and “Backing”

John Roosa writes in Inside Indonesia about Indonesia's military.

"Imagine the following scenario: three truckloads of men armed with submachine guns and grenade launchers surround a police station late one night. They shoot their way inside and then torch it. In the chaos, sixty-one prisoners escape and over one ton of marijuana being held as evidence disappears. Some of the men then drive to the electricity relay station and force the workers at gunpoint to blackout the city. In total darkness, they head off to attack another police force in the same area. When they withdraw in the morning, after nine hours of unloading their firepower into two police facilities, they have killed seven policemen, three civilians, and suffered one casualty. This is what transpired in the town of Binjai, near Medan, on 29-30 September 2002."

The attackers were members of Indonesia's elite Kostrad regiment.

The soldiers attacked the police in order to release a drug dealer who had been paying the soldiers protection money. The Kostrad soldiers wanted to make it clear that they run the drug trade in Binjai.

Maj. Gen. Agus Wirahadikusumah said in 1999 that the military were ‘backers of prostitution, gambling, and narcotics.’ (The general died rather suddenly after making this statement.)

On 26 December 1999, about 50 soldiers attacked and destroyed a police post in the village of Nipah-Nipah. They shot and killed a police corporal and seriously wounded two other policemen.

On 28 April 2000, 30 soldiers attacked a police station in Karawang.

On 19 June 2000, about 50 marines attacked a police station in the middle of Jakarta (the Mampang headquarters). They stabbed three policemen and wrecked the building.

On 15 September 2001, Kostrad troops attacked a police station in the center of the city of Madiun in East Java. Three civilian bystanders were killed in the shooting.

This is just a sample of the incidents reported in newspapers.

On 4 May 2000, a bomb was found in the Attorney General’s office in Jakarta. The serial number was traced back to the East Java army command. The bomb was reportedly planted by men working for Tommy Suharto who was being questioned by the Attorney General at that time.

The Jakarta Stock Exchange was bombed on 13 September 2000. Ten people were killed and the building was badly damaged. Among those charged with the bombing were two soldiers. Reportedly the explosives used in the blast came from the military. The two soldiers were able to escape from prison.

In Aceh, the independence forces have been able to purchase weapons from the military.

It is 'highly probable' that the army killed three schoolteachers working for Freeport in West Papua on 31 August 2002. The human rights organisation Elsham claimed that the army was responsible. The province’s former police chief, I Made Pastika privately told journalists that the police believe the army carried out the murders. Officials in the U.S. embassy in Jakarta have intercepts of the army’s radio communications. These intercepts suggest that the military murdered the American schoolteachers. According to Hamish McDonald in the Sydney Morning Herald (2 November 2002), the army wanted to pressure Freeport into paying US$10 million as protection money.

In conflict regions such as Aceh and Papua, the army 'devotes much of its time to fighting civilians and policemen to secure its own revenue'.

Indonesia and continuing social tension

Max Lane writes in Inside Indonesia about continuing social tensions after the elections.

Suharto became unpopular because of

(1) discontent among the elite

(2) discontent among the poor.

There had been large protests over the Kedung Ombo dam development in Central Java; there were big strikes at industrial plants like Great Rivers and Gajah Tunggal; there were protests about the land occupations of Cimacan and other areas... The basic problem was poverty and inequality.

Habibie, Wahid, Megawati and SBY have continued the New Order’s neo-liberal economic strategy, something that pleases the IMF and World Bank.

1. Subsidies on prices of basic goods have been reduced
2. Protection for Indonesian based industry and agriculture has been removed

The result:

1. Factory closures
2. Declines in important areas of agricultural production.

3. Strikes over privatisation, redundancy or pay.
4. Protests by farmers about land compensation or other issues.
5. Ocupations of university administration offices to protest against fee increases.
6. Protests by teachers, nurses and village administration employees about insufficient money.

The media is now worrying about further reductions in subsidies on fuel and the inevitable rise in prices.

Employers are pushing for a reduction in the minimum wage.

The new World Trade Organisation regulations, allowing more cheap imports into the country, could lead to more industrial zones closing down.

The elections have not ended the fighting amongst the elite about how power is shared.

