1. In Belgium, in 1985, a secret army, linked to the CIA and NATO, shot randomly at shoppers in supermarkets.
28 people were killed.
Investigations linked the terror to:
1. the Belgian stay-behind group SDRA8 (linked to NATO and the CIA),
2. the Belgian Gendarmerie SDRA6,
3. the Belgian right-wing group Westland New Post,
4. and the Pentagon's Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).
The stay-behind groups were set up by the CIA and NATO after World War II,

2. In Algeria, in 1961, members of the French stay-behind group, and officers from the French War in Vietnam, founded the Organisation Armee Secrete (OAS).
With CIA support they staged a coup in Algiers against the French government of de Gaulle. This coup failed.
The OAS, reportedly with help from NATO's stay behind groups, carried out many acts of terrorism within France.
In 1966 President Charles de Gaulle denounced the secret warfare of the Pentagon and expelled the European headquarters of NATO.

3. According to the book The Intelligence Game, by James Rusbridger, an ex-SAS man planted the bomb that killed 80 men, women and children in Beirut in 1985.
The SAS is a British army group.
In 1985, America was having problems in Beirut.
According to Rusbridger, the CIA hired a British ex-Special Air Services soldier and paid him to plant a bomb in a crowded street.
On 8 March 1985 the bomb exploded killing 80 men, women and children. 200 were seriously injured.
Reporter Bob Woodward wrote that CIA director William Casey, while lying on his deathbed, had admitted personal culpability in the attack, which he suggests was carried out with funding from Saudi Arabia.[10]

4. The Bologna massacre was a terrorist bombing at the Central Station in Bologna, Italy, on the morning of 2 August 1980.
The bombs killed 85 people and wounded more than 200.
According to the Italian Senate, after its investigation of the Bologna massacre in 2000, the bombers were "men inside Italian state institutions and ... men linked to the structures of United States intelligence."
Four Italian fascists, allegedly with links to the security services of Italy and the USA, fled to Britain.
They were tried in their absence in Italy, found guilty and sentenced to long terms of imprisonment.
The Italian government tried to have the four extradited.
Britain would not hand them over.
The four lived openly in London.

5. In 1969 in Italy, the Piazza Fontana massacre in Milan killed sixteen and injured 80.
Thirty years later, during a trial of right-wing extremists, General Giandelio Maletti, former head of Italian counter-intelligence, stated that the massacre had been carried out by the Italian stay-behind army and right wing terrorists on the orders of the CIA.

Dr. Daniele Ganser, of the Center for Security Studies at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich has written a book called, “NATO’s Secret Armies. Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe.”
During the Cold War, European governments and secret services conspired with a NATO-backed operation to engineer attacks in their own countries in order to manipulate the population to reject socialism and communism.
It was called “the strategy of tension” and it was carried out by members of secret stay-behind armies organized by NATO and funded by the CIA in Italy, Portugal, Germany, Spain, and other European countries.
The strategy apparently involved supplying right-wing terrorists with explosives to carry out terrorist acts which were then blamed on left-wing groups to keep them out of power.
Only three countries, Italy, Belgium, and Switzerland, have had a parliamentary investigation into NATO’s role and a public report...
It all began during WWII when British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, ordered a secret army to be created to fight communism. Allen Dulles, the first chief of the CIA, worked out the original plan, and British MI6 and special forces teamed up with the CIA to train “stay- behind armies” in Western Europe to counter a possible Soviet invasion...
It turns out that what Washington meant by counter-terrorism, might often have been, well, terrorism...
According to Ganser, the secret army was behind waves of attacks in Italy in the 1970s.
In Spain, it worked with Franco and may have supported over a 1000 attacks.
In Germany, it had standing plans to murder leaders of the Social Democrat party in case of a Soviet invasion.
It carried out terrorist actions against President de Gaulle and the Algerian peace plan in France.
It seems to have been involved in the assassination of Amilcar Cabral and Eduardo Mondlane, prominent leaders in African liberation in the Portugese colonies.
It was involved in the coup against Greek Prime Minister Papandreou.
It fomented terrorism against the Kurds in Turkey...
The secret armies were first outed in August 1990 when then Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti confirmed the existence of Gladio, Latin for sword, a super secret group squirreled away in the military secret service, that had been manipulating the public with terrorist acts that it blamed on the Italian left.
NATO’s reaction to Andreotti’s revelation was first denial, then stone-walling, and finally a closed-doors admission to the ambassadors of the European countries.
Since then, although a former CIA director William Colby has confirmed the creation of the stay-behind command centers and networks, NATO itself has withheld details...
