Good countries to invest in? 'Criminal' justice systems.

~~

American Justice

From The Christian Science Monitor 12 August 2003:

"A Brooklyn mother, afraid she'd lost a custody battle, was approached by a man in a municipal building and told that with a little cash, the judge could be persuaded to see things her way...

Judge Gerald Garson was arrested on charges of accepting "money and gifts in exchange for giving preferential treatment" to him.

...Watchdog groups consider Brooklyn, New York, one of America's most corrupt judicial systems.

It has been suggested that the CIA set up a drugs route from Europe to the United States called Operation Corea. This allowed Syrian drug dealers, led by Monzer al-Kassar (who was involved with Oliver North in Iran-Contra) to ship heroin to the U.S.

Scotland on Sunday, 8 April 2001:

"A United Nations observer at the Lockerbie trial has branded the verdicts in the case unfair, irrational and politically motivated, saying they should be overturned on appeal.

"In a scathing denunciation of the proceedings and the quality of Scottish justice, Professor Hans Koechler, a world-renowned expert in international law, claims there was no basis in evidence for the guilty verdict against one of the accused.

"Koechler, personally appointed by UN secretary general Kofi Annan to oversee the trial at Camp Zeist in Holland, said it was tainted by the air of international power politics and was neither fair nor balanced.

"The guilty verdict in regard to the first accused appears to be arbitrary, even irrational, his report states.

"The outcome of the trial may well have been determined by political considerations and may have been the result of a more or less openly -exercised influence... from outside the judicial framework.

"Koechler acknowledges that his condemnation of the trial may have a profound impact on the professional reputation and integrity of the three Scottish judges—Lords Sutherland, Coulsfield and Maclean—but insists that the verdicts were unfair and adds that he hopes any appeal will correct the deficiencies of the trial. His report has been buried by both the UN and the Scottish authorities for the past two months.

On 17 June 2005 the Editor of Laksamana.Net wrote about corruption cases dealt with by the South Jakarta District Court.

According to Laksamana, the court "has maintained its reputation as 'the graveyard of corruption cases' by finding Golkar Party legislator Nurdin Halid not guilty of embezzling Rp169.7 billion ($18 million) in state funds from the National Logistics Agency (Bulog)....

"(The) South Jakarta District Court has a reputation for handing down the best verdicts that money can buy...

"The case stemmed from Bank Indonesia’s decision in early 1998 to give Rp169.7 billion to Bulog, which in turn channeled the money to KDI to purchase and distribute cooking oil to the needy...

"Halid is from South Sulawesi, which is also the home province of Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

"South Jakarta District Court in September 2000 suspended a $571 million corruption case against former president Suharto after his doctors and lawyers argued he was permanently unfit to face trial.

"South Jakarta District Court in 1999 found Suharto’s youngest son Hutomo ‘Tommy’ Mandala Putra and tycoon Ricardo Gelael not guilty of corruption involving a 1995 land scam with Bulog that cost the state Rp95.4 billion.

"The Supreme Court in 2000 overturned the verdict and sentenced each of them to 18 months behind bars... Tommy sought a presidential pardon, failed to get it, went into hiding and murdered the judge who convicted him.

"South Jakarta District Court in 2000 freed former Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency deputy chief Pande Lubis, tycoon Joko Tjandra and other businessmen of all charges in the Bank Bali corruption swindle that caused state losses of about $78 million.

"South Jakarta District Court in 2001 acquitted Zainal Abidin, a former Supreme Court official, who was accused of receiving Rp100 million in bribes.

"South Jakarta District Court in 2002 acquitted Sudjiono Timan, the former president director of state-owned investment firm PT Bahana Pembinaan Usaha Indonesia, of involvement in a swindle that cost the state $240.9 million.

"The Supreme Court in December 2004 sentenced him to 15 years in jail and ordered him to repay much the money, but some crooked police thoughtfully helped him to flee the country. He now apparently resides comfortably in Singapore.

"South Jakarta District Court in 1999 acquitted oil tycoon/politician Arifin Panigoro of charges related to state losses of $150 million linked to his Medco Group’s default on a foreign loan that had been guaranteed by state-owned company PT Asuransi Jasa Indonesia (Jasindo)...

"South Jakarta District Court in – well you get the idea."

Blair and Africa and climate

David Edwards wrote, 7 June 2005, about the BBC reporter Nick Bryant and co.

"Bryant and co are ...now trying to convince us that Blair is "passionate" about saving Africa and the climate.

Stolen election?

Robert Koehler, an award-winning, Chicago-based journalist, is an editor at Tribune Media Services and nationally syndicated writer.

http://commonwonders.com/archives/col290.htm

"Was the election of 2004 stolen? ....

"We might ask why so many Ph.D.-level mathematicians and computer programmers and other numbers-savvy scientists are saying that the numbers don’t make sense (see, for instance, http://web.northnet.org/minstrel/, the Web site of Dr. Richard Hayes Phillips, lead statistician in the Moss v. Bush lawsuit challenging the Ohio election results). Indeed, the movement to investigate the 2004 election is led by such people, because the numbers are screaming at them that something is wrong.

"And we might, no, we must, ask — with more seriousness than the media have asked — about those exit polls, which in years past were extraordinarily accurate but last November went haywire, predicting Kerry by roughly the margin by which he ultimately lost to Bush. This swing is out of the realm of random chance, forcing chagrined pollsters to hypothesize a “shy Republican” factor as the explanation; and the media have bought this evidence-free absurdity because it spares them the need to think about the F-word: fraud."

British bombing raids on Iraq were illegal according to the Foreign Office legal advice

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1660300,00.html

The Sunday Times, 19 June 2005, reported that "a sharp increase in British and American bombing raids on Iraq in the run-up to war 'to put pressure on the regime' was illegal under international law, according to leaked Foreign Office legal advice.

"The advice was first provided to senior ministers in March 2002. Two months later RAF and USAF jets began 'spikes of activity' designed to goad Saddam Hussein into retaliating and giving the allies a pretext for war."

Biggest bubble in history? House price crash worldwide?

http://inhome.rediff.com/money/2005/jun/18guest1.htm

There was a 36% rise in real house prices in Japan in the seven years to 1991.

Since 1991, Japanese property prices have dropped for 13 consecutive years, by a total of 35 per cent.

Taking the average ratio of house prices to incomes in 1975-2000 as a baseline, American house prices are now overvalued by almost 30 per cent.

~~

http://inhome.rediff.com/money/2005/jun/18guest1.htm

In the past three years, the total value of residential property in developed economies has increased by an estimated $ 20 trillion, to over $ 60 trillion.

The rise is double the $ 10 trillion by which global share values climbed in the three years to 1999.

~~

http://www.economist.com/opinion/displayStory.cfm?story_id=4079458

"Not only do houses in many countries look more overvalued than at previous peaks, but with inflation so low, prices would have to stay flat for at least a decade to bring real prices back to long-run average values.

"Most important of all, in many countries this house-price boom has been driven far more by investors than in the past, and if prices start to dip, they are more likely to sell than owner-occupiers. In America this could mean the first fall in average house prices since the Great Depression."

~~

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1660056,00.html

House prices over the last 3 years:

South Africa up 95%

Australia up 56%

Britain up 50%

Thailand up 29%.

"To doubters — who are predicting prices will fall by 20% or more in many countries — it is the gigantic bubble that swallowed the world, bigger than the stock market boom of the 1990s and almost twice the size of the Wall Street bubble of the roaring 1920s."

~~

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1660056,00.html

"In the late 1980s the UK property market peaked and the following recession left 2m people trapped in homes with negative equity — some for more than a decade. Some 75,000 homes were repossessed in 1991 alone.

"A recent study by the Bank for International Settlements examined 16 house price booms in various countries since 1970, and found that only six had ended in sudden busts. All but one of those, however, led to a recession.