Haiti

Aristide, Haiti's president, was overthrown twice 'by thugs supported by the United States'.

1991 : The leaders of the coup 'were on the CIA payroll'. The death squad that killed thousands of Aristide's supporters between 1991 and 1994 was led by Emmanuel Constant, who told the world on CBS' 60 Minutes that the CIA hired him for the job.

2004 : Jeffrey Sachs of Colombia University said, "The United States turned off the tap... They did that deliberately to bring down Aristide."

The Inter-American Development Bank and World Bank cut off funding from 2001-2003.

The USA gave tens of millions of dollars to the opposition, which included former military personnel - including convicted murderers.

In 2004, US forces reportedly forced Aristide to go to the airport where he boarded a plane to the Central African Republic.

What is Haiti like now?

The Center for the Study of Human Rights at the University of Miami Law School conducted an investigation in Haiti in November 2004.

Among the findings: "summary executions are a police tactic,"

the jails are filled with political prisoners,

many prisoners are held without charge, beaten and denied medical help.

When thousands poured out of Bel Aire slum, the Haitian National Police 'opened fire on singing, chanting men, women and children'; five people were killed.

Father Gerard Jean-Juste works among the poor in Haiti. He was seized by Haitian police, wearing hoods, while feeding poor children in his parish last. He was held in deplorable conditions without a trial.

Witnesses have spoken of spoken of massacres of Aristide supporters in several poor Port au Prince neighborhoods. These are have been documented police raids into Aristide strongholds, accompanied by UN troops, resulting in hundreds of deaths of Aristide activists and bystanders

Rep. Maxine Waters, of the Congressional Black Caucus: "Haiti today is in total chaos. The interim government put in power by the U.S...is a complete failure....Human rights violations are commonplace throughout Haiti....(M)embers of President Aristide's government have been detained illegally, including former Prime Minister Yvon Neptune...As of February 18, there were over 700 political prisoners in Haiti's jails...most...without formal charges."

The United States sent marines to Haiti a year ago to force out of office a government that was democratically elected. The self-styled "rebels" committed massacres and rapes across the country, using weapons traced to U.S. stockpiles in the Dominican Republic.

The US installed the puppet regime of Gerard Latortue.

There have been vast cutbacks in the already impoverished education, health and other human services systems of the public sector.

The puppet regime represents the old landed and military elite and the sweat-shop owners and other business elite.

'A full-scale terror campaign is going on in Haiti - by the government, against the people; by the rich, against the poor; by those trained and funded by the U.S. and guarded by the U.N., and against the mass movement called Lavalas - the cleansing flood - that Aristide promised would someday bring justice for the poor of Haiti'.

I asked my bank to send $180, by telegraphic transfer, to a charity in the Philippines. I explained that I would meet all bank charges. I was told that the total bank charges would be $77 (£39 sterling). The total cost to me was $180 plus $77.

It was 16 days before the charity was informed that the money had arrived.

The banks involved have now charged $92 dollars for the transaction. The Philippine National Bank appears to have imposed an extra charge of $15.

"When the Christians were in danger of being overrun, they called on the Syrians for help.

Afghanistan - worse than ever

Life expectancy today is approximately 44.5 years.

Only 25 percent of the population has access to clean drinking water.

Abduction and trafficking in children is now a rapidly growing threat, with the most common forms of trafficking being child prostitution, forced labor, slavery, servitude and the removal of body organs.

Only 14 percent of women are literate.

An estimated 10 million scattered throughout the country have been responsible for disabling hundreds of thousands of Afghans.

One in every three people is either a refugee or an “internally displaced person.”

A survey of women in Kabul found that 98 percent met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD, major depression or severe anxiety.

More than 61 percent of children are not going to school in at least nine provinces. In ten provinces, more than 80 percent of girls are not enrolled in school.

In July 1979, President Carter signed a directive providing clandestine assistance to the Islamic fundamentalist forces. This was six months before the USSR invaded.

Brzezinski in a 1998 interview explained, “We didn’t push the Russians to intervene, but we consciously increased the probability that they would.... Regret what? That secret operation was an excellent idea. It had the effect of drawing the Russians into the Afghan trap. You want me to regret that?”

