The smalltown video store I used to work at had a copy of Eraserhead on VHS in the comedy section. I used to take it out all the time as a kid, and no matter what time of day it was, the industrial soundscape always lulled me to sleep. I'd sometimes wake up for certain parts, most times not, and every time wondered what happened and why it was over so soon. I don't think I could ever pinpoint when I finally saw every piece of the whole, but it sure stuck with me more than any other movie.
I would go on to work at that video store in 2001, and found out the reason it was filed under Comedy was because the dumb boss lady I worked for had zero knowledge of cinema. She purchased the store in the late 80's from an obviously cooler original owner, who made sure there were David Lynch movies available for impressionable minds like my own. My co-workers told me it was shelved with the comedies as a way to make fun of our clueless boss, and nobody ever said anything about it to her.
I also got to confirm a suspicion of mine with the help of the store computer, that I was the one to have rented that tape more than anybody else. I have my dear old Frenchie dad to thank for turning me on to the movie at such a young age. He would often play Fats Waller albums in the house while he worked, and told me it was because of Eraserhead that he got into the music.
Thanks to the stock of other nearby video outlets, I managed to see pretty much every David Lynch movie there was by age 12. Out of all of them Twin Peaks was the one I cared for the least. I saw Fire Walk With Me first and really enjoyed that and the pilot for the show, but I preferred the international ending over watching the entire series. I had the same problem a lot of people had with the second season, and thought it too silly.
Boy howdy did that all change when I took in enough of your blog. Revisiting all of Twin Peaks was a blast after following enough of your research, so that when The Return came around I could not wait to see it. Now that it's over and likely done for good, I find myself wishing there was just a little bit more. I even went ahead and made a playlist for the soundtrack to what I'd call an ideal "missing" episode. We've been listening to a lot of these songs for months now, and coming up with imagined scenes to try to fit with the themes has been such a source of great pleasure that I had just had to share it with you. One for the road.

I included the entire "Hair" short from Body Bags since that was the only video I could find with the track "Long Beautiful Hair" in it. The commercials are the worst when it comes to the flow, so I highly suggest considering getting an adblocker.

re read my way back to 2009 in your most recent absence. i fully understand your need for departure from this line of thinking, as i found myself waking from dreams filled with stanley kubricks ugly face, my dream state suggesting he os a bloodliner and thats the real reason he is lauded. these zion spacemonkey directors can pull off the allegory amd allusion blindfolded (get it?), its just the medium of preference for them.

personally ive never seen a kubrick film i enjoyed, and def never one id watch twice. thats subjective and purely instinctual though. generally they make me feel sick

Echoing the above... It is good to see you post about the new TP. I have only watched parts 1 & 2, but I had to come here and check if this would pull you from your retirement. If the Sync forum gets up and running again I will be exploring the series there.

Hi, glad to see you back as well! There is so much in new TP, one does not know where to start from. The thing on my mind regarding parts 1-4 at this moment, is that Vegas was picked because it really is a mirage in the middle of a desert, just like Dougie, who I think is a tulpa. The purple world scene had the same kind of effect that the lodge in episode #29 had, it will be talked about for a long time. Now are we going to see Jeffries? Could he be the millionaire? The box is in NYC after all.

Glad to see you back in even a limited capacity. I have also watched the first three episodes of the new series and was very curious what your thoughts were. So far it doesn't really "feel" like Twin Peaks so much as a tying together of all of the running themes of Lynch's work. I'm glad to see you make all the Eraserhead connections. That is a film I never understood nor liked, but I'm certain it means something important that is just out of my ability to interpret.
