During 'Operation Iraqi Freedom', American intelligence agencies stated that Belarus was sheltering Saddam Hussein.
The evidence for this was a cargo flight from Baghdad to the Belarusian capital of Minsk. The documentation for this flight was found after the capture of Baghdad airport in April 2003.
Reportedly a senior intelligence source said: "If you can think of anybody else who could obtain permission to fly out of Baghdad in the middle of a war, then please tell me."
Reportedly, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko was a friend to Saddam and a major military supplier to Saddam. Reportedly Saddam had thought about leaving Iraq and going to Belarus.