Carter-Brzezinski and the Reagan administration, during the 1980s, promoted Islamic fundamentalism to undermine the Soviet Union.

The UN study points out that during “the phase of the Cold War that stretched between 1979 and 1989, the Mujahideen groups received about $7 billion in military and economic aid from the US and some other western countries.” In this same period, the war created 5 million Afghan refugees.

The years following the US invasion witnessed "the majority of Afghans living in heightened states of both fear and want.” This era has seen an expansion of narco-warlordism and the opium trade. It is estimated that in 2003, Afghanistan produced three-quarters of the world illicit opium, and officials warn that the country could become “a narco-terror state in the future.”

Since 1992, approximately 75 percent of the ancient artifacts belonging to the National Museum in Kabul have been smuggled out of the country.

The current Afghan reality: foreign imperialist occupation, political power in the hands of mafia-like warlords; unspeakable conditions for broad masses of the population.

"The man accused of supplying the dynamite used in the al-Qaeda train bombings in Madrid was in possession of the private telephone number of the head of Spain’s Civil Guard bomb squad, it emerged yesterday."

Emilio Suárez Trashorras, who reportedly supplied the dynamite used in the bombs, had the number of Juan Jesús Sánchez Manzano, the head of Tedax.

Señor Suárez Trashorras and two other men implicated in the bombings have already been identified as people who were working for the police.

Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez has confirmed allegations first published in the Spanish daily El Pais on December 13 that the former Popular Party (PP) government led by José María Aznar ordered the destruction of computer records dealing with the key period between the Madrid train bombings and the general election held three days later that it lost to Zapatero’s Socialist Workers Party (PSOE). Mathias Broeckers published an article on the 'telepolis' website March 13, with the headline: "Al Qaeda, ETA - Gladio?"

Broeckers sees a link between the Madrid bombs and the bomb attack on the central station of Bologna in August 1980.

Between 1969 and 1980, 245 people were killed in bomb attacks on central stations, trains and frequented squares in Italy.

Fifteen years after the Bologna incident, the culprits were caught. Two fascists were arrested and sentenced, along with two members of the Italian secret services, as well as the head of the P-2 lodge, Licio Gelli, and his aide, CIA agent Francesco Pazienza. The Gladio network began to be revealed.

The Gladio network, reportedly run by the CIA and other security services, used the Strategy of Tension to terrorize the Italian population and advance a fascist agenda.

A Channel Four documentary reported that it is now a widely held theory that the US government was the brains behind 9 11.

The Daily Mail's TV critic Christopher Matthew on Friday, the 10th September 2004, said that it is "a widely held theory that the US Government conspired to make 9/11 happen – and indeed may have engineered it." The evidence offered by the programme, he added, "was compelling, and the people who supported it were clearly no fantasists."

Mrs. Ellen Mariani, whose husband died on Flight 175, is using racketeering laws to get the Bush administration prosecuted for deliberately standing down America's air defences in the full knowledge that the attacks were about to happen.

The Channel Four documentary made reference to the 'Project for a New American Century' and to the right-wingers' need for a new Pearl Harbour.

Kevin Toolis, in the New Statesman on 14th June 2004, wrote about 'The Terrorist Professors'.

Toolis says that America's military aggression is driven by the doctrine of 'counter-terrorism'.
Resistance to occupation is described as terrorism. Palestinian resistance to Jewish occupation is 'terrorism'.

Academics who study terrorism are often promoting the views of the right-wing security services.

Toolis writes: "As an academic discipline, counter-terrorism is still exclusively devoted to sub-state groups... ignoring state terror." If a Palestinian kills Israelis with a crude home-made suicide bomb on behalf of Hamas or Hezbollah that is 'terrorism'. But if the Israeli Defence Force wipes out several times as many Palestinians with state-of-the-art American-supplied missiles that is "legitimate self-defence against terrorism."

Toolis writes: "Almost all western counter-terrorist academic centres are closely linked to Israeli institutions such as the International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism." The executive director of this establishment is one Boaz Ganor, "a close political ally" of Binyamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu helped make counter-terrorism "the ideology of the Israeli State." Netanyahu and the American conservatives believe that the "interests of the Israeli State are identical to those of the western democracies."

