Great blog on the subject - v v interesting, have just linked from my Wordpress account that looks at the same subject. Great addition. My work compares the ceremony as a masonic ritual, with images showing the similarities between a masonic temple and the Olympic 'temple'. Not also the presence of the Orbit statue nearby, which looks like Lilith, a Jewish demon figure that is used to guard buildings and temples... and usually requires human sacrifice.

Hi Bob, I watched the opening ceremony and during the industrial revolution bit I wondered what the chimney’s really represented. I found myself counting their number but I couldn’t work out the significance I intuitively felt they must have.

Then on Facebook I saw this:

- I was puzzled by the fact, why Big Ben rang at 8.12 at 27 july.
Until I considered this:

Keep in mind, that 8.12 is 12 minutes past 8, but ALSO 18 minutes before half past 8

Shabbat candles

Shabbat candles are candles lit on Friday nights, 18 minutes before sunset, to usher in the Jewish Sabbath

What does this mean? It means, one hour on the clock of Big Ben represents a day. Half the hour is sunset and the whole hour is sunrise.

Ringing the bell 18 minutes before the half hour,

represents/announces the lighten of the shabbat candle, 18 minutes before sunset.

But, you wil ask: did we see any ligtening of a candle in the opening sceremony?

Count them: We see 7 chimneys! But they are not really chimneys; the represent a sabbath candle with 7 branches. In fact they represent a specific sabbath candle: The menorah

The menorah is described in the Bible as the seven-branched ancient lampstand made of gold and used in the portable sanctuary set up by Moses in the wilderness and later in the Temple in Jerusalem.

The seven branches allude to the branches of human knowledge, represented by the six lamps inclined inwards towards, and symbolically guided by, the light of God represented by the central lamp. The menorah also symbolizes the creation in seven days, with the center light representing the Sabbath. It is also said to symbolize the burning bush as seen by Moses on Mount Horeb

Did I read that well?: A menorah also symbolizes the burning bush as seen by moses?
Where did I see that? A burning bush? At the openings ceremony!

The olympic fire, after being lit, represents the burning bush. (it was the first time done like this, because always the fire was lit in some kind of caldron.

But there is more:

The Menorah is also a symbol closely associated with the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

The name "Hanukkah" derives from a Hebrew verb , meaning "to dedicate". On Hanukkah, the jewish people regained control of Jerusalem and rededicated the Temple.

So: here it is, right in our faces...The ringing of the bell symbolizes the countdown in 18 minutes till sunset, when the new day, the sabbath begins.

Together with the other Olympic ceremony symbols: The menorah and Hanukkah, all releated to Jerusalem and the re-dedication of the temple.

And wasn`t it all about that: till we have built Jersusalem on Englands green and pleasant land"?

Also note, that the countdown to the sabbath at half past takes 18 minutes...these can also been seen as 18 days. Add 18 days to the day of the opening and you will get august 13...one day after the closing ceremony..!!

In other words...from the day, the closing ceremony is over...the real feast will begin.

during the lighting ceremony, as the copper torches started to rise, it looked like the lens of an eye, and when upright, the camera shot from the inside looking up through the middle was reminiscent of saurons eye

I noticed that the female commentator on BBC 1 after the creepy NHS part reported that 600 NHS staff + 300 children were involved in it and after a few second she said that 7500 volunteers have been taking part in the preparations for the games mentioning also the hours each one has spend in this effort. Unfortunately I don't remember that number but 600+300 = 900 = 9 and 7500=7+5=12 so here we have 9/12...
