I knew I remembered "Mandalay" had been coming up for me last year, after revisiting the sequel to Dogville by Lars von Trier, "Manderlay," and how I kept confusing it with "Manderley" from Hitchcock's Rebecca. Manderlay is a pretty well organized flick. I think that's one I can safely recommend. It has the same Bowie music used ever so thematically like in the first one, and John Hurt again as narrator. Thanks for being on the same page Horseloverphat .I'm the first one who likes to crack jokes on my own account, but this dude wasn't even funny. My first impression was as though some drunkard vomited on my head...
I hardly ever post comments on line ( about 3 years since the last one), and the main reason why I made the comment on your blog ( beside showing the appreciation for your excellent work) is because It's obvious that you are going through a lot of mental anguish writing about extremely heavy subject.
Being immersed -ALONE-in this ''subject'' for a long period of time is extremely unhealthy. I should know. 20 years ago there was no internet. The informative material on MPD/DID and sexual abuse of children was scarce and difficult to obtain.For seven long years I was completely immersed in this nightmare . I don't want to bother you ( or myself) with the details, but after the 7 years of the uninterrupted emotional roller coaster ride...and my constant pointing of the finger at the elephant in the room...and the willful ignorance of the ''community''..,I had to quit. I've realized that my effort was useless, I've realized that I'm not helping anyone, and that if I stick around for another year,that I'll simple die.
What I'm trying to say is; don't worry too much about ''opening the eyes'' of many people. This type of subject overwhelming majority simply doesn't want to know about.
You have very sharp intellect and I enjoy reading your thoughts... but please take care of yourself. Don't push yourself too hard. Nothing is worth losing your health&sanity.

Both Laurence Fishburne & Sam Neill starred in the dreadful Event Horizon movie, which was all about a (now typically phallic shaped) spaceship entering a black hole. It has connections to gouged eyes, a scene where they are "pulling the ship's rear section into a black hole", etc., definitely following on this theme.

I'm sure there will be more in there, but its not a movie that I ever want to watch again ;-)

Been following the entries on this blog for a while now, on and off, and am amazed at the genius of connecting the dots.

I myself have noticed such weird imagery in Italian horror movies that you may not have picked up on:

For example, Dario Argento. I'll mention some odd parallels from Opera:

An up and coming ingenue is stalked by a maniac. She has traumatic flashbacks after the attacks: she is tied-up, molested, forced to witness the murders of her friends, then released.

In one scene she is put in a glass cage, in the fashion of mannequins (that stand all around her). This puts me in mind of the twisted fashion world of The Neon Demon, as you mentioned.

SPOILERS: The killer is eventually revealed to be her mother's lover, and possibly her father, though not confirmed.

The entire movie is about her disassociation from reality. The last scene (cut originally, for unknown reasons) has her going into a childlike state, rolling in the grass. She releases a trapped lizard. She communes with Nature, as an escape from the present "reality".

There are similar things many other of his films including Phenomena, set in Switzerland, that features another childlike female as the protagonist. This one features sleepwalking and a creepy MKUltra-esque sequence.

Totally understand vJ, totally. Withnail is a film that I know only TOO well, I've seen it many, many times and primarily because it always amused me, which isn't easy to do! Monty, as much as a colossal faggot that he is, is the star of the film. All those lines are familiar to me. Obviously it's heavy on camp gayness...Monty/Griffiths (old queen), druggy Danny (probably a queer actor), E Grant (very likely queer) he's currently promo-ing the Ealing stuff 'Lavender Uphill Mob etc., McGann (don't know, but he had to take a few, imo), Elphick (probably like McGann). So, yeah overt gayness, but I hadn't quite thought about it to the extent you describe, you make valid points. I think Monty chasing down Marwood (I) is likely based on Robinson's own experience. Ken Russell (imo) was a giant queen, always came across that way. I noted Monty also used the 'mauve' term too, the film was literally 'cottaging with Withnail and Monty' lol. I was probably as fond of this film as you are/were, truth be told. It made me smile just reading those lines, I'm sure you'll understand. :)

Withnail has been on my mind recently, just due to Monty (Griffiths) and his link to James Corden, they were in a successful stage play together, a few years. Corden is clearly gay, note my Tango advert stuff on this post. Corden was in some very, very suspect 'gay heavy' Tango ads, marking him as another Agent Orange (fruit etc). He's in the 'Confused' ads at the moment, where all the lights switch from 'orange/amber' to green. :)

The early scenes in Psycho are set in 'Phoenix' too! I never really liked Halloween, I prefer The Fog, I loved that when I was a child. That intro with the old sea dog telling the eerie tale by the camp-fire is perfect. The music, the timing, the old man's voice and phrasing, everything. Not just with Uncle Monty, but Withnail is obviously homosexually attracted to 'I', he gets into bed with him, and in the scene where 'I' confronts Withnail about the lies he has told to Monty About 'I' being in love with Withnail, and Withnail says 'sorry, I just said the first thing that popped into my head', it was obviously something he wishes were true. After 'I' leaves, Withnail recites Hamlet's 'what a piece of work is man' monologue and his last line is 'man delights not me...no, nor woman neither...nor woman neither'.

In fact the central situation where Withnail 'panders' 'I' to Monty is echoed in the film where Withnail leaves 'I' to be (symbolically) buggered by an aggressive male - first at the pub when the large Irishman shouts 'ponce!' at 'I' and he goes into the toilet terrified and sees 'I fuck arses' written on the wall above the urinal, and thinks 'who fucks arses? Maybe HE fucks arses!'; when the Irishman approaches Withnail and 'I', Withnail says 'I don't know what my friend has done to upset you, but I think you should both step outside and resolve it', virtually 'handing over' 'I' to the thug/'rapist'; and secondly, in the field when the bull, on heat, runs towards them and Withnail leaps over the wall, leaving 'I' alone in the bull's path.

Bruce Robinson, the author and director of W&I, was himself an (effeminately good-looking) young actor, he appeared in Zefirelli's Romeo and Juliet as Benvolio and in Ken Russell's The Music Lovers as Tchaikovsky's young 'assistant'.