After 9 11, says Toolis, "American neo-conservatives ... incorporated the Israeli counter-terrorist model into US foreign policy." The world is to be shaped to a Zionist-Jewish mould.

Mossad agents masquerading as 'art students' were living alongside the 9 11 'hijackers'

Bin Laden? It seems he has done work for the security services of the West. Tony Blair had to admit in Parliament in the aftermath of the attacks that no evidence of his guilt existed that would stand up in any court. .

Operation Gladio

Gladio: the idea was for the security services of the West to kill innocent people and then blame this on others. Gladio was about keeping the right-wing elite in power.

Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra stated, in sworn testimony:

'You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force ... the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security."

Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti revealed the existence of Gladio in 1991. Parliamentary investigations in Italy, Switzerland and Belgium have given us a little of the truth. The book "NATO's Secret Armies: Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe," by Daniele Ganser documents some of what we know so far.

Run by NATO and Washington, right-wing militias carried out acts of terrorism and electoral subversion states such as Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and West Germany.

A Pentagon document, Field Manual FM 30-31B, details the methods for launching terrorist attacks.

85 people were killed on Aug. 2, 1980 in the bombing of the Bologna train station. According to the Italian Senate, after its investigation in 2000, the bombers were later discovered to be "men inside Italian state institutions and ... men linked to the structures of United States intelligence."
The Bologna bomb was part of Gladio's "the strategy of tension" - fomenting fear to keep populations in thrall to "strong leaders" who will protect the nation from the ever-present terrorist threat.

The strategy of tension was also used by the CIA and its allies outside Europe. During the 1980s, right-wing death squads, trained and supplied by the United States, murdered tens of thousands of people in Central America. Indonesia's gestapo regiments were trained by the Pentagon...

Now in Iraq, the Pentagon seems to using terror tactics. Massive terror means that U.S. forces have to remain indefinitely.

"The Dirty War: The testimony of a former officer of the special forces of the Algerian army, 1992-2000", by Habib Souaidia.

More than 150,000 Algerians have been slaughtered in recent years.

"My name is Habib Souaidia" writes the author of The Dirty War. "I served as an officer in the special forces of the Algerian Army... I have seen my colleagues set fire to a boy of 15, who burned like a living torch.

"I have seen soldiers slaughtering civilians and blaming 'the terrorists.'

"I have seen senior officers murdering in cold blood simple people who were suspected of Islamic activities. I have seen officers torturing Islamic activists to death. I have seen too many things. I cannot remain silent. These are sufficient reasons for breaking my silence."

Habib Souaidia's book is the first to expose the part the army has played in the terror.

In October 1988, demonstrations took place in Algiers.

500 young demonstrators were killed army bullets.

The Islamic Salvation Front was set up in March 1989.

Many people were tired of the corruption of the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN), which had ruled the country since it won its independence from France.

The FIS won support from many of the poor and performed well in local elections.

The army did not want the Islamists to take over.

In 1992 the FIS won victory in the first round of the general election.

The army stepped in to cancel the elections.

The terror beagan; both sides were apparently involved.

Habib Souaidia relates the part the army played in the terror.

"It happened one night in March, 1993," he writes. "After I finished my shift I was summoned to my commanding officer, Major Daoud. He ordered me to take my people to guard a truck on its way to one of the villages. I went outside and I saw the truck. I peeked inside and saw the silhouettes of dozens of commando fighters from one of the special units. They were carrying knives and grenades. I was told that they were on their way to a 'special mission.'

"I drove behind the truck until it stopped in the village of Dawar Azatariya where the inhabitants were suspected of supporting the FIS movement. I was asked to remain with my men outside the village. Two hours later the truck came back. One of the officers took a blood-stained knife that he held near his throat, making a sweeping side to side motion. I didn't need any additional signs to understand what had happened in the village. Two days later there were headlines in the Algerian press: 'Islamic attack in Dawar Azatariya. Dozens killed in the massacre.' I couldn't believe my eyes. I felt that I had been an accomplice to a terrible crime."

Soldiers arrested a 15-year-old cigarette seller. Lieutenant Abdelhak ordered him to kneel, poured fuel over him, pulled a lighter out of his pocket and set the boy on fire.

