Tough stuff, but right-on, Bob.

We must have been listening to the same Spirit last night because I posted a comment along similar lines on Cindy-by-the-Sea's blog about the time you posted this (before I'd read it).

One of the most painful and protracted aspects of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's ministry in Germany in the 1930s was getting people to see that a chasm was widening between loyalty to God and to country. Most, at the time, wanted to believe they were the same thing. In most countries, I suspect, people would like to see them as well-aligned. It makes life a LOT easier in many ways.

Yet it is God's merciful purpose to separate us from our earthly, idolatrous loyalties, even the "good" ones that may seem, for a time, reasonably close to his priorities. As the chasm widens, the differences become clearer. One MUST choose.
