Reflecting upon her situation brings to mind the ease at which control can be exerted over the elected and unelected bureaucrats. In Mrs Hill’s case, if not for the estranged husbands acts of exposing her, future events could have taken a much more dastardly turn. That being, a method to control her by threats from unscrupulous individuals that would threaten exposure of her infractions, if she did not conform to their demands.
That brings me to the slush fund used to pay off alleged sexual misconduct of the members of our Governing body. One would have to assume that any payout, potential payout, or knowledge of an accusation could be used to manipulate the individuals. Yes, they hide it from the general public, however in today’s world of surveillance, there are no secrets and surely the higher ups within the chain of command are aware of these infractions. Therefore one must assume that the keys to their future decisions may well be manipulated by those in the know.
To resist the temptation of the 7 deadly sins is difficult for most, when given power, money, status and possibly provided opportunities, only those with the most moral of convictions can abstain. Surely this is a well known fact by those who may wish to compromise another. In Mrs Hill’s case we see the ease at which her career was ended, a notation to any that are controlled in such a manner. It only takes a leak of a photo or claim and presto, career over.
Although the general public is kept from knowing the participants, claim, payouts or details, we do know the structure exists. Therefore we must assume that those who have been provided this protection of secrecy, of the accusations of immoral behavior can easily be controlled. That this program must be ended and transparency be the rule. I would postulate that this program is not the only one of its type that hides the sins and secrets from the publics view, but one of many programs that can be used to control political behaviors. I would go so far as to say, one with a shaded past or compromising habits a much more likely candidate to be hired, elected, or promoted in the current administration as is.