Habib: "Thus far more than 150,000 people have been killed, and those responsible for this crime are the generals who head the army. They are fighting to defend their rule and the enormous amount of property they have accumulated."

The programme asserted that the complexity of the attack and the characteristics of the explosions indicated training and planning beyond the capacity of loyalist forces acting unaided and strongly implied that the security forces in the North had likely helped the attackers. Pointing to a covert unit of the British Army in Castledillon, the programme makers suggested that the attack had been allowed to happen in order to protect British Army agents in the UVF. The allegations revolved around Army Captain Robert Nairac. “Hidden Hand” stated that McConnell, Boyle and “the Jackal” were controlled by Nairac. Hanna, meanwhile, was allegedly run separately by the British Army from Lisburn and 3 Brigade HQ in Lurgan....

"Colin Wallace was framed for manslaughter in 1981 by the British judicial system in reprisal for his exposure of black propaganda used against non-military and political opponents of army policy and a plot from within the MI5 intelligence services to bring down the Wilson Labour government. He also exposed child abuse at the Kincora Boys’ Home, demanded it be stopped, and protested when he realised that the intelligence services were blackmailing a leading loyalist involved in the abuse to ensure his assistance in their efforts at manipulating the loyalist gangs.
Wallace’s conviction was not quashed until 1996."

Sir John Stevens' report on his third investigation into matters of collusion in Northern Ireland:

The report has found that a covert army unit, the Force Research Unit (FRU), commanded by Brigadier Gordon Kerr, colluded with Loyalist hit-squads to kill Catholics in the 1980s and 1990s. The FRU passed information to Loyalist terrorists, mainly through Brian Nelson, an agent who infiltrated the Ulster Defence Association. Many of the victims had no involvement with terrorism. Details passed to the Loyalist hit-squads included those of Pat Finucane. Brigadier Kerr is still serving with the British army.

John Stephens said that he was obstructed throughout his enquiries. He said that the collusion ranged from the wilful failure to keep records, the absence of accountability, the withholding of intelligence and evidence, through to the extreme of agents being involved in murder.

J. Edgar Hoover was fully aware that the Ward circle included many extremely well known Americans and girls such as Suzy Chang and Mariella Novotny who had been bedded by President John F. Kennedy.

Ward was prosecuted on "trumped up charges of living on 'immoral earnings'."

On the last day of his trial, Ward died.

Rice-Davies escaped prosecution.

It is known that MI5 ran a brothel in Church Street in Kensington throughout much of the 1950's and early 1960's for the use of visiting dignitaries, diplomats and intelligence officers. While for those too important to visit such an establishment certain discreet gentlemen were called upon to provide young female or male company directly to the VIP hotel bedroom.

Dr Stephen Ward had an MI5 controller, Keith Wagstaffe (cover-name 'Woods').

Anatoli Golitsin, a spy who defected from the KGB, claimed that Hugh Gaitskell was murdered in 1963 so that Harold Wilson, a 'KGB agent', could become leader of the Labour Party.

Was Wilson working for Russia or Israel?

Harold Wilson was President of the Board of Trade from 1947-51. The few people who could get permission from the Board of Trade to import heavily rationed raw materials or finished goods were in a good position to become vastly rich. Among the lucky few who got licenses were Montague Meyer, Joe Kagan and Rudy Sternberg. Kagan and Sternberg later became peers. Meyer gave Wilson a consultancy which took him on frequent trips to Moscow and Eastern Europe.

After the 'mysterious' death of Hugh Gaitskell, Wilson became Labour leader and eventually Prime Minister. Harold Wilson's 'private office' was funded in secret by a wealthy group which included Lord Goodman, Sir Samuel Fisher, and Rudy Sternberg.

In the 1970's, Private Eye began to receive information of a possible link between Wilson and the Israeli secret service and the KGB. In connection with alleged plots, the names of various people were handed to Private Eye.

Labour MP Ian Mikardo had at one time partnered Leslie Paisner in a business that traded with East Germany. Mikardo's pair in the House of Commons was Barnaby Drayson who worked for Rudy Sternberg, as did Wilfred Owen MP who had resigned after being revealed as a spy for Czechoslovakia. Montague Meyer, it turned out, was the man who had bought up much of the timber felled in Tanganyika during Labour's ill-fated groundnut scheme.

