Winners of Wiki loves Africa

Does anyone have a rough approximation of how and when to see the winners of "Wiki loves Africa"? If I'm the winner, will I get notified? In what way?

DVIDS account holder?

Is there someone with a DVIDS account who could download a better version of File:RRDF floating pier near Gaza April 2024.webp? I got it from Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS), a Department of Defense download site, but they require account creation in order to download the highest quality image. Art Exhibit I curated

I curated an art exhibit that included the work of artist Lewis de Soto. I see that Lewis has no images on his Wiki page. I have images I took of his Paranirvana artwork from the exhibit. If I get permission from Lewis, would I be able to upload those artwork images I took? Thank you.

@SFnativeAKM: We would need him to send permission as described at COM:VRT. In particular, we'd need a specific free license for his (implicit) contribution to your photos, if not for the underyling sculpture. - Jmabel ! talk 23:29, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

Bohr model for Tc

Hi,

I was looking at the page for Technetium, and I noticed that there was no Bohr model for it. I found an image online that had this license for it: Commercial & other licenses. I don't know if this image is usable, so if you could advise, that would be great.

Maintenance for errors in a cropped file wanted

I have made a crop resulting in the image File:View from ISS on Monte Rosa mountain massif with highest Swiss mountain Dufourspitze, June 2022 - ISS067-E-152529 - View of Earth (cropped and edited).jpg some days ago. Two issues arose: The original image had 4 annotations, which are now (maybe not exactly precise, my observation) id 1 to id 4 in the new image. The further about 8 annotations (making about 12 alltogether) were added by another user after my crop and are good. Hence, the original 4 annotations are wrong (and are not shown, as they have the old image dimensions, much larger) and should be deleted (I could try myself but have observed very strange errors when editing annotations in the past, so I refrain). This was issue one. Second issue: The camera location data lowermost in the infobox somehow evolved into something wrong during the crop, so that now, a red error message is shown instead. I tried to analyze the code to remedy this, but did not find any location data in the cropped file at all, just "location" without any data behind. It would be nice if the original location info could be restored, but I would be perfectly ok if just the error message vanishes, and no location info is provided. Thanks in advance, Pittigrilli (talk) 11:32, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

@Pittigrilli: I suppose you can just remove the wrong annotations. The good annotations can be renamed 1-8. The location coordinates are in the structured data of the source file. You could copy them to the extracted file, in the location template or in the structured data. However, those coordinates locate the camera in Italy. Was the satellite above Italy for this photo of Switzerland? -- Asclepias (talk) 14:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
@Asclepias: Interesting observation, this may very well be the case with Italy. In fact, the border between Italy and Switzerland runs just along the Monte Rosa massif, hence the camera position might just be (theoretically) some inches or some km inside Italy, which would be roughly at the lower (and somewhat right) image border. Thanks, Pittigrilli (talk) 14:22, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
I deleted the wrong annotation sections and renumbered the correct ones, worked out well. I have a hard time though with copying the location from the structured data section of the original file (something with the format), could sb please do that? Pittigrilli (talk) 18:26, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Image Upload Issue

Hi, I am trying to update the picture profile on a page and it will not let me replace it with the current image I have, it says that it cannot determine whether the photo is suitable for Wikipedia Commons. How do I prove that I own the image? Dsteinmetz (talk) 15:14, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

@Dsteinmetz: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post permission on their official website or social media or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Screenshots provided by developers

Hi, working on an article about a video game. I want to include screenshots that the developers posted on their public blog to show viewers the gameplay. Is this acceptable to upload to the Commons, as this seems to fall under press material? Can provide a link if needed. Squiddyonwiki (talk) 20:27, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

@Squiddyonwiki: Hi,
Press material is not accepted on Commons. We need a release with a free license, preferably CC-BY-SA-4.0. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Yann (talk) 21:51, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

I would guess that the FP reviewers would say that the blow-out problems in the sky in both would make them ineligible, but you can always submit one for review. - Jmabel ! talk 18:39, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Technical issue

Hi. I think I might have made an error when creating a deletion request here. I noticed that the prefix "File:" is missing before the file's name. Is it something that can be resolved with a page move or should I ask for an administrator's help? Sorry if all of this sounds trivial. I'm mostly active on English Wikipedia, not on the Commons so I'm not 100% familiar with the rules and regulations. Best. Keivan.fTalk 18:48, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

The DR seems fine to me. It's linked to the file, and you notified the uploader. Abzeronow (talk) 19:03, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
@Abzeronow Thank you so much for your response. I'm glad the set up is fine. My only concern was the way it had been titled but that does not appear to be an issue I guess. Best. Keivan.fTalk 20:09, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

謝謝--125.230.72.73 23:00, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

Is this revocation reasonable and correct?

