In his book Ukraine at the Crossroads (2015), former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov writes: «Essentially, Ukraine has never been a mono-national state. The Donetsk and Luhansk regions were different from the Kharkiv region, and the Zaporizhia and Dnepropetrovsk regions were different from the Sumy and Chernigov regions. And I am not even going to talk about Galicia and Transcarpathia. Ukraine as a unitary state is a constant source of conflict» . The fact that the unitary state structure of Ukraine has started to create a permanent civil conflict is confirmed by recent events. Yet the Ukrainian authorities are still obstinately insisting that «Ukraine was, is, and will be a unitary state»…

The Situation in Transcarpathia Intensifies

Fears that Kiev is in a position to try and repeat the ‘Donbass Scenario’ in Transcarpathia do not seem to be without grounds. Consequently, those behind the Carpathian Mountains are talking about federalisation increasingly emphatically… The demands of the Rusyns and Hungarians in Transcarpthia are based on a solid legal foundation, and they share a common goal and a common threat. The common threat is Ukraine, and the situation is intensifying. There have been repeated instances of the destruction of Ukrainian state symbols in Uzhhorod and Mukachevo, explosions in the local offices of PrivatBank, and demonstrations by Transcarpathian residents against mobilisation for war – everything is leading to the fact that the issue of granting Transcarpathia the status of an autonomous federal entity could come to a head…

Carpathian Hungarians Demand Autonomy

For a long time the fate of ethnic Hungarians in neighboring countries has long been a delicate issue for Hungary. The Victor Orban's government has allowed many of them to obtain Hungarian citizenship and vote in Hungarian elections. «Hungarians of the Carpathian Basin are entitled to dual citizenship, community rights and autonomy», the Hungarian Prime Minister said on May 10, «This is the stance we will represent in international politics.» According to him, the issue of ethnic Hungarians was especially topical due to the situation in neighboring Ukraine, where around 200,000 ethnic Hungarians live, who are entitled to Hungarian citizenship and also the right to self-administration. «This is our clear expectation from the new Ukraine which is taking shape now», Orban said…

Transcarpathia under Threat of Imminent Invasion

According to Romanian media reports, Bucharest will have to guarantee security for Romanians in Bukovina and Odessa. If the situation in Ukraine gets worse, it will have to deploy troops in the areas of their residence. The Transcarpathian Hungarians also raise the issue of their security. It is reported that Budapest keeps the option of bringing troops into the Transcarpathian region (Zakarpatie) on the table… Carpathian Rusyns will not stay idle, they have always remembered their Russian roots, and they see their chance of survival only as part of common Russian civilization. If Hungarians swing over to Budapest, then the majority of Rusyns will move to Moscow and Kiev hoping for an alliance. There are already voices raised among them saying Transcarpathia choose Kiev in case West Ukraine gets separated…

Hungary to Grab Transcarpatia

Budapest clearly intensifies its Ukraine’s policy. The target is Transcarpatia province (Zakarpattia Oblast) of Ukraine, where over 150 thousand Hungarians form the largest ethnic minority (12% of whole population of the province). Over 90% of them consider Hungarian as their native language. I recall the early 1990s, the childlike gleefulness of Ukrainians over independence. Pretty soon Ukraine found itself alone facing the geopolitical challenges never surfaced before when it had been part of the more powerful state entity – the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Since the declaration of independence the Ukraine’s western neighbors started to pay special interest to the territories of former Ukrainian Soviet Republic: Romania eyed Bukovyna, Hungary – Transcarpatia. While the Ukrainian nationalists countered the “Moskali” (Russians) threat, all territorial losses occurred in the west…