Then there was Labour MP Edward Short 'who had been in the habit of receiving bundles of banknotes from T Dan Smith', the city boss of Newcastle and one time partner of Eric Levine.

Kagan was a frequent visitor to Downing Street. He was also on friendly terms with the station chief of the Russian KGB. After being questioneded by the police about tax and currency offences he eventually 'fled' to Israel, where perhaps his real allegiance lay.

Sir Rudy Sternberg was also under investigation by the security services.

What may have stopped Private Eye from finally getting at the truth was the intervention of the Jewish businessman James Goldsmith, a friend of PM Wilson's personal secretary, Marcia Williams. Marcia was also a friend of Kagan. Private Eye had mistakenly claimed that Goldsmith had been present at a lunch given by John Aspinall, on the day after the disappearance of Lord Lucan. Goldsmith began criminal libel proceedings against Private Eye. Patrick Marnham, in his brilliant book "Trail of Havoc: In the Steps of Lord Lucan", writes that Goldsmith was "effectively silencing the only newspaper which migh t have made headway with the ....allegations."

Goldsmith later became a lord. Sir Joseph Kagan was later imprisoned.

But the possible links between Labour and Israel's secret service may not have ended with Wilson. Private Eye began to take an interest in Robert Maxwell, the chief fund raiser for Labour. Maxwell received a peerage, mysteriously disappeared, and 'his body' was buried with great honour in Israel. It was assumed by many that he was a top Israeli spy.

And what of Tony Blair. Private Eye has pointed out that Blair's chief fund raiser is Lord Levy, a man with strong links to Israel. Blair's chief foreign policy adviser was Sir David Manning........

Romania - corrupt American colony?

42 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. Six of the ten regions in Europe with the lowest GDP are in Romania. This is the double the number recorded two years earlier.

Forty-two percent of the population works in agriculture. Only half of Romania’s roads are paved. One out of every three households lacks running water.

Unemployment is increasing. The official unemployment rate has continued to rise in recent years, reaching 9 percent in 2003. In some districts, one out of every two workers is jobless.

Recently, the Natase government issued a decree nullifying a 400 million euro debt owed by two private oil refineries in east Romania. The chief proprietor of the formerly nationalised refineries is Corneliu Iacobov.

According to Salzmann: "Managed by Iacobov, together with other party members and business associates, the refineries were deliberately driven to the verge of ruin, denationalised and sold at far below their worth. They were then turned into shelf companies from which Iacobov stood to benefit."

"Last year, Romania’s European Integration Minister Hildegard Puwak was forced to resign after channeling funds earmarked for the promotion of the EU into private companies run by her husband and son. According to one recent inquiry, 75 percent of Romanians consider that corruption has increased since the last years of the despised Ceausescu regime."

THE BALI BOMB AND THE MILITARY

On 12 October 2002, bombs exploded near the Sari Club and the Padi Club in the heart of Kuta, in Bali. 202 people were killed and several hundred were injured.

On Oct. 16 Indonesian police arrested a former Air Force officer who confessed to building the bomb. This officer was later released.

According to a news story in the Sydney Morning Herald, November 2, 2002, Indonesian security services may have handled the Bali bomb. "Some time around the 30 October 2002, senior officers in the Indonesian military HQ gave a piece of information to a military attache from a Western embassy in Indonesia -the source of explosive used in the October 12 bombing in Bali was the head of the counter-terrorism unit with the army's special forces." The father-in-law of the officer concerned is Hendropriyono, Indonesia's spy chief.

Allegedly, Kuwaiti citizen Omar Al-Faruq played a part in the Bali bomb plot. Al-Faruq was arrested in Bogor on June 5, 2002 and handed over to US authorities. Former Indonesian State Intelligence Coordinating Board (BAKIN) chief A.C. Manulang was quoted by Tempo as saying that Al-Faruq is a CIA-recruited agent.