I was corrected a while ago, so I wanted to ask for advice. On a certain photo, I performed two editing actions at the same time in one stroke, one to add category A and the other to modify category B. Later, this edit was revoked. This revocation caused Category B to be changed back and Category A to be removed along with it. I asked the other party why they canceled it, and I found out that the B classification I had modified was wrong. Although I had corrected the wrong classification for B, it was only for B, which meant that there was no problem with A. So I asked him why he also revoked A, but he didn’t respond. Since there is no response, it means that he has no reason for the A classification, so I am suspicious of his revocation. What I suspect is that he actually has a better way that doesn't require the undo action. He can only focus on the B classification and manually modify the wrong classification back. Because he has history and can see the previous difference, he can know what the original correct classification was.

To be honest, I not only can't understand it, but I can't accept it, because this kind of revocation feels like one place is wrong, and everything is wrong, which is unreasonable. This is also the reason for the "dispute". Therefore, I would like to ask everyone, if in the same transaction, the editing content is only classified into B, then there is a problem, but A is not a problem, and I choose to cancel it. Is this correct? If it is correct, please tell me why. Thanks

Copyrighted flags?

Hello. I imagine the two flags at the second picture here [1] are copyrighted. The flags (they're actually the two sides of one) were adopted in 1892. However this digital drawing is obviously not from then. The flags I think do pass the threshold of originality from my own judgement. According to the picture the source of the flags would be this 1995 book [2] but the organization represented by the flag does not seem to be mentioned in the book. The organization is the Macedo-Romanian Cultural Society, a private cultural organization in Romania that does not belong to the state. I just created an article for it in English Wikipedia and want to use the flags. Should I upload them here or there per fair use? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 22:21, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

The only thing there that I can really imagine having copyright is the branches (mlădițe). Romulus & Remus are almost certainly a copy of something much older; the tricolor certainly can't be copyrighted, and I doubt the arrangement can be. @Super Dromaeosaurus: I take it you disagree, though. Can you say why? - ~
Well I don't disagree, I'd love to be able to upload the flags, I just imagined it would not be possible. I'm not very well-informed on copyright issues anyway. So you say it is okay if I upload both flags in Commons? Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 09:29, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
I'd actually appreciate other opinions here, because my rationale is a combination of the use of old elements, the simplicity of the design, the date of the overall design, etc. As I said, the biggest issue I see is the branches. Does anyone have a strong opinion on whether they are enough to make it copyrightable? - Jmabel ! talk 14:42, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
Since no-one else gave their insight, and having been encouraged by Jmabel, I've uploaded the flags [3] [4]. Super Dromaeosaurus (talk) 13:52, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Public Domain Photo Map Altered via Photoshop. Ok to use?

Hello, I recently uploaded a public domain photo that I have since gotten altered by someone else. More specifically, the black line in the middle caused by newspaper creasing has been removed via Photoshop. Is altered material alright to use even though it's public domain? Wjenkins96 (talk) 04:10, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

@Wjenkins96: Sure, removal of the black line is not creative. The remover can choose the existing {{PD-US-expired}} or any other free license tag we accept.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:08, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Hey, I need some help!

So I uploaded a file to Wikimedia without properly understanding how to cite the copyright holder. It is a screenshot (that I took) of a video game (Yakuza 3), and so it falls SEGA's domain. I would appreciate what to do, as I don't know how to cite SEGA without re-uploading. Here is the file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kiryu_Kazuma_Yakuza_3.png Also: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Roosterchz If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it. -Roosterchz Roosterchz (talk) 21:13, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

@Roosterchz: Since this is protected by copyright, it has to be deleted. See COMM:LICENSE. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:14, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
Ah, welp...
So, should I just re-upload? What should I do this time for proper copyright citation?
Thanks, Roosterchz (talk) 21:16, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
Here on Wikimedia Commons, we only accept freely licensed media. So you can either 1.) get SEGA to relicense this screenshot or 2.) not upload it. Why are you trying to upload the file at all? —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:23, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
Yep, I get it now.
This isn't worth the effort anymore, sorry for wasting your guys' time. I'll be more careful in the future.