"In Britain the long-run ratio of average of house prices to average annual earnings is 3.8; but it currently stands at 5.5."

~~

FRANCE :Average prices have risen 48% over the past three years, but rural houses in less fashionable regions can still be picked up for less than £50,000.

~~~
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1660056,00.html
"House prices in Britain soared in the late 1980s, buoyed by low interest rates and tax cuts. When interest rates doubled in 18 months house prices crashed, dropping by 30%-40% in some areas.
"In the 1990s internet stocks boomed. But after peaking in spring 2000 they lost two-thirds of their value in three years."
Confining civilisation to narrow bands around the poles
Climate change: are some places going to get much hotter and some places going to get much colder?
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,6903,1153513,00.html
"Now the Pentagon tells Bush: climate change will destroy us..."
"A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world."
~~~

http://www.ems.org/climate/pentagon_climate_change.html

"An imminent scenario of catastrophic climate change is 'plausible and would challenge United States national security in ways that should be considered immediately,' according to a report commissioned by the Pentagon.

"The report... identifies a plausible scenario in which global warming disrupts ocean currents that help moderate climate in North America and Europe, causing a five degree Fahrenheit drop in parts of North America by 2020 and a six degree drop in Northern Europe. It says global warming 'should be... a U.S. national security concern.'"

~~~
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1602579,00.html
"CLIMATE change researchers have detected the first signs of a slowdown in the Gulf Stream — the mighty ocean current that keeps Britain and Europe from freezing.
"They have found that one of the “engines” driving the Gulf Stream — the sinking of supercooled water in the Greenland Sea — has weakened to less than a quarter of its former strength.
"The weakening, apparently caused by global warming, could herald big changes in the current over the next few years or decades. Paradoxically, it could lead to Britain and northwestern and Europe undergoing a sharp drop in temperatures.
"Such a change has long been predicted by scientists but the new research is among the first to show clear experimental evidence of the phenomenon."
~~~

The Sunday Herald, 19 June 2005, has a series of articles on climate change:

http://www.sundayherald.com/50335

1987: Warmest year since records began, helping to make the 1980s the hottest decade to date.

1995: The hottest year recorded so far.

1998: The hottest year in the hottest decade of the hottest century of the millennium.

2000: IPCC scientists warn that the world could warm by 6°C within a century.

2001: US president Bush rejects Kyoto.

2003: The hottest summer in Europe for at least 500 years, causing an estimated 30,000 deaths.

http://www.sundayherald.com/50323

Rob Edwards, in the Sunday Herald, 19 June 2005:

"The Antarctic ice sheet... Only a fraction of it has to melt to trigger a cataclysm... Over the past 50 years, 87% of its glaciers have retreated, and they are now retreating by an average of 50 metres a year...

"If the ice sheet melts, the level of the world’s seas could rise by about five metres, submerging half of Bangladesh and three-quarters of the Netherlands and drowning Calcutta, large parts of Sydney, London and Florida."

A scientific study last week revealed that "Bangladesh’s biggest island, Bhola, had been shrunk to half its size over the past 40 years by rising waters, making half a million people homeless.
Altogether, 50 million people in Bangladesh live less than five metres above sea level."

"The entire Amazon rainforest could dry out and die. And the world’s climate could flip into a new stable state 6ÂșC hotter than now, turning a third of the land to desert and confining civilisation to narrow bands around the poles."

"Leaked drafts of the proposed Gleneagles declaration on climate change reveal that it has been watered down by the US to the point where it no longer even accepts that human activities are to blame."

http://www.sundayherald.com/50333

"The pollution that belches from every vehicle, every factory, every farm and every home is rising up into the atmosphere and bouncing the sun’s reflected rays back to Earth, causing the greenhouse effect....

"Polar ice is melting, sea levels are rising, storms are increasing, droughts are becoming more frequent – and more communities around the globe are suffering...

"It has been accepted by every major scientific organisation, every major non-governmental organisation and the vast majority of governments.

"Even the tiny band of sceptics is dwindling, with the veteran TV botanist, David Bellamy, withdrawing from the argument after admitting that he was wrong to say that glaciers were advancing not retreating...

"An analysis of the latest figures shows that pollution from four of the G8 – Canada, US, Japan and Italy – has been increasing when it should have been decreasing.

"The US rise of 13%, between 1990 and 2002, is bigger than the overall reductions that the other seven countries are meant to achieve under Kyoto.

"Even the four countries that are on target for cutting their pollution – France, Germany, UK and Russia – have got there mostly by accident. Dirty old industries in Russia were closed by the collapse of the former Soviet Union, and in Germany, the same happened in the east after reunification.

"Much of the UK’s cuts can be attributed to the shutdown of the coal-mining industry and the Ravenscraig steelworks under the previous Conservative government. Overall, not counting Russia, the G8 countries have increased emissions of carbon dioxide by 7% since 1990, when they should have cut them by about 5%...

"Between 1970 and 1995, the availability of water in Africa decreased 2.8 times... In southern Africa and parts of the Horn, rainfall is projected to decline by about 10% by 2050...

"There are many other things that G8 countries should be doing to curb their own pollution. They need to boost their use of clean energy technologies, tapping wind, wave, tidal, solar and biomass to a much greater extent. They need to develop the technology to capture the carbon produced by burning coal and to store it under the sea or land, so that China has a clean way of utilising its coal.

"G8 leaders ....How can they carry on endorsing the unrelenting increase in air travel and car ownership...

"Along with floods in the Ganges delta and famines in Africa, it is the communities that inhabit low-lying Pacific islands or cling to the ice around the Arctic that are suffering....

Bombs Philippines Indonesia

http://www.propagandamatrix.com/241103blackops.html

According to PropagandaMatrix:

"The despicable US media giants were silent when undisputed proof surfaced that the CIA, NSA, British Intelligence, the US Secret Service and the FBI were all involved in the May 16th 2002 blast in a Philippine hotel room when their agent, Michael Meiring accidently blew his own legs off while constructing a bomb which was intended, if ignited as planned, to be a staged 'Al Queda' terror attack, justifying a tightened US- Philippine military alliance.

"Meiring who operated under the cover of being a treasure hunter was in fact a CIA operative under the direct protection of the White House (As evidenced by his swift NSA/FBI medivac to San Diego after blowing his own legs off). The US spook spent 10 years on assignment associating with Islamic groups, Abu Sayef, MNLF, Moro Islamic Liberation Front, and other Philippine based Islamic groups, supplying them with US counterfeit notes (Courtesy of US intelligence) and bomb making materials so that they may create terrorist mayhem within the Philippines, giving the US a pretext to move in and, 'help,' just like in Indonesia - just like nearly everywhere else these Mafia-like thugs can plant their terror and, 'protection' racket."

http://www.washingtonobserver.org/en/081104CN94-leehl.cfm

From the Washington Observer:

"In the 1990s, Singapore funded the construction of a deep-draft vessel pier at Changi Naval Base specifically to berth U.S. aircraft carriers...

"The United States has proposed increased naval patrols in the Strait of Malacca. Malaysia and Indonesia, two countries that share the coordinated patrols of the Strait, both have raised objections...

"The U.S. rationale for increased patrols in the Strait is that one-quarter of worldwide imports and exports and one-half of the world's oil are transported through the area."

In ONLINE JOURNAL 24 May 2005 Daniel Estulin wrote about Bilderburg 2005

"INDONESIA-MALAYSIA STANDOFF: A political and military confrontation between these two nations in the petroleum-rich Sulawesi Sea (both claim the oil-rich area of Ambalat as their territorial rights) was the topic of a much-animated discussion...

"An American Bilderberger ... suggested usingthe UN to 'further a peace policy in the region.' Bilderbergers at the lounge table all agreed that such a conflict might well give theman excuse to garrison the disputed area with UN 'Peacekeepers' and thus ensure their ultimate control over the exploitation of this treasure, meaning untapped oil reserves."

http://aangirfan.blogspot.com/2005/03/bali-bomb-and-military.html

According to a news story in the Sydney Morning Herald, November 2, 2002, Indonesian security services may have handled the Bali bomb.