The airline manifest of Garuda airlines shows that at least two generals from Jakarta visited Bali three days before the bombings and that they returned to Jakarta one day before the Sari Club was blown up. This was confirmed by armed forces chief General Sutarto, who claimed that General Djaja Suparman was on vacation, while General Ryamizard Riyacudu, chief of staff, was said to have gone to Bali for health reasons. General Suparman is allegedly one of the generals behind certain 'Moslem' militias. He reportedly set up militias to counter student demonstrations in 1998. One of these militias, Pram Swarkasa, allegedly became Laskar Jihad.

Bomb explosions in Indonesia have have often been linked to the military. A bomb at the Attorney General's office in Jakarta in July 2000 went off one hour after Tommy Suharto had been interrogated by the police. The bombs were reportedly traced back to the army and a former member of Suharto's guard.

A spate of explosions in the capital Jakarta in 2000 included a huge car-bomb blast in the underground parking lot of the Jakarta Stock Exchange. Two members of Kopassus (army special forces) were convicted and jailed for that act of terrorism.

It was reported in the Jakarta Post that convicted Bali bomber Ali Imron had been seen, in 2004, having a Starbucks coffee in a plush Jakarta shopping mall in the company of top police official Brig. Gen. Gorries Mere. Imron apparently also visited the Hard Rock Cafe.

After Amrozi had been arrested for his part in the Bali Bomb, National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar had a face to face meeting with him. Bachtiar laughed, shook hands and posed for photographs with Amrozi.

The United States ranked 28th out of 40 countries in mathematical literacy (NYT, Dec. 12, 2004).

Twenty percent of Americans think the sun orbits the earth. Seventeen percent believe the earth revolves around the sun once a day (The Week, Jan. 7, 2005).

"The International Adult Literacy Survey...found that Americans with less than nine years of education 'score worse than virtually all of the other countries'" (Jeremy Rifkin's superbly documented book The European Dream: How Europe's Vision of the Future Is Quietly Eclipsing the American Dream, p.78).

American workers are so ignorant and lack so many basic skills that American businesses spend $30 billion a year on remedial training (NYT, Dec. 12, 2004).

"The European Union leads the U.S. in...the number of science and engineering graduates; public research and development (R&D) expenditures; and new capital raised" (The European Dream, p.70).

"Europe surpassed the United States in the mid-1990s as the largest producer of scientific literature" (The European Dream, p.70).

Nevertheless, Congress cut funds to the National Science Foundation. The agency will issue 1,000 fewer research grants this year (NYT, Dec. 21, 2004).

Foreign applications to U.S. grad schools declined 28 percent last year.

Foreign student enrollment on all levels fell for the first time in three decades, but increased greatly in Europe and China. Last year Chinese grad-school graduates in the U.S. dropped 56 percent, Indians 51 percent, South Koreans 28 percent (NYT, Dec. 21, 2004). We're not the place to be anymore.

The World Health Organization "ranked the countries of the world in terms of overall health performance, and the U.S. [was]...37th."

In the fairness of health care, we're 54th. "The irony is that the United States spends more per capita for health care than any other nation in the world" (The European Dream, pp.79-80). Pay more, get lots, lots less.

"The U.S. is the only developed country in the world that does not provide health care for all their citizens" (The European Dream, p.80).

Lack of health insurance coverage causes 18,000 unnecessary American deaths a year. (That's six times the number of people killed on 9/11.) (NYT, Jan. 12, 2005.)

"U.S. childhood poverty now ranks 22nd, or second to last, among the developed nations. Only Mexico scores lower" (The European Dream, p.81).

Twelve million American families--more than 10 percent of all U.S. households--"continue to struggle, and not always successfully, to feed themselves." Families that "had members who actually went hungry at some point last year" numbered 3.9 million (NYT, Nov. 22, 2004).

They also run Internet credit card scams, deal in counterfeit currencies and launder money, traffic narcotics and weapons, run gambling and protection rackets, manage prostitution and sex slave industries, and steal gasoline and other fuels.

The Saudi newspaper al-Watan reports that the Iranian authorities have dismantled an Israeli arms smuggling network. Iranian sources said the weapons were smuggled from Iraq with the help of Mossad, as well as the American and British forces in the southern Iraqi cities of Basra and Amara.
