The popular Thaksin, who has helped the poor and been friendly to China.
In 2006, the Thai military overthrew the very popular government of Thaksin Shinawatra .
In 2007, the People's Power Party (Thailand), led by Samak Sundaravej, and allied to Thaksin Shinawatra, formed a government with five smaller parties.
The right-wing People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), possibly backed by the CIA, have been trying to topple the elected government.
PAD want to make Thailand less democratic. They want fewer elected and more appointed members of parliament.
Prime Minister Samak, who is allied to Thaksin.
On 2 December 2008 it was announced that Thailand's constitutional court had dissolved the governing People Power Party and two of its coalition partners. - Thailand ruling party dissolved
Some might suspect that the court is owned by the CIA.
Asia Times, 7 November 2008, (What Obama means to Bangkok) made the following points about what has been going on:
1. China has been making trade and investment deals with Thailand.
The USA failed to make a bilateral free-trade agreement with Thailand. China succeeded in making a bilateral free-trade agreement with Thailand.
China and Thailand held the first ever bilateral naval exercises in 2005.
The Thai military have been allowed to observe Chinese military exercises and have bought major Chinese-made military hardware.
The King, apparently a friend of the USA.
2. In 2oo6 the popular Thaksin was toppled by the military.
A few months later, US and Thai troops held their Cobra Gold joint military exercises.
The people who allegedly organised the coup were known US allies, including former CIA-trained spy chief Prasong Soonsiri and Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda.
The US has apparently offered no sympathy or help to the elected government of Thailand during the recent troubled months.