According to the Herald- "Some time around the 30 October 2002, senior officers in the Indonesian military HQ gave a piece of information to a military attache from a Western embassy in Indonesia:- the source of explosive used in the October 12 bombing in Bali was THE HEAD OF THE COUNTER-TERRORISM UNIT WITH THE ARMY'S SPECIAL FORCES."

The father-in-law of the officer concerned is Hendropriyono, Indonesia's spy chief.

On Oct. 16 Indonesian police arrested a former Air Force officer who confessed to building the bomb.

http://aangirfan.blogspot.com/2005/03/bali-bomb-and-military.html

Allegedly, Omar Al-Faruq played a part in the Bali bomb business.

Former Indonesian State Intelligence Coordinating Board (BAKIN) chief A.C. Manulang has said that Kuwaiti citizen Omar Al-Faruq, a terrorist suspect who was arrested in Bogor, West Java, on June 5, 2002 and handed over to the US three days later, is a CIA-recruited agent.

Al Faruq was allegedly assigned to infiltrate Islamic radical groups and recruit local agents within these groups.

"When Al Faruq finished his assignments, the CIA created a scenario that he had been arrested," Manulang told Tempo News Room in Jakarta on Thursday afternoon (19/9/2002). This kind of operation is aimed at starting conflicts in Indonesia and creating the image that Indonesia is a land of terrorists.

In 1958 the CIA was organising rebellions in Indonesia to try to topple the democratically elected president.

"A CIA plane bombed the Ambon marketplace, killing many civilians on their way to church. Three days later a CIA pilot, Allen Lawrence Pope, was shot down and captured."

"Who bombed the Attorney General's office in Jakarta in July 2000?"

"The bombs went off one hour after Tommy Suharto had been interrogated by the police. The bombs were traced back to the army and a former member of Suharto's guard. There were lots of bombs at that time. A woman called Elize Tuwahatu was jailed for ten years after admitting she had placed Tommy's bombs in various places in Jakarta. Now tommy is in jail."

~~

"What about the Moslem fighters in the Moluccas?"

"Groups within the armed forces are behind that... Laskar Jihad, the biggest Moslem militia, has always had links to the army. The army uses them to fight against the independence movement in the Moluccas. And to undermine democracy. And to distract attention away from the corruption of the elite."

~~

Singapore's Straits Times published a document detailing a plan to launch a holy war. Many observers suspect the document is a fake, invented by Indonesian and US intelligence, so that the US can resume military aid to Jakarta.

~~~
"Who bombed Bali?"
"The airline manifest of Garuda airlines shows that at least two military generals from Jakarta happened to visit Bali just three days before the bombings and that they returned to Jakarta just one day before the Sari Club was blown up.
"This was confirmed by armed forces chief General Sutarto, who claimed that General Djaja Suparman was on vacation, while General Ryamizard Riyacudu, chief of staff, was said to have gone to Bali for health reasons.
"General Suparman is one of the generals behind the extremist Jihad groups. He set up militias composed of gangsters and religious fanatics to counter student demonstrations in 1998. One of these militias, Pram Swarkasa, became Laskar Jihad."
~~~

"What about this person called Amrozi, who was arrested?"

"He's probably working for the police. Probably a police informant. Did you see the photos of him getting a friendly handshake from the police chief. They were all smiles."

~~~
http://laksamana.net/vnews.cfm?news_id=8182
Jakarta June 3 2005:
"On late Thursday night, several members of the police bomb squad visited the city’s main backpacker strip, Jalan Jaksa, but declined to say whether they were acting in response to a threat. Elsewhere in the city, several bars frequented by Westerners have set up nightly road blocks and hired security officials to check all incoming vehicles. Security personnel have also been posted at sidewalk entrances to the shopping complex containing the city’s main McDonald’s restaurant."
Britain's National Health Service
If you lived in Malaysia or Singapore you could walk into a hospital in the morning, ask for a hearing test, get the test within minutes, and get a hearing aid the next day.
Recently a British friend waited over a year to have a hearing test at one of Britain's National Health Service hospitals and then waited a further 3 months to get a hearing aid.
When the friend got her appointment she noted that the hospital department had lots and lots of new administrators working at new computers at new desks. But there was a severe shortage of
Audiologists.
The hearing test was carried out in a large untidy room with no soundproofing.
18 June 2005: "A HOSPITAL told a road accident victim that she would have to wait a year and a half for an NHS brain scan, but could have the procedure done privately at the same unit in two weeks...
"King’s College Hospital, London, warned Rachel King that, because of “heavy demand”, the MRI scan that her consultant had sought could be delayed for 80 weeks.
"But a handwritten note at the end of the letter gave a telephone number for the hospital’s 'self-pay' private clinic, where she could have the procedure in two weeks for £983."
17 Jun 2005 : "Consultant general surgeon Mike Lavelle wrote in a scathing letter how there has been an 'almost unbelievable increase in NHS employees who contribute nothing to the treatment of patients...
"Mr Lavelle, who has worked for the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust for more than two decades, added that the NHS was 'grossly over-managed' with too much cash spent on new managers and not on care...
~~~

Daily Express 17 June 2005:

£16 billion per year is being spent on bureaucrats across the NHS - a quarter of the entire budget.

Since Labour came to power in 1997, the number of penpushers in the NHS has gone up by 60%.

There are now 521,000 NHS bureaucrats - just short of the 550,000 staff trained to help the sick.

Since 1997, the Government has employed managers at three times the rate of clinical staff.

I also got told off at the same time for featuring my MPs photograph and writing about what was said in the surgery. Former WorldCom CEO Bernard Ebbers was convicted on nine counts of conspiracy, securities fraud and filing false documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The WorldCom bankruptcy was the biggest in US corporate history.

WorldCom filed for bankruptcy in July 2002, 'its debts dwarfing its $104 billion in assets.'

The collapse was nearly twice the size of the previous largest bankruptcy, the 2001 failure of Enron.

Patrick Martin wrote that if the top people in the US government faced the same standards as Ebbers, "top officials of the Bush administration, including Bush himself, would stand convicted of far greater crimes—not only in falsifying the finances of the federal government on a scale which puts WorldCom in the shade, but in the systematic campaign of lying that has accompanied its foreign policy of military aggression.

"The case of Bernie Ebbers has shed further light on the increasingly criminal character of the practices of corporate America, which finds its concentrated political expression in the Bush administration."

Rafael Azul, in WSWS 15 June 2004, wrote that the Enron tapes expose the blatant criminality of corporate America.

Azul wrote: "The recent release of transcripts of taped conversations among Enron electricity traders in the summer of 2001 reveals that company insiders not only knew they were stealing from California and other states, but gloated about it. The partial release of thousands of hours of tapes is a powerful indictment of the energy companies that looted California and Washington of close to $11 billion, with the support and assistance of government officials.

"The tapes, during which Enron traders celebrate the misery caused to consumers and businesses by their practices, also provide a revealing glimpse into the depraved and truly criminal mentality of the American corporate elite."

False news stories on Afghanistan and Iraq

http://www.globalnewsmatrix.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1398

Global News Matrix has an item worth reading in full.

Global News Matrix relates that Colonel Sam Gardiner (USAF, Ret.) has identified 50 false news stories created and leaked by a secretive White House propaganda department.

Some examples:

Iraqi agents meeting with 9/11 hijacker Mohammed Atta
Iraq's possession of chemical and biological weapons.
Iraq's purchase of nuclear materials from Niger.
The rescue of Pvt. Jessica Lynch.
The surrender of a 5,000-man Iraqi brigade.
Iraq executing Coalition POWs.
Iraqi soldiers dressing in US and UK uniforms to commit atrocities.
WMDs moved to Syria....

