The UN says the trends in child mortality raise particularly grave concerns.
"Currently 4.8 million children in sub-Saharan Africa die before the age of five every year - that is nine deaths every minute. With one fifth of the world's births, sub-Saharan Africa currently accounts for 45% of child deaths."
