Kubrick was one of many directors to play with Tarot ideas.
Interestingly Nic Roeg was up for directing A Clockwork Orange with Mick Jagger playing the lead, but Kubrick who had been toying with the script for several years on hearing that another director was to take on the project suddenly decided to go ahead and direct the film himself. Perhaps it was the books Tarot references that attracted Kubrick to the project. Anthony Burgess (who owned six tarot decks) seems to have based the 3 * 7 chapter structure of A Clockwork Orange on the Tarot major arcana and Crowley’s 777 lighting flash zigzag path through the tree of life from Kether to Malchuth.

Roeg's interest in Tarot inspired films may have been come from his work on Performance. In 1968 Donald Cammell and Nic Roeg had co written and directed Performance starring Mick Jagger, another fools journey film. Cammell’s father knew Aleister Crowley had written a book on Crowley’s poetry.

Roeg went on to direct The Man Who Fell to Earth with Bowie in the lead role. This was during peak of Bowie's Crowley/Kabbalah period. (Jagger and Bowie had been into one another for a few years.)
A still from The Man Who Fell to Earth was used on the Station to Station album cover the following year.

In the scene where Wendy hits Jack with the bat, watch Jack's hand gestures. First he makes the 'A-ok' hand symbol where you connect the index finger to the thumb, leaving the other three fingers raised. This is a 666, because each of the three loose fingers connecting to the enclosed circle looks like a 6. After that, he makes a satanic horns symbol. And lastly, he mentions May 1st, which is a date some have said is a satanic holiday. The Shining is also said to have begun filming on May 1st, 1978.

When Jack sees the naked woman in room 237's bathroom, he is like the proverbial 'horny goat'. I think Jack is definitely portrayed as being like satan or overtaken by satan in the movie. He becomes more bestial as things progress.

I have another find from 'The Shining'. In the infamous 'twins in the hallway' scene, when we see the flashes of their dead bodies, there is an upturned chair on the left side of the screen which on the surface, simply indicates that a physical struggle took place. But the chair is very carefully positioned to make a triangle/pyramid shape. Check the scene out again to see it. I'm not sure what it means, but I absolutely do think it's supposed to be symbolic of something.

Also, Kubrick uses a lot of the 'all seeing eye' symbolism(yes, it does represent satan/counterfeit God). For instance, when Danny covers his eyes when finding the twins, he slowly lets his hands part and slide off his face, leaving only his left eye exposed during one shot. The left eye and left side are symbolic of evil and the occult path. Some of the other instances of the all seeing eye in a pyramid(off the top of my head) can also be seen in the EWS poster(Alice's eye), the Clockwork Orange poster, and one of the still frames of Dave in 2001 during the light show before he reaches the bedroom. Thanks for the comments Eleleth...I will look into what you've said here. I have been almost straight jacketed, what with trying to keep a sequence in an arranged order (most of the time)...and I don't think that is necessary or what would've been intended. The tarot is relatively new to me and I have often regarded it as mainly a parlour game (which is a total disservice)...the idea that the symbolism on the cards goes back to very ancient origins, was initially something I had overlooked. Appreciate what you've said, as I do respect your work...and that's not something I say very readily or openly, so you can take that as a massive compliment. Sorry, what do you mean by 'I need a better publicist'...is that in the sense of getting this stuff more widely read and promoted/distributed?

Ziegler's bathtub is actually meant to be the Chariot if you look at it closely.

Watch when Dr. Bill walks into his office at about 20 minutes in--it's the Hebrew letter for the Justice (Adjustment) card, the next card in the sequence. Note that Kubrick places Domino as Strength in the 11th position, conformable to Crowley's Thoth Tarot.

The Hermit in EWS: Alice's reference to the "Naval Officer" is in reference to the "spermatozoon" on the Hermit card. "Loaded with mayonnaise, just the way you like it."

Kubrick has cleverly swapped the Devil and the Hierophant. Szandor should be the Devil, but he comes in the place of the Hierophant in the EWS sequence.

I've not seen that particular film, but I know the quote very well, which funnily enough, almost makes me feel as though I have seen the film multiple times!

Maybe just maybe...the exchange between them (re: the truth) is really being aimed at us! We want the truth (about life, our existence, where we are headed etc)...but in the main, perhaps most wouldn't be able to handle it. (like Floyd in 2001 having to concoct a cover story, to spare the shock of the masses).

Obviously...I'm not referring to the film in a literal sense, but the subliminal and the overall 'sea of media messages' (of which this film is a part) that we inhabit.

Hi again. You most likely have already considered this, but I got to thinking about the famous line from the film A Few Good Men; where Tom Cruise's character says to Jack Nicholson's character, "I want the truth!" to which Jack's character replies, "You can't handle the truth!". Interesting being that Cruise and Nicholson are the main characters, and the 'fools', in two of Kubrick's well-known films.

Awww...you guys are so generous, I appreciate the kind words, I truly do. The video aspect is probably the way to go, but I am not particularly well versed in producing video to explain myself. It has been a labour explaining this stuff in text & graphic form and it has taken me years to acquire all this information and only recently have I been able to put it into some kind of coherent form. Inside my head, it's all quite straight forward (although you never stop learning and I'm not always right etc)...putting it down, so that another human being can understand it and follow, has been the greatest challenge.

There is plenty more to come guys, so hopefully I'll see you all around.

Thanks for the feedback everyone...I think I'm a bit needy like that and what I have received by way of 'feedback' so far, has inspired, spurred me on and increased my output. Again...I thank you all.

I've still gotta add a few things...I need a dvd copy of FMJ for ripping out the pics etc. There is good one in FMJ...when Pyle & Hartman are on the assault ladder and Pyle gets berated...A few people go over the ladder while this is going on...and I just kinda knew there might be a 'Moses' who climbs over...so I carefully looked (names on backs of shirts) and yup there is a Moses climbing 'Jacobs ladder'. Will add when I get the disc and add the other missing bits etc.