Every one of these stories was false.

The White House Coalition Information Center was set up in November 2001. The CIC used "the plight of women in Afghanistan" as an excuse for attacking Afghanistan.

Laura Bush : "Only the terrorists and the Taliban threaten to pull out women's fingernails for wearing nail polish."

Cherie Blaire: "In Afghanistan, if you wear nail polish, you could have your nails torn out."

London's 15 Psychological Operations Group was the UK equivalent of the CIC.

Anthrax:

"Intelligence sources" provided unsourced allegations that Iraq and Al Qaeda were behind the anthrax letters.

In December 18, the White House confessed that it was "increasingly looking like" the anthrax came from a US military installation.

Drowning coastal cities

Climate Change:

1. Ideally, people should vote for parties that promise to abolish the military. It is primarily the military that keep the greedy elites in power. It is the Pentagon that decides who rules the USA and many other countries. It is the military in Indonesia that is responsible for much of the illegal logging. It is the military in China that defends the fat cats.

2. Ideally, people should vote for parties that will change transport policies. Journeys by car and plane must be made more expensive; journeys by train, bus and bike must be made easier and cheaper.

3. Ideally, people should vote for parties that will increase taxes on the rich. In Jakarta, at least 100,000 families are five-car families. In the USA, too many overweight people drive around in large vehicles which use petrol that is too cheap. In China, more and more people are buying cars rather than bikes. Governments need to persuade people not to be so greedy. When the 'poor' in the Third World become less poor and become better educated, there is the chance that they will produce fewer children. Income should be distributed in such a way that nobody starves and nobody has so much money that they always decide to travel by car rather than by bike or bus.

4. Ideally people should support political parties and religions and other institutions that promote a simpler and more intelligent way of life. Ideally, people would stop supporting the fundamentalists who (1) oppose birth control (2) oppose moderate life styles.

In the UK, people should not vote for New Labour or for the Conservatives. These parties are the parties of the greedy elite.

In the USA, voters should not vote Republican or Democrat.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/climatechange/story/0,12374,1506672,00.html

The Guardian, 15 June 2005, had an article entitled: 'The boat is sinking'.

The UK's chief government scientist David King has explained:

Since the industrial period carbon dioxide levels have risen from 270 parts per million (classical for all previous warm periods) to 379ppm today, and are rising at 2ppm per year. In 10 years' time they will be at 400ppm.

At 500ppm, Greenland's ice will melt entirely - it's already receding by 10 metres a year - and the sea level will rise, drowning coastal cities and entirely changing the contours of the earth.

Most scientists now agree that unless we stabilise the earth's atmosphere by 2050, there will be no way to halt the disaster.

From the Guardian article:

Lord Oxburgh, Chairman of Shell, advocates that government uses the controls at its disposal: "Regulate biofuels. Or subsidise. Or tax" - any incentive really, but "what we don't want to see is in two years' time the government simply becoming bored with climate change after we've invested a lot of our shareholders' money. Remember, those shareholders are pension funds and other similar organisations." The prospect of big business forcing government to regulate it would be funny, if it weren't so serious.

A three hour school day; a school leaving age of 12

In the UK, school hours should be much shorter and the school leaving age should be 12.

The 1819 Factory Act in the UK limited the working day for children in cotton mills.

What we need now is a Schools Act limiting the school day to three hours.

I would suggest that school hours could be 9 am to 12 noon.

Very few children can concentrate on school work for more than 3 hours per day.

When children are not at school they can enjoy being children. Interests will vary:

1. Children can work at home or in libraries on interesting homework projects. It would help if every child was given a computer.

2. They can join clubs involved in everything from sport to music to carpentry to journalism ....

3. They can become apprentices in safe and interesting occupations.

4. They can explore their world.

Mothers of younger children will be able to spend more time with their offspring.

'She's being a total Kelly' wrote Zoe Williams, in the 14 June 2005 Guardian.

UK Education Secretary Ruth Kelly wants children to be at school from 8am to 6pm.

An official at the Department for Education and Skills stated: "If we want parents to go out to work to support the family, the days of schools simply being open from 9am to 3pm are over."

Zoe Williams writes: "8 till 6 is a bloody long day."

Dominic Lawson

http://www.bjr.org.uk/data/2000/no2_leigh.htm

David Leigh wrote about 'Britain’s security services and journalists: the secret story' in the British Journalism ReviewVol. 11, No. 2, 2000, pages 21-26.

According to Leigh: "British journalists – and British journals – are being manipulated by the secret intelligence agencies."

Leigh gave us an example from 1995 when the Sunday Telegraph published a story about the son of Col Gadafy of Libya and his alleged connection to a currency counterfeiting plan.

According to Leigh: "The story was written by Con Coughlin, the paper’s then chief foreign correspondent, and it was falsely attributed to a 'British banking official'. In fact, it had been given to him by officers of MI6, who, it transpired, had been supplying Coughlin with material for years."

According to leigh, former spy Richard Tomlinson heard that "within MI6 there was a 'national newspaper editor' who was used as an agent, and had received up to £100,000 in covert payments, accessed at an offshore bank, via a false passport obligingly supplied by MI6 itself." Dominic Lawson, then editor of the Sunday Telegraph, denied that he was a spy.

http://flatrock.org.nz/topics/money_politics_law/cia_needs_you.htm

Tomlinson's book The Big Breach: From Top Secret to Maximum Security, published by a Russian company, covered Tomlinson's 4 years in MI6 from 1991 to 1995.

Tomlinson claimed that Dominic Lawson worked for MI6 and his codename was 'Smallbrow'.

"The paper sold 666,031 copies in May, a decline of 5.9% on the previous year...

The Sunday Telegraph helped reveal the "nannygate" saga that forced the resignation of then home secretary David Blunkett last year.

Quotes from an article by George Monbiot, 14 June 2005, in the Guardian:

"Corruption has seldom been a barrier to foreign aid and loans: look at the money we have given, directly and through the World Bank and IMF, to Mobutu, Suharto, Marcos, Moi and every other premier-league crook...

"Rwanda's Paul Kagame or Uganda's Yoweri Museveni are repeatedly cited by the G8 countries as practitioners of 'good governance'. Their armies, as the UN has shown, are largely responsible for the meltdown in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has so far claimed 4 million lives, and have walked off with billions of dollars' worth of natural resources. Yet Britain, which is hosting the G8 summit, remains their main bilateral funder. It has so far refused to make their withdrawal from the DRC a conditionality for foreign aid...

"Kagame... has eagerly supplied us with the materials we need for our mobile phones and computers: materials that his troops have stolen from the DRC....

"To qualify for World Bank funding, our model client Uganda was forced to privatise most of its state-owned companies before it had any means of regulating their sale. A sell-off that should have raised $500m for the Ugandan exchequer instead raised $2m. The rest was nicked by government officials. Unchastened, the World Bank insisted that - to qualify for the debt-relief programme the G8 has now extended - the Ugandan government sell off its water supplies, agricultural services and commercial bank, again with minimal regulation...

"In the late 80s, the IMF and World Bank forced it to impose "user fees" for basic healthcare and primary education. The purpose appears to have been to create new markets for private capital. School attendance, especially for girls, collapsed. So did health services, particularly for the rural poor...

"The G8 governments claim they want to help poor countries develop and compete successfully. But they have a powerful commercial incentive to ensure that they compete unsuccessfully, and that our companies can grab their public services and obtain their commodities at rock-bottom prices.

"Attaching conditions ... to aid ... amounts to saying: 'We will give you a trickle of money if you give us the crown jewels.'"

Blair, McKinsey, Enron, CIA continued

http://politics.guardian.co.uk/whitehall/story/0,9061,1505868,00.html

Sandra Laville and Nils Pratley, in the Guardian 14 June 2005, relate "How McKinsey, the secretive global consultancy firm, is gaining influence at the heart of UK plc."

