On 1 December 2012, it was reported that Tunisian security forces, using armoured personnel carriers, fired tear gas and live rounds, to try to disperse thousands of protesters in the town of Siliana.
There have been several days of clashes over economic hardship.

"Siliana will be the graveyard of the (Islamist) Ennahda party" the protesters shouted.
Navi Pillay, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said on 30 November 2012, that the authorities must stop using firearms against demonstrators.
Medical sources say 17 have been blinded.

On 5 December 2012, we read: "It was an unprecedented moment. The presidential palace in Cairo under siege, the police close to losing control.
"President Morsi had to be hustled away for his own safety.
"Nothing similar happened, even in the protests against former President Hosni Mubarak last year."
