He is bonded to the elephant often from a young age and he uses commands, kicks behind the ears and a stick to control an animal much bigger and stronger than himself. The elephant is often tethered by a chain when it's young so it cannot stray. Later the chain is replaced by a rope and a peg. Something the elephant can easily pull out but he is so used to the chains restrictive nature that he transfers it to the rope. The elephant is totally reliant on the mahout and he will work his whole life in his service.