"Yesterday the Guardian revealed that David Bennett, a former partner at McKinsey, who has been hired by Tony Blair to head Downing Street's policy unit, will have a key role in deciding the appointment of the new £220,000-a-year cabinet secretary...

"Mr Bennett is one of a number of McKinsey-trained people already advising the government: Lord Birt, Nick Lovegrove and Adair Turner, who now heads the commission into the future of pensions, to name a few. The firm has landed contracts worth tens of millions of pounds...

"Enron was regarded as the house that McKinsey built."

The answer to the crime problem

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2088-1650731,00.html

Simon Jenkins, in the Sunday Times 12 June 2005, declared that it was time that Tony Blair got tough on the causes of crime.

"He knows perfectly well what they are: alcohol abuse and drug abuse," wrote Jenkins.

What has Blair been doing?

1. he has reduced the cost of drink

2. he has relaxed the licensing laws

3. he has watched the inflow of heroin from Afghanistan increase tenfold

4. he has left it to the criminal world to sell the heroin and other drugs.

Jenkins points out that Britain took “responsibility” for Afghanistan’s opium output after the 2001 war.

Britain is Europe’s leading consumer of all forms of narcotics.

Jenkins names Britain's 'most intensive institutional user' of drugs - the Home Office’s own prisons, run by Charles Clarke.

Jenkins asks: "If Clarke cannot control the habit among prisoners, how can he expect parents or teachers to do better?"

Jenkins writes:

1. "we can regulate and tax the sale of drink."

2. "Heroin should plainly be nationalised... Drugs should be, like alcohol in Sweden, distributed through state outlets."

Iran and the CIA

"By introducing extremism through Khomeini, they knew it would slow down development and it would also slow down Arab nationalism in the region.

Biowarfare

http://rigorousintuition.blogspot.com/2005/06/biowarfare-and-domestic-violence.html

Rigorous-intuition has an article on Biowarfare which is worth reading in full. The following is a shortened version:

Recently Dr Leonid Strachunsky was found dead in Moscow.

According to MosNews, "some sources link Wednesday’s murder of...Strachunsky, who specialized in creating microbes resistant to biological weapons, to [a] hepatitis outbreak" which, according to the latest report, has afflicted more than 500 people in Russia's Tver region."

Last winter 120 children in North Ossetia were likely accidentally poisoned by contaminated milk, and the drops of mercury that Russians have found in fruit juice and candy are presumably isolated incidents of industrial sabotage. But there should be a degree of uncertainty....

In the Autumn of 1999, field tests began for a vaccine, developed by OraVax Corporation, under license to the Army biowarfare lab at Fort Detrick (from which the anthrax of the attacks of 2001 was sourced). http://www.rense.com/general3/profit.htm

The vaccine was to deal with a genetically-altered Japanese encephalitis virus the Army had created. Coincidentally encephalitis, in the form of West Nile Virus, also broke out in New York City.

Leonard Horowitz, in Death in the Air: Globalism, Terrorism and Toxic Warfare, cites the conclusions of researcher Patricia Doyle that "the sudden emergence of WNV, never before a public concern, was likely a deliberate release to 'test that city's biowarfare response, and make at least one corporation a sizable profit.'" (One year before becoming the exclusive manufacturer of WNV vaccine, OraVax had been delisted by NASDAQ, and was facing insolvency.)

In 1977 the Senate heard that, between 1949 and 1969, 239 "populated areas had been contaminated with biological agents."

In 1931 Dr. Cornelius Rhoads, under the aegis of the Rockefeller Institute was intentionally infecting Puerto Rican subjects with cancer cells.

Scotland a dump for nuclear waste?

http://www.sundayherald.com/50248

Rob Edwards, in the Sunday Herald 12 June 2005, wrote about the dumping of nuclear waste.

The UK radioactive waste agency is called Nirex.

Nirex has now been forced to publish details of all potential nuclear waste sites.

At present there are more than 92,000 cubic metres of nuclear waste stored at 34 locations around the UK.

According to the Sunday Herald, 'this is set to rise five times in volume over the next 100 years, even assuming no new nuclear power stations are built.'

Nirex has now published a list of 537 potential sites, of which 159 are in Scotland.

According to the Sunday Herald, "Much of the list reads like a roll call of Scotland’s famous islands. It included Iona, Islay, Jura, Canna, Eigg, Muck, Coll, Gigha, Colonsay, Tiree, Ulva, Raasay, Rhum, St Kilda, Foula, Ailsa Craig, the Summer Isles and the Isle of May in the Firth of Forth.

Chris Ballance, Green MP said: “The list shows that site selection in the past has been done on purely political grounds – where they think they can get away with it.”

Ballance points out that nearly a third of the 537 sites in the UK are in Scotland. “ Low population and low public opposition was a more important factor than geological and scientific suitability.”

'West Bank and Gaza not part of Israel' declares Israel's High court.

http://www.icej.org/cgi-local/view.cgi?type=headline&artid=2005/06/09/830988300

June 09, 2005

Israel's High Court of Justice voted in June 2005 that Gaza and the West Bank are not part of Israel.

"Judea and Samaria [the West Bank] and the Gaza area are lands seized during warfare, and are not part of Israel," said the judges.

Let us hope that Israel withdraws from these territories immediately.

Adults with learning disabilities need happy homes, not 'care in the community'.

Ideally, mentally backward adults are looked after in happy homes and they have lots of friends among other mentally backward people.

The Labour government's policy of 'care in the community' often means that vulnerable adults are removed from homes and shoved into lonely flats where they fail to make any friends.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1650798,00.html

Minette Marin wrote about the failure of the UK policy of 'inclusion' in the Sunday Times, 12 June 2005.

Marrin argues that the government policy of 'care in the community' leads too often to loneliness and exclusion.

Marrin writes about vulnerable adults living alone in bedsits, 'bored, neglected and stuck indoors watching television.'

Marrin continues: 'What’s also very sad is that although the theory is that people with learning disabilities should have the chance of making normal friends in the normal community, subsequent research suggests this doesn’t actually happen — as one might have predicted.'

A study in 2002 found that people with learning disabilities are happier when they have a larger number of people with learning disabilities that they can mix with.

'Special needs' children need 'special needs' schools.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1650799,00.html

The Sunday Times, 12 June 2005, had an article on 'special' schools in the UK.

Three-quarters of all children with “severe or complex” special needs are educated in mainstream comprehensive schools.

This often leads to 'handicapped' or 'special needs' children being bullied and not being given adequate care. It can lead to children with emotional problems causing havoc in the classroom.

One in five children in England and Wales have learning difficulties.

Blair's Labour government has closed 90 special schools since 1997. This saves the government money.

Baroness Warnock's 1978 report on special needs education favoured a policy of 'inclusion'. Now Warnock has changed her mind. She says 'inclusion' is not working.

David Cameron is the Conservative education spokesman. He has a three-year-old son with cerebral palsy and epilepsy. He wants parents to have a “proper choice between mainstream and special schools”.

Most special needs children are now educated in mainstream schools. But, Ofsted noted in its latest report that only “a minority of mainstream schools meet special needs very well”.

Leaked memo and the illegality of the Iraq war.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1650822,00.html

According to the Sunday Times, June 12, 2005, UK ministers were told in July 2002 that 'Britain was committed to taking part in an American-led invasion of Iraq' and 'they had to find a way of making it legal.'

A leaked Cabinet Office briefing paper shows Blair had agreed in April 2002, at the Bush ranch in Texas, to back military action.

The briefing paper, for a meeting of Blair’s inner circle on July 23, 2002, said that since regime change was illegal it was “necessary to create the conditions” which would make it legal.

We want to grab Africa's oil

http://www.sundayherald.com/50283
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/what_we_do/issues/trade/bp30_cotton.htm

Torcuil Crichton wrote in the Sunday Herald, 12 June 2005, that When it comes to Africa, Bush has more on his mind than aid.

