Patrick Martin, 7 June 2005, in WSWS, wrote about the French referendum.
According to Martin, most Europeans saw the 'no' vote being due to anger that governments had:
1. cut social spending
2. cut wages
3. cut taxes for the rich
4. deregulated businesses.
The spin from some of the media in the USA is that Chirac must be removed and that US-style free market capitalism must take over. Wages must be reduced and hours of work increased.
Thomas Friedman of the New York Times: “French voters are trying to preserve a 35-hour work week in a world where Indian engineers are ready to work a 35-hour day. Good luck.”
Martin, in WSWS, writes: "it is ... possible to ... raise the standard of living of all human beings on the planet to a decent, civilized level."
According to Martin, we do not need to have "hundreds of millions of new workers ... mainly in Asia, used as a battering ram to undermine the social position of the working class in Europe, North America and Japan."
