Gratitude is my formal argument against the death penalty, as well as how a punishment is awarded. If one can realize that the successes and missteps of others be it alive or moved on that they are intertwined with our ability to continue our evolution.
If indeed it is our mission to grow, mature and evolve into a higher state, every action generates the opportunity to do just that.
One may ask how can crime or evil deeds be looked at with Gratitude? In many ways, I will describe two, from every mistake comes the opportunity to learn and grow, not only for the doer, as well the victims. This growth comes from earning the wisdom of the event, how it is dealt with. The reactions and actions taken from an event as well as referencing the previous results as a guide for future actions and reactions to an event. All built atop one another in the process of growth. Therefore eye feel gratitude for all that has happened, both positive and negative for it has allowed me the opportunity to grow, to do good, to do better, to help another to grow, in the now and in the future when I have moved on. Some of our pasts worst mistakes have also taught us the most as well.
Therefore when punishments are administered, the objective should be one of how can both the victim and the doer grow. When the reaction of an event is to end a life, or put a soul in constant torment, does not afford the best possible growth although a stepping stone on the path of growth in itself. Inner Standing dictates that all future actions and reactions be based upon growth for all, that in itself binds us to the past and future.

Being able to grasp seizing prosperity for oneself has its cost to others, as Steiner described is something humanity must latch onto, Even through our sustenance of life, we take from other forms of life, for that we should be cognizant and thankful.
So much to ponder upon, when those neurons start firing?