What the US government wants from Africa:

1. oil from countries such as Nigeria and Gabon
2. raw materials such as managanese and cobalt
3. a market for American goods

Aid agencies such as Oxfam have pointed out that subsidies to US cotton farmers are helping to ruin Africa's cotton farmers.A T-shirt is sold in the UK for under £2.The T-shirt is not made with African cotton.The T-shirt is made with American cotton because subsidies make it artificially cheap.American cotton farmers receive $3.9bn (£2bn) a year in Government subsidies - three times the annual amount the US gives in aid to Africa.

As a proportion of national wealth only 0.16% of the US budget goes on aid. Less than 1% of the US aid budget goes to sub Saharan Africa.

A lot of the US aid funds go to Israel.

The United States normally only brings guns to Africa.

Torcuil Chriton points out that: 'the US bears a historical responsibility for numerous regional and tribal conflicts that have destabilised countries such as Angola, Liberia, Congo and Somalia.'

Reportedly the CIA murdered the Congo's Lumumba on the instructions of Eisenhower. http://www.leftwatch.com/archives/years/2000/000091.html

From Africa, America wants:

oil
manganese, for steel,
cobalt, for chrome and alloys,
gold,
fluorspar and germanium for industrial diamonds

The African Growth and Opportunity Act, a trade agreement between the US and Africa, 'forces participants to remove subsides from their industries (while allowing the US to subsidise its own) and insists on privatisation of social services such as water even in countries that face drought.'

According to Crichton, "the over-riding American concern in Africa, as it is across the entire globe, is oil security. Oil, its extraction and supply, will always be the top priority for the US. The biggest returns, and the most important product out of Africa for the coming decades, will be petroleum. The returns are not for Africans though."

70% of Nigerians exist on a dollar a day. Western oil companies in Nigeria have made billions of dollars from oil.

At present 12% of US oil comes from Africa
By 2015, 25% of US oil will come from Africa.

The US wants military bases near the oil.

Atta was working for the US military?

http://rigorousintuition.blogspot.com/

From rigorousintuition:

....for an agency which, before 9/11, appeared clueless that members of al Qaeda were training at flight schools, the FBI inexplicably and immediately knew, upon the attacks, which flight schools al Qaeda members had attended. And this was long before suspects should have been identified.

Venice Florida's Huffman Aviation was the principal flight school used by Mohammed Atta and associates, though used for what is a good question, as Atta was already a pilot. (The best answer may be a familiar one to students of deep politics: trafficking narcotics.) A former Huffman manager told investigative journalist Daniel Hopsicker that a carload of FBI agents pulled up outside his house in the middle of the day, on the day of the attack.

"They were outside my house four hours after the attack," he says in Welcome to Terrorland. Hopsicker writes that "they didn't strong-arm him to make him think harder and cough up some useful leads, but to ensure he kept his mouth shut."

The shaken source had quit Huffman because he'd found the workplace to be something else than he'd expected. Something, well, spooky: "I had to leave and get out. I wish I didn't know as much as I know. I told them they had nothing to fear from me."

What did he know?

"These guys [Atta et al] were double agents.... I gleaned early on that the operation I was working for had government protection. They were let into this country. How did the FBI get here so soon? Ask yourself: How'd they get here so soon?"

And note: when he says "here," he doesn't mean Huffman Aviation; he means his own house. So, only four hours after the attack, the FBI didn't merely know enough to visit Atta's flight school; it knew enough to visit the home of a former employee of Atta's flight school who had quit because he suspected Atta and his cadres were double agents. It wasn't investigating the attacks, it was intimidating witnesses.

Why the lack of confidence in the US media?

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000954852

June 10, 2005

Gallup has an annual survey of "public confidence in major institutions" in the United States.

Those having a "great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in newspapers dropped from 30% to 28% in one year, the same total for television.

Confidence in the presidency plunged from 52% to 44%, with Congress and the criminal-justice system also suffering 8% drops. Confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court fell from 46% to 41%. The 22% confidence rating for Congress is its lowest in eight years.

Why the lack of confidence in the US press?

Two months before September 11 Osama bin Laden flew to Dubai for 10 days for treatment at the American hospital, where he was visited by the local CIA agent, according to the French newspaper Le Figaro...

Bin Laden is reported to have arrived in Dubai on July 4.

The CIA chief was seen in the lift, on his way to see Bin Laden, and later, it is alleged, boasted to friends about his contact. He was recalled to Washington soon afterwards.

Intelligence sources say that another CIA agent was also present; and that Bin Laden was also visited by Prince Turki al Faisal, then head of Saudi intelligence, who had long had links with the Taliban, and Bin Laden. Soon afterwards Turki resigned.

According to Le Figaro: "Un homme, partenaire professionnel de la direction administrative de l'hÎpital américain de Dubaï, affirme que l'ennemi public numéro un a séjourné dans cet établissement hospitalier du 4 au 14 juillet." A partner in the hospital confirmed that bin Laden stayed at the hospital.

Tatort and 9 11

http://www.washtimes.com/world/20050608-095942-4588r.htm

German state TV has shown a drama based on the idea that elements of the American government ordered the 9 11 attacks.

The Green Party chairman, Reihard Buetikofer, appears to believe that the drama should not have been shown. "I hope this particular TV movie will be discussed very critically at the next supervisory board meeting of ARD state television," he said.

The drama, an episode in the Tatort series, was about a German woman and a man who was killed in her apartment.

The dead man had been trained to be a 9 11 pilot but was left behind. He was then killed by the CIA or FBI.

The woman claims that the 9 11 attacks were the work of the Bush family for oil and power.

The drama ends with the German detectives accepting her story and her escaping to safety in an unnamed Arab country.

A poll published in the weekly Die Zeit showed that 31 percent of Germans younger than 30 "think that there is a certain possibility that the U.S. government ordered the attacks of 9/11."

Is it true that blogs which support Israel have been attacking the showing of this drama?

Acquittal of 9 11 suspect upheld

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4076346.stm

Germany's federal appeals court has upheld the acquittal of Abdelghani Mzoudi, a Moroccan who was accused of links to the 11 September attacks.

He was acquitted in February 2004 of charges that he helped the 11 September 2001 hijackers who attacked the US.

The appeals court ruled on Thursday that there was insufficient evidence to justify a retrial.

Kenyan bombs the work of the security services?

http://www.swissinfo.org/sen/swissinfo.html?siteSect=143&sid=5858357&cKey=1118332275000

In 1998 the US embassy in Nairobi was bombed.

In 2002, bombs went off outside the Paradise Hotel in Kenya. At almost the same time, a missile was allegedly fired at an Israeli airliner leaving the airport in the nearby Kenyan resort town of Mombasa.

A Kenyan judge on 9 June 2005 acquitted four men charged in the 2002 bombing of the Israeli-owned hotel that killed 15 people, saying prosecutors had failed to link them to the bombers.

Kenyan Embassy bombs:

"We don't know yet who was at the wheel of those car bombs; but we do know that the long fuse leading to these terrorist flare-ups was lit in Israel," asserted Capt. Aurelio dell Acqua, a retired Italian Carabinieri officer.

Kenya Hotel bomb

Amidst news of the attacks in Mombassa attacks, Sharon was able to win a landslide victory in the Israel elections...

"One cannot dismiss the possibility of Mossad being involved in the Kenyan attacks...

"It is puzzling that two heat-seeking missiles should have missed the plane at an altitude of 500 feet. What is more the Israeli jet seems to have been unusually well equipped to deal with a missile attack."

The autism rate for U.S. children is 1 in 166, according to the federal government.

The autism rate for the Amish around Middlefield, Ohio, is 1 in 15,000, according to Dr. Heng Wang.

Most Amish do not vaccinate their children.

Malaria

http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,1502272,00.html

An all-party group of UK MPs says that $2bn-3bn a year is needed to make an impact in beating malaria - about the cost of two or three days of farm subsidies in the EU and US.

