Not noticing missing things, or even obvious things, is often due to Inattentional Blindness, where your brain filters out expected or irrelevant sensory info to focus on primary tasks, leading you to miss the unexpected (like the "invisible gorilla" experiment) or gradual changes (like new construction). This "normal blindness" helps manage information overload, but also means things right in front of you get overlooked because your attention is elsewhere, a process influenced by focus, cognitive load, and even familiarity,…

Key Psychological Concepts

Inattentional Blindness (IB): The failure to see something obvious because attention is directed elsewhere, like when counting basketball passes and missing a gorilla walking by.

Normal Blindness: A specific type of IB where the brain filters out constant, mundane, or gradual changes in the environment, allowing focus on immediate needs, say Psychology Today.

Selective Attention: Your brain can only process a fraction of available sensory data, so it selects what's important, making other things "invisible" in plain sight.

Why It Happens

Focused Attention: Strong focus acts like a filter, only letting in crucial, task-related stimuli.

Cognitive Load: When busy, your brain prioritizes, leaving less capacity to register unexpected items, even if they're visible.

Expectation & Familiarity: If something is expected (like a familiar routine) or very familiar, it's easier to miss subtle deviations or even its presence.

Habituation: Constant exposure to an item or situation makes it blend into the background, causing you to stop noticing it.

Real-World Examples

Missing a new landmark in your commute.

Failing to notice a coworker's consistent effort because it's just "normal".

Losing everyday items like keys or glasses because your brain wasn't actively tracking them.

In essence, your brain prioritizes, filters, and sometimes ignores information to function efficiently, which is why "what we don't expect, we often don't see," …

Swami Satchidananda Saraswati (22 December 1914 – 19 August 2002), born C. K. Ramaswamy Gounder, was an Indian yoga guru and religious teacher who gained a significant following in the West.

He founded Integral Yoga, a blend of hatha yoga and yoga philosophy, and established its headquarters, Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville, in Virginia, USA, in 1986.

The ashram features the LOTUS, a lotus-shaped interfaith shrine dedicated to the Universal Light, which was inaugurated in 1986 with a grand ceremony involving a helicopter flyover and a parade including a baby elephant.

Satchidananda was ordained into sannyasa (monastic life) by Sri Swami Sivananda in 1949, receiving the name Swami Satchidananda, a term meaning "existence, consciousness, bliss" in Sanskrit.

He studied under Sivananda for 17 years and was one of his key missionaries.

He served as a spiritual leader in Sri Lanka, where he managed ashrams and promoted interfaith dialogue and social reform, including efforts to welcome untouchables into Hindu temples.

He later moved to the United States, arriving in 1966 through the invitation of filmmaker Conrad Rooks and artist Peter Max, who recognized his potential to guide the Western spiritual seekers of the era.

He became widely known as the "Woodstock guru" after opening the 1969 Woodstock music festival with a speech in which he declared music "the celestial sound that controls the whole universe" and led the crowd in chanting "Hari Om ... Rama Rama".

His teachings emphasized the principle of "Truth is One, Paths are Many," promoting interfaith understanding and spiritual unity.

He attracted a diverse following, including celebrities such as Carole King, Alice Coltrane, Diane Ladd, Laura Dern, Sally Kirkland, and Dr. Dean Ornish, who credited his teachings as inspiration for his work on reversing heart disease.
