In the years before he died, Andrew Carnegie gave away $350,695,653.

When he died, Carnegie's last $30,000,000 was given away to foundations, charities, and pensioners.

Carnegie said: "Man does not live by bread alone. I have known millionaires starving for lack of the nutriment which alone can sustain all that is human in man, and I know workmen, and many so-called poor men, who revel in luxuries beyond the power of those millionaires to reach."

BILL GATES has given £14.6 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which tackles diseases such as Malaria in the Third World and promotes education.

Carnegie was born in 1835 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.

In1848 the Carnegie family left Glasgow for New York.

In 1856 he made his first share deal with Adams Express (forerunner to American Express).

At age of 51, Andrew Carnegie married Louise Whitfield (aged 28).

In 1892 the Carnegie Steel Company was formed with Carnegie's share worth $14million.

In 1901 Carnegie sold his share in Carnegie Steel Co. and became the world's richest man.