At present international funding for malaria control is only around $150 million per year.

Malaria kills up to 3 million people a year.

The Commission for Africa said that half the deaths of African children from malaria could be avoided if parents had access to nets and drugs that cost not much more than $1 (about 55p) a dose.

The World Bank estimates that malaria costs Africa $12bn a year in lost productivity.

UK MP claims election was rigged

http://politics.guardian.co.uk/otherparties/story/0,9061,1502411,00.html

George Galloway claimed on 8 June 2005 that the general election in Bethnal Green and Bow may have involved "thousands" of fraudulent votes.

Galloway was giving evidence to a London Assembly electoral review committee.

Galloway said: "My suspicion is that there were many hundreds and perhaps in the low thousands of people on the register in Bethnal Green and Bow who should not be for one reason or other...

"It became clear to us during the course of the campaign that somebody was involved in a major operation to bloat the electoral register with non-existent electors as part of a dirty tricks operation. All of our original fears were not only vindicated but found to be merely the tip of the iceberg...

"Tower Hamlets council is in the grip of a corrupt political culture run by New Labour, ruthlessly using bullying, blackmail, postal votes operations - all the black arts you could imagine...

"The borough of Tower Hamlets runs its elections in a way that would disgrace a banana republic...

"We have example after example of people being warned that if they display posters for anyone but New Labour their grants would be withdrawn or jobs lost. It has been put around Brick Lane that anyone coming to me with an immigration case will be deported."

According to Galloway:

At one address in Brick Lane 14 people who did not live there had been registered to vote.

200 polling cards were sent to residents at a former nursing home in Mile End which is now used as offices.

Heads of households cast numerous votes on behalf of relatives.

A Metropolitan police spokesman said: "We have received a formal allegation of electoral fraud in the constituency.

"Detectives are consulting with the Crown Prosecution Service to ascertain if any possible offence has been disclosed that would require further investigation."

The UN says the trends in child mortality raise particularly grave concerns.

"Currently 4.8 million children in sub-Saharan Africa die before the age of five every year - that is nine deaths every minute. With one fifth of the world's births, sub-Saharan Africa currently accounts for 45% of child deaths."

Sodomy

http://www.washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040717-082858-3675r.htm

American journalist Seymour Hersh has said there are videotapes of American soldiers sodomizing young Iraqi boys at Abu Ghraib prison

Hersh, one of the first to break the story of prisoner abuses, said the Bush administration is holding the tapes of these acts, Aljazeera.net reported.

"The boys were sodomized with the cameras rolling, and the worst part is the soundtrack, of the boys shrieking. And this is your government at war," he said.

There was "a massive amount of criminal wrongdoing that was covered up at the highest command out there, and higher," he said.

Philippines - rigged election?

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/story.jsp?story=644834

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?storyID=8703686&type=worldNews

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=adJa0fR7meWk&refer=top_world_news

Philippine opposition politicians claim there is a tape of President Gloria Arroyo discussing plans to cheat in the 2005 elections. Arroyo is an ally of President Bush.

In the tape Arroyo seems to be talking with an official of the Commission on Elections.

There have also been allegations that Arroyo's son and husband received payoffs from illegal gambling operators.

On May 19, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that three unidentified people had linked Arroyo's husband and son to jueteng, an illegal form of gambling.

On May 30, a 'former jueteng operator' told a Senate investigation that he had paid protection money to a man who claimed to be linked to Arroyo's son.

The media spin on Europe's 'no' vote

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2005/jun2005/fran-j07.shtml

Patrick Martin, 7 June 2005, in WSWS, wrote about the French referendum.

According to Martin, most Europeans saw the 'no' vote being due to anger that governments had:

1. cut social spending

2. cut wages

3. cut taxes for the rich

4. deregulated businesses.

The spin from some of the media in the USA is that Chirac must be removed and that US-style free market capitalism must take over. Wages must be reduced and hours of work increased.

Thomas Friedman of the New York Times: “French voters are trying to preserve a 35-hour work week in a world where Indian engineers are ready to work a 35-hour day. Good luck.”

Martin, in WSWS, writes: "it is ... possible to ... raise the standard of living of all human beings on the planet to a decent, civilized level."

According to Martin, we do not need to have "hundreds of millions of new workers ... mainly in Asia, used as a battering ram to undermine the social position of the working class in Europe, North America and Japan."

Dunblane

http://dailytelegraph.news.com.au/story.jsp?sectionid=1268&storyid=3238389

Former paramedic Sandra Uttley is going to the European Court of Human Rights to demand a new inquiry into the 1996 Dunblane tragedy in which 16 children and their teacher were shot dead by Thomas Hamilton.

Sandra Uttley claims that elements of the police were part of a paedophile ring and part of a cover-up.

Uttley said: "There are glaring anomalies in the inquiry, inconsistencies in witness testimony, incorrect information given on oath and the absence of vital witnesses.

"It is also blatantly obvious that Central Scotland Police, who were chosen to investigate the background to the murders, should never have been involved in a so-called independent inquiry.

"They were implicated in the events under scrutiny and continually provided Hamilton with renewals of his gun licence despite long-term and repeated warnings that this should not happen.

"It was known that Hamilton had friends in the police force, including one highly placed officer.

"I believe that Hamilton was a major provider of pornographic photographs and videos to a ring of men prominent in Central Scotland, including police officers who protected him from numerous allegations of physical abuse at boys' camps and clubs he ran.

"They protected themselves after the massacre which conveniently ended in his suicide".

A Pakistani view of 9 11

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_5-6-2005_pg7_21

In Pakistan, Qazi Hussain Ahmad has said that 9/11 was a planned conspiracy to crush Muslims.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad is president of the the Islamist Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA)
the six-party religious alliance that constitutes one-fifth of the country's parliament.

After the fall of Communism, the US made Muslims its prime target, explained Qazi.

Qazi said the Pakistani government was working as an “agent” of the US and NATO, who have established military bases in Afghanistan near Pakistani borders.

He said that General Pervez Musharraf is working as an American ally against Islamic movements and is also a friend of India. He condemned Musharraf for saying that Israeli premier Ariel Sharon was a brave general and soldier.The MMA accused Gen Musharraf of provoking people against religious forces and asking them not to vote for religious parties because they are extremists, which was a violation of the constitution. He said that Musharraf was an opponent of Muslim unity and was dividing the Muslims.

Local democracy

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2092-1641097,00.html

In the Sunday Times, 5 June 2005, Simon Jenkins wrote about Europe after the 'no' votes or Europe after 'The Peasant's Revolt'.

Jenkins sees an argument in favour of greater local democracy on the lines of the cantons of Switzerland or the mairies of France.

Jenkins writes: "As both Napoleon and Hitler discovered, when European imperialists march to the east they eventually lose in the west. The elastic is overstretched."

Jenkins relates that Denmark, France, Italy, Spain and Sweden have to some extent decentralised their governments. Local communities and provinces have some real power.
Cities such as Milan, Toulouse, Barcelona and Munich appear to have benefited. Swedes and Sicilians can run their own schools and healthcare.

According to Jenkins: "Last week the Dutch voted to stay Dutch."

Jenkins reports on a study of democracy in Norway: "Local democracy, once strong in Scandinavia, was waning.... Unless the Norwegian constitution was reformed, said the study, Norway would become a form of oligarchy. A stage army of self-selected party politicians in Oslo would share power with an elite of unelected technocrats, lawyers, bankers and journalists. They would adjust policy by regular focus groups and opinion polls. The urban poor would be a helot class, too small to matter politically. The only threat to this oligarchy would come from outbursts of protest, controlled by ever tighter security."

Cheating the poor - Cotton T-shirts

http://www.oxfam.org.uk/what_we_do/issues/trade/bp30_cotton.htm
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/politics/story.jsp?story=643975

On 4 June 2005, the UK's Independent, wrote about world trade.

