What struck me was the reference to the flowers dying at the end of summer which could correspond to a dormant pathogene activating at the end of the summer. Tying in the phrase "I am dead, as dead I well may be" to the time when all the flowers are dying could provide a time frame that corresponds with your theory. The other thing that strikes me is the phrase "kneel and say an 'Ave' there for me" obviously meaning Ave Maria or a prayer to Mary/Queen mother of heaven/Isis, a prayer for the dead.

As I was reading the Danny Boy lyrics I couldn't help but think of Pan's Pipes as what is being referenced by "the pipes are calling". What exactly is it that is sleeping until those pipes serve as the wake-up call?

Very informative article I wanted to add a comment regarding an observation my dad made when reading the article. The man who is charged with directing the opening ceremonies is Danny Boyle. Lets view his name as Danny Boy(le) or Danny Boy. There is an Irish song titled Danny Boy that has somewhat disturbing content, the lyrics are as follows:

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
