Today’s voting machines have obviously been programmed to be insecure, but that does not mean that they cannot be programmed, and verified, to be secure.
There’s nothing inherently secure about paper ballots, as numerous elections, including this one, have demonstrated. Paper ballots can be counted incorrectly, lost, “discovered”, and faked. Granted, electronic votes can do all of the above more quickly, but the programming can be verified by teams of experts beforehand, minimizing the need for corruptable people to do the counting.