Aid agencies such as Oxfam have pointed out that subsidies to US cotton farmers are helping to ruin Africa's cotton farmers.

A T-shirt is sold in the UK for under £2.

The T-shirt is not made with African cotton.

The T-shirt is made with American cotton because subsidies make it artificially cheap.

American cotton farmers receive $3.9bn (£2bn) a year in Government subsidies - three times the annual amount the US gives in aid to Africa.

In Benin more than 60,000 farmers have stopped growing cotton in the past five years because they cannot compete with American cotton

The World Trade Organisation ruled in 2004 that America's cotton subsidy system was illegal.

Amy Barry, of Oxfam, said:

"The whole system of American subsidies is not only morally unjust but illegal, and the WTO has backed that. Cotton is a graphic example of how these subsidies destroy the poorest farmers in the poorest countries, and we are calling for a scrapping of the system and compensation to African farmers for the losses they have incurred."

"This is about political reform but consumers need to take responsibility.

"The reason why you can buy a T-shirt for £3 in the shops, days after something similar has been featured in Vogue is because of these artificially low cotton prices and labour costs which have a direct and destructive impact on farmers in Benin and other African countries.

"You may be able to get cheaper clothes, but at what price?"

It costs the American farmer 78 cents per pound to grow cotton.
The American farmer sells his cotton for 48 cents per pound.
Most of the American cotton goes to China.

Central Asia

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2005/may2005/oil-m31.shtml

Peter Symonds, in WSWS, 31 May 2005, wrote about US strategy in Central Asia.

The US-backed Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline has now been opened. It runs through Azerbaijan and Georgia to Turkey.

The US wanted:

1. to undercut the existing pipeline system in Russia
2. avoid Iran

In 2003, the USA dumped Georgian President Shevardnadze and installed openly pro-US Mikhael Saakashvili.

Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbeyev has signed a declaration committing his country to transport some of its oil through the pipeline. This will not please Russia.

BP has invested at least $15 billion in Azerbaijan.

Asia Times: “According to Baku’s street wisdom, the man who really rules Azerbaijan is David Woodward, BP’s chairman, known as ‘the viceroy’, a walking oil atlas with more than three decades working for the company from Scotland to Abu Dhabi and from Alaska to Siberia. Woodward and BP mercilessly spin that BTC is the cleanest and safest pipeline ever built. Georgian peasants and English non-governmental organisations beg to differ.”

The USA has supported the 'corrupt Azerbaijan dictatorship'. Heydar Aliyev, a former Stalinist party boss, ruled Azerbaijan until 2003, when his son Ilham, 'notorious playboy, casino owner and vice-president of the state oil company' took over.

Transparency International’s global corruption index: Azerbaijan ranks 140 out of 146 countries.

A report by Human Rights Watch recently referred to allegations of torture in Georgia.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the standard of living in both Georgia and Azerbaijan 'plummetted'.

The US has military bases in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Azerbaijan may be next.

Britain to get colder and wetter?

http://education.independent.co.uk/news/story.jsp?story=643956

James Martin, the man who predicted the internet and cellular phones, is now predicting that Britain is going to get more cold and more wet.

He is warning us about ice from Greenland interfering with the Gulf Stream.

"If happens in 10 years' time, we're in trouble. In 50 years, there is a lot we could do to stop it - but if it happens suddenly you would get a catastrophic temperature drop."

Bilderburg 2005

Http://www.counterpunch.org/estulin05272005.html

Daniel Estulin, in Counterpunch 27 May 2005, wrote about Infiltrating Bilderburg.

Israel-Palestine

According to Estulin: "Dennis Ross, Richard N. Perle, and company are itching to... ethnically cleanse as many Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza as possible."

Oil

Estulin writes: "Expect a severe downturn in the world's economy over the next two years as Bilderbergers try to safeguard the remaining oil supply by taking money out of people's hands. In a recession or, at worst, a depression, the population will be forced to dramatically cut down their spending habits, thus ensuring a longer supply of oil to the world's rich as they try to figure out what to do."

Indonesia-Malaysia stand-off

Estulin comments that a political and military confrontation between these two nations in the petroleum-rich Sulawesi Sea might allow "Peacekeepers" to be garrisoned in the area. That could lead to the West controlling the oil.

Trade

Estulin believes "the Bilderbergers have secretly agreed on the need to force the poor countries into a globalized market for cheap goods while simultaneously forcing the poor into becoming customers....

"One can't help but wonder, when the Bilderberg organisers, Rockefeller, Kissinger, Queen Beatrix and the rest have completed their project of enclosing all global goods and services into their own hands, what then?"

Daniel Estulin is a political commentator living in Madrid.

The rich elite want Europe to be a military junior partner for the USA?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,3604,1497143,00.html

Serge Halimi, of le Monde diplomatique, wrote in the Guardian 2 June 2005, about Europe and the free market liberals.

In France, the people who wanted a ‘yes’ vote were:

The rich elite

This included:

most of the media

most of the politicians

In France, 60% of the young voted ‘no’.

Halimi argues that Chirac was wrong to introduce free-market reforms that have hit:

pensions

education

and industry.

‘Unemployment has kept on rising and poverty has spread.’

Halimi suggests that a ‘yes’ vote would have meant:

1. an ever-expanding free-market zone,

2. the dismantling of the welfare state,

3. lower corporate taxes and

4. business-friendly legislation

Halimi claims the EU has become 'distorted' into:

1. a single market

2. a military junior partner for the US.

Halimi wrote: "it is unlikely that an informed electorate will change its mind now that it has understood the links between the social devastation at home and the neoliberal policies that spread under the cover of European unification.

Daily Mirror photos and Piers Morgan

In 2004 the Daily Mirror published photos that appeared to show British soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners.

The editor of the Daily Mirror, Piers Morgan, was sacked after the British military claimed that it had evidence that the photos were fake.

~~~
http://www.medialens.org/
Medialens points out:
"Although definitive proof of the fraudulence of the photographs was promised, it has never been provided - the issue was simply forgotten and the media moved on.
"Earlier this month all allegations were dropped against the only soldier charged with faking the photos.
"'Apparently, there was no hard evidence of a hoax after all,'" Piers Morgan comments in the New Statesman. (Morgan, Diary, New Statesman, May 30, 2005)
Morgan told the BBC last month: "I think it is time the Government and the Ministry of Defence and the Queen's Lancashire Regiment put up some real evidence that these pictures were indeed a hoax. We have already seen from court-martials that much worse than we put forward was going on."
~~~

Who were the journalists who suggested the photos were fake?

Melanie Phillips
"I think it's an act of treachery"

Peter Preston
"The staged photographs increased the pressure on our boys in Basra"

Andrew Neil
"They were fakes from the start, they were clearly fakes"

Jon Snow
"It was pretty obvious they were a hoax from beginning to end"

~~~
Are any of the above named journalists working for the security services?
http://www.five.org.uk/security/mi5org/
A quote from an article about MI5:
"It is also widely known that journalist Jon Snow (presently of Channel 4) was offered a tax-free salary to become their agent. He declined, and has indicated concern that others in the media might have received similar offers, and accepted."
Deep throat
http://xymphora.blogspot.com/2005/06/deep-throat-revealed.html
According to Xymphora:
"Deep Throat ... was a fictional method of funneling the information that Woodward was getting from whomever he was really working for - likely CIA or Joint Chiefs of Staff - into the stories intended to unseat Nixon, or at least weaken him....
"The American Powers That Be were apparently terrified that Nixon, who up to the end of the 1960's was a reliable, crooked, mob-connected political hack, was intelligent enough to realize that his place in the history books would be determined by the substantial good he did. China whet his appetite, and there was a very real danger that the old fool would succeed in approaching the Soviets and ending the Cold War fifteen years early (and billions and billions of dollars in weapons sales early), all in a bid to take his place in history. He had to be stopped..."
